DI Lesson – Suggestions – Have a regular routine EVERYDAY – Will save a lot of time!
The Scripted Lessons – Do’s and Don’ts
DOs DON’Ts
Word List Do the word list EVERYDAY Don’t make each child do the word list individually
(time consuming)
Make sure they get a 100% on the list Don’t go forward (right away) if your students are missing
several words on the list. (See Dos)
If they MISS a word – Make them say the word (3) times
BY SAYING – What’s this word –THEN they say it.
(Repeat this question 3 times) Then GO Back to the top
of that column AND start over.
If you think a child is not getting the words –
Call on THAT child and make he/she say the list.
If your students are having problems w/certain words –
Make flashcards w/those words for practice.
Compound Words –Say what kind of word?
What’s first word? What’s second word?
Put them together – What’s the word?
Do it EVERYTIME you have a compound word.
Contractions – Say – What kind of word?
What’s the first word? What’s the second word?
What letters are cut out?
Put them together – What’s the word?
Do it EVERYTIME you have a compound word.
Write some contractions on the board so that they can
see that letters are cut out to make the word.

11. DOs DON’Ts
Word List 1st – 3rd Grades 1st – 3rd Grades
(Spelling) DO spelling of words during Spelling OR Guided Reading Don’t have them spell the words (time consuming)
Times (time sake).
You can (if you wish) add the challenging words to your
spelling list
Reading STICK to the error rule. If they miss more than the DON’T go forward in the story if the group misses more
(The Story) maximum – Go back to the beginning of the story and than the lesson allows.
RE‐Read.
Note the words that the students are constantly having
issues with and make them into flashcards.
Use post‐its and place them on those lesson pages.
If the reader MISSES a word – Make he/she say the word
(3) times BY SAYING – What’s that word –THEN they say
it.
(Repeat that question 3 times) Then the reader GOES
BACK to the beginning of the sentence and starts over.
Count it as an error if the reader doesn’t know where the Don’t reprimand the student that doesn’t know where the
group is and this makes the readers focus on the text. group is…..Just say, “That’s an error.” Show them where the
group is and have he/she read and MOVE ON (for time
sake).
Just A Suggestion – For time efficiency—
Round Robin Reading – This way the kids know its there
turn and you get the story read in time.
PRAISE them when they read the story w/o going
over the error maximum.
Provide Seatwork OR Computer Websites that will
SEATWORK support the DI Lesson.
