BIOINFORMATICS – OUTLOOK
Technologies in proteomics are employed in drug discovery studies in addition to genomic approaches.
These integrated technologies have paved way for the extension of Bioinformatics and protein bio-chip
technologies in a unique method. Bio-informatics provides much opportunities and its self-assurance
opens new avenues in the associated sectors also. Drug discovery sector has gained much significance in
the Bioinformatics market. Bioinformatics tools and software area has reduced the costs and period of
manufacture of newly ascertained drugs thus making the field a prospective target for future endeavors.

Bioinformatics
Bioinformatics is a latest branch of applied sciences which utilizes the applications of mathematics,
statistics and computational techniques, to learn, manage and process high amounts of biological data

Biomedical informatics is a science that uses bioinformatics, particularly information about healthcare and
medicines. This discipline extends the usage of information technology and sophisticated computing
technologies being used in research to medical practices, medicines and biomedical sciences.
Biomedical informatics covers areas such as dental informatics, pharmacy informatics, public health
informatics, genomics, proteomics, drug designing, clinical informatics, nursing informatics, veterinary
informatics, and medical imaging informatics.
Bio-inspired Computing
Bio-inspired computing or biologically inspired computing is an area of research that integrates information
from sources such as social behavior, evolution, and connectionism. Substantial part of this field is
associated with artificial intelligence because many projects are aimed at teaching machines to perform
human functions after learning the mechanism from evolutionary processes. This field is highly dependent
on mathematics, computer science and biology. In simple words, bio-inspired computing entails
development of computers that imitate some natural action, and analysis of nature for improving the
efficacy of computers. Effectively, this branch of bioinformatics is the main user of computations related to
nature.
Biocybernetics
This is the branch where cybernetics is used along with biological sciences. This science is used in biological
fields which are likely to benefit from usage of systems such as cybernetics neurology, cybernetics
multicellular systems, and many others. This is not a definite science, because this is primarily a bunch of
theories that are developed using principles of systemics. The postulations of such theories without any
concrete proofs make biocybernetics an abstract science.

Bybernetics
Bybernetics is another bioinformatics branch that is important in systems biology. This branch combines
information about biological systems and analyzes what triggers these systems, and affects their performance.
Computational Biomodeling
Computational biomodeling is that branch of bioinformatics, which analyzes processes that might result in
creation of life, artificially. Therefore, computer based simulation processes on biochemical systems are
carried on to check if the process results in life form. Effectively, this field entails integration of computer
science, chemistry, physics, and molecular biology. The main focus of such computational studies as of now
is to understand how cells are formed, made to perform in unison with other cells in a tissue, and how they
manage to withstand hostile environments.
This is, comparatively, a new area of bioinformatics. One hurdle that is encountered in such computational
biomodeling is the comprehension of protein folding mechanism. Research on protein folding pattern is
being carried out through Folding@home project, and Blue Gene project.

Databases Description
BioProject (formerly
Genome Project)
A collection of genomics, functional genomics, and genetics studies and links to
their resulting datasets. This resource describes project scope, material, and
objectives and provides a mechanism to retrieve datasets that are often difficult to
find due to inconsistent annotation, multiple independent submissions, and the
varied nature of diverse data types which are often stored in different databases.
BioSample The BioSample database contains descriptions of biological source materials used
in experimental assays.
BioSystems Database that groups biomedical literature, small molecules, and sequence data in
terms of biological relationships.
Bookshelf A collection of biomedical books that can be searched directly or from linked data
in other NCBI databases. The collection includes biomedical textbooks, other
scientific titles, genetic resources such as GeneReviews, and NCBI help manuals.
ClinVar A resource under development to provide a public, tracked record of reported
relationships among human variation and observed health status. ClinVar has a
projected launch date for late 2011.
CloneDB (formerly Clone
Registry)
A database that integrates information about clones and libraries, including
sequence data, map positions and distributor information.
Computational Resources
from NCBI's Structure
Group
A centralized page providing access and links to resources developed by the
Structure Group of the NCBI Computational Biology Branch (CBB). These resources
cover databases and tools to help in the study of macromolecular structures,
conserved domains and protein classification, small molecules and their biological
activity, and biological pathways and systems.
