The use of a chilled plate at a fixed temperature will bias the thermal profile in tissue within a couple of hundred milliseconds. The addition of laser energy will result in a thermal profile with a peak temperature at a depth which is determined by the chilled plate temperature and the fluence and wavelength of the laser energy, for energy pulses in the range of 200 ms or less. The plate clamps the skin surface at a fixed temperature as eliminating skin surface temperature as a variable. Also shot to shot fluctuations in cyrogen volume, duration and distance are eliminated.
