2007-2008 Annual Report
t is with great pleasure that I write to you in the first Presbyterian School Annual Report. This
Annual Report is a comprehensive means of informing you about the wonderful gifts given to support our
school community. The time, talents and treasures given by you to Presbyterian School have touched the
lives of many children. It is evident in this report that Presbyterian School is a community of givers!
Happily, financial donations to Presbyterian School continue to increase yearly. In the 2003-2004 school year, close to 500
donors gave more than $700,000 through the Annual Fund and other special events. Of special note was the generosity of our
Leadership Council, Presbyterian School’s Annual Fund major donors, who provided 56% of the $412,000 Annual Fund total.
In February, the entire school community celebrated together at The Secret Garden Gala while raising a record $280,000
and in May, The Presbyterian Panther Golf Classic added $25,000 to the total monies raised this year. Thank you for making
Presbyterian School a priority for your charitable dollars!
In addition to financial donations, many of you generously volunteered your time for various school activities. The amazing
dedication of POPSS committee chairs, homeroom parents, special events chairs and all the hardworking committee members is
inspiring. More than 160 parents participated as volunteers in our school. This translates to approximately 22,800 volunteer
hours given to Presbyterian School!
As you can see, there are multiple ways to become an active member of the Presbyterian School giving community. The Board
of Trustees values and appreciates all types of donations. Your time and money do make a difference. Thank you for all of the
valuable enhancements you have made possible for our students’ education. Our Annual Report is a tangible record of what we
already know happens at Presbyterian School: Family, School and Church United in the Education and Support of Each Child.
	 Sincerely yours,
	 Marilyn M. Winters
Chairman, Institutional Advancement Committee 2003 -2004 Board of Trustees

We Have Momentum
By any measure 2003-2004 was a record-setting year. The mission of our school was fully and
beautifully lived. Because of the support of individuals like yourself, Presbyterian School excelled in
teaching and provided students with a place of hope for personal achievement and growth. Presbyterian
School experienced important momentum.
We continued to benefit from the inspired and committed leadership of the Board of Trustees. My sincere gratitude is given to
the retiring 2004 trustees, Jennifer Arnold, Tom Bellows, Read Boles, Lee Lahourcade and Kimberly Sterling for their com-
mitment and years of service to the school. Their love of Presbyterian School has and will keep us headed in the right direction.
Here are a few of the highlights from the 2003-2004 school year.
• The school enrolled 432 students, the largest student enrollment in the school’s history.
• Mean standardized achievement test scores, as measured by the ERB, placed Presbyterian School students in
the top quartile nationally. This test was administered to students in grades 3 through 7. The ERB is commonly used by
private, independent schools with rigorous pre-high school and college preparatory programs.
• The student attrition rate for Alpha through grade 7 was the lowest percentage in 10 years and was lower than the National
Association of Independent Schools national average.
• The Annual Fund set an impressive record raising $412,000. A heartfelt thank you to Debbie and Bill Hanna and to Dana
and Don Miller for their vision and committed inspired leadership.
• The biennial Secret Garden Gala netted $280,000. We are grateful to Cindy Keene and Janet Jacobs for their untiring
efforts, creativity, and unwavering determination.
• The Presbyterian Panther Golf Classic netted $25,000. We applaud the energy and commitment of Chris Chaffin, Naveen
Jaggi, and Brenda Wempe for providing an occasion where everyone had fun and enjoyed important fellowship.
• Presbyterian School’s relationship with First Presbyterian Church is strong and vibrant. Senior Pastor William
Vanderbloemen led the faculty and staff in multiple communions which gave inspiration, hope and support.
There is no doubt. Our future is bright. We completed the 2003-2004 year with a balanced budget. Impressive
performance records were set in important areas essential to our strong institutional health. We have important momentum.
Thank you for being a part of this thriving community.
	Faithfully,
	 Raymond E. Johnson

In order for Presbyterian School to continue to provide for
its students and faculty, the school must rely on the yearly
contributions to the Annual Fund. A gift to
the Annual Fund enhances academic, athletic and
extracurricular programs and provides necessities not fund-
ed by yearly tuition dollars.

“The lessons I best remember from Presbyterian School were not something having to do with Math, Spanish, or History, but how to better
myself as a person. At Presbyterian School, I was given opportunities that I could never have experienced at
another school, whether it was doing a social service project at a food shelter, or camping in Utah. Since I have left Presbyterian School I
have realized how the high standard of excellence has made me a better student and person.”
— Current High School for Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA) Student
“Presbyterian School has a good and challenging environment — all the teachers are helpful. The school offered many
extracurricular activities and going to school there was a good way for me to develop many skills in arts, music and sports.
When I started high school I was very well prepared and I also had the social skills I needed to succeed.”
— Current Episcopal High School Student
“As an African-American female entering Presbyterian School, I felt uncomfortable at first, but the teachers and students made me feel a part
of the family. Presbyterian School is like a home, a place where you can grow and where everything is possible. The school opened up my life
to many opportunities that I would not have otherwise experienced.”
— Current Chinquapin School Student
“I believe that I am doing very well at St. Agnes, thanks to the strong and broad education I received at Presbyterian School.
My teachers all want to know what school I came from, because I am so well prepared.”
— Current St. Agnes’ Academy Student
“My Spanish teacher wants to know who my teacher was last year, because she says I am extremely well prepared for her class. Also, after sev-
eral weeks of Biology classes, my Advisor encouraged me to move to the Honors Biology class. I attribute all of this to the excellent instruc-
tion at Presbyterian School.”
— Current St. John’s School Student
“In Math at Presbyterian School, we would learn something with our hands, not just writing it down. Presbyterian School really helps to
prepare you for high school. After going there, you’re ahead of everyone. Presbyterian School has a good atmosphere of bringing people
together.”
— Current St. Thomas High School Student
Taking the Next StepSpecial Gifts
“An institution is merely the lengthened shadow of its people.”
— Ralph Waldo Emerson
Presbyterian School is proud of its eighth grade graduates. The high
standard of student achievement is evidenced through the words of these
recent eighth grade graduates.

  • 2. t is with great pleasure that I write to you in the first Presbyterian School Annual Report. This Annual Report is a comprehensive means of informing you about the wonderful gifts given to support our school community. The time, talents and treasures given by you to Presbyterian School have touched the lives of many children. It is evident in this report that Presbyterian School is a community of givers! Happily, financial donations to Presbyterian School continue to increase yearly. In the 2003-2004 school year, close to 500 donors gave more than $700,000 through the Annual Fund and other special events. Of special note was the generosity of our Leadership Council, Presbyterian School’s Annual Fund major donors, who provided 56% of the $412,000 Annual Fund total. In February, the entire school community celebrated together at The Secret Garden Gala while raising a record $280,000 and in May, The Presbyterian Panther Golf Classic added $25,000 to the total monies raised this year. Thank you for making Presbyterian School a priority for your charitable dollars! In addition to financial donations, many of you generously volunteered your time for various school activities. The amazing dedication of POPSS committee chairs, homeroom parents, special events chairs and all the hardworking committee members is inspiring. More than 160 parents participated as volunteers in our school. This translates to approximately 22,800 volunteer hours given to Presbyterian School! As you can see, there are multiple ways to become an active member of the Presbyterian School giving community. The Board of Trustees values and appreciates all types of donations. Your time and money do make a difference. Thank you for all of the valuable enhancements you have made possible for our students’ education. Our Annual Report is a tangible record of what we already know happens at Presbyterian School: Family, School and Church United in the Education and Support of Each Child. Sincerely yours, Marilyn M. Winters Chairman, Institutional Advancement Committee 2003 -2004 Board of Trustees Family, School and Church United in the Education and Support of Each Child. — Our Mission 1 TABLE OF CONTENTS Letter from the Chairman, IAC page 1 Letter from the Head of School page 2 Board of Trustees page 3 Revenue and Expenses page 3 Annual Fund pages 4-7 Secret Garden Gala pages 8 -10 Panther Golf Classic page 11 Special Gifts page 12 Taking the Next Step page 13 I
  • 3. We Have Momentum By any measure 2003-2004 was a record-setting year. The mission of our school was fully and beautifully lived. Because of the support of individuals like yourself, Presbyterian School excelled in teaching and provided students with a place of hope for personal achievement and growth. Presbyterian School experienced important momentum. We continued to benefit from the inspired and committed leadership of the Board of Trustees. My sincere gratitude is given to the retiring 2004 trustees, Jennifer Arnold, Tom Bellows, Read Boles, Lee Lahourcade and Kimberly Sterling for their com- mitment and years of service to the school. Their love of Presbyterian School has and will keep us headed in the right direction. Here are a few of the highlights from the 2003-2004 school year. • The school enrolled 432 students, the largest student enrollment in the school’s history. • Mean standardized achievement test scores, as measured by the ERB, placed Presbyterian School students in the top quartile nationally. This test was administered to students in grades 3 through 7. The ERB is commonly used by private, independent schools with rigorous pre-high school and college preparatory programs. • The student attrition rate for Alpha through grade 7 was the lowest percentage in 10 years and was lower than the National Association of Independent Schools national average. • The Annual Fund set an impressive record raising $412,000. A heartfelt thank you to Debbie and Bill Hanna and to Dana and Don Miller for their vision and committed inspired leadership. • The biennial Secret Garden Gala netted $280,000. We are grateful to Cindy Keene and Janet Jacobs for their untiring efforts, creativity, and unwavering determination. • The Presbyterian Panther Golf Classic netted $25,000. We applaud the energy and commitment of Chris Chaffin, Naveen Jaggi, and Brenda Wempe for providing an occasion where everyone had fun and enjoyed important fellowship. • Presbyterian School’s relationship with First Presbyterian Church is strong and vibrant. Senior Pastor William Vanderbloemen led the faculty and staff in multiple communions which gave inspiration, hope and support. There is no doubt. Our future is bright. We completed the 2003-2004 year with a balanced budget. Impressive performance records were set in important areas essential to our strong institutional health. We have important momentum. Thank you for being a part of this thriving community. Faithfully, Raymond E. At Presbyterian School, I was given opportunities that I could never have experienced at another school, whether it was doing a social service project at a food shelter, or camping in Utah. Since I have left Presbyterian School I have realized how the high standard of excellence has made me a better student and person.” — Current High School for Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA) Student “Presbyterian School has a good and challenging environment — all the teachers are helpful. The school offered many extracurricular activities and going to school there was a good way for me to develop many skills in arts, music and sports. When I started high school I was very well prepared and I also had the social skills I needed to succeed.” — Current Episcopal High School Student “As an African-American female entering Presbyterian School, I felt uncomfortable at first, but the teachers and students made me feel a part of the family. Presbyterian School is like a home, a place where you can grow and where everything is possible. The school opened up my life to many opportunities that I would not have otherwise experienced.” — Current Chinquapin School Student “I believe that I am doing very well at St. Agnes, thanks to the strong and broad education I received at Presbyterian School. My teachers all want to know what school I came from, because I am so well prepared.” — Current St. Agnes’ Academy Student “My Spanish teacher wants to know who my teacher was last year, because she says I am extremely well prepared for her class. Also, after sev- eral weeks of Biology classes, my Advisor encouraged me to move to the Honors Biology class. I attribute all of this to the excellent instruc- tion at Presbyterian School.” — Current St. John’s School Student “In Math at Presbyterian School, we would learn something with our hands, not just writing it down. Presbyterian School really helps to prepare you for high school. After going there, you’re ahead of everyone. Presbyterian School has a good atmosphere of bringing people together.” — Current St. Thomas High School Student Taking the Next StepSpecial Gifts “An institution is merely the lengthened shadow of its people.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson Presbyterian School is proud of its eighth grade graduates. The high standard of student achievement is evidenced through the words of these recent eighth grade graduates. 1312 Presbyterian School is honored to receive special gifts each year from individuals and corporations. These gifts fund various needs of the school ranging from athletics to the library to the financial aid fund.
