What is Augmented Reality?
•Augmented reality (AR) is a live, direct or indirect, view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented by computer-generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphics or GPS data
•With the help of advanced Augmented Reality technology, the information about the surrounding real world of the user becomes interactive and digitally manipulable Key Benefits of AR:
1.Novelty - AR being in an infancy stage, the onus is on organizations to make the most f this exciting and unique technology.
2.Personalization – Since AR uses concepts of your own images, it relates specifically to them and hence more engaging to a customer
3.Virality – The novelty factor will encourage users to share their experiences with their networks creating a larger pull in the market
4.Content – To create virtual product demos for consumers to make purchase decisions
5.Interactivity – The elements or surprise and personalization makes AR very entertaining and interactive and promotes use among customers

Types of AR
Location & Sensor based AR
•GPS for location based
•Native sensors such as accelerometer, digital compass & gyroscope for sensor based
•Projection of objects located in physical space
•No image processing
•Example: Wikitude
Image & Video based AR
•Camera(video feed) input is processed in real time.
•Image processing detects desired object(s) or marker(s) and calculates information about the object such as position, orientation etc.
•Example: IKEA iphone app
Sound based AR
•Microphone input is processed in real time
•Location, sensors, image or video inputs also can be taken and processed to give audio output(This is called Augmented Audio)
•Example: Konstruct iphone app

Illustrations of AR Concept Stores
Illustration 1: A London based Department Store – “Imagine Shop” The Store featured an Augmented Reality Watch Store and a digital model of a Jazz Super yacht. AR Watch Store: To try out different models from the range of watches, customers need to wrap a paper ‘marker’ around their wrists. Now when they hold their wrists in front of the tablet screen, they can view different models in real time. They can make their purchase once they like a model. Jazz Super Yacht: The 90 meter yacht can be easily viewed by the customers as a model inside the Shop and can be experienced virtually. This is possible because a ‘2D’ marker pattern guides the software to place the digital model to a correct physical location. This will allow the consumers to walk around the shop and view the model as if it was really there. Illustration 2: Adidas NEO concept stores By touching hotspots on the window the shopper can browse life sized products, make the mannequin show product details, interact with the product and make playful actions and movements. The customer can then move products to their personal shopping bag on their mobile phone by tapping an NFC tag or zapping a QR code.

Illustrations of AR Catalogs
Illustration 1: IKEA Catalog
Leading retailer IKEA has found that 14 % of its customers end up taking home furniture which turns out to be the wrong size for its intended location. With augmented reality, customers of the Swedish home furnishings giant can now try out select products in their homes with the help of a printed catalog, a mobile app and a smartphone or tablet.
Illustration 2: GQ Magazine
Any page in the magazine with the ‘GQ Live’ logo is AR-enabled. Some of the AR enhancements act like a QR code by directing traffic to a related website; others include exclusive video (both for advertisements and editorial pages) that can only be accessed by app users. Some of the video content has been a video commercial while others have been behind-the-scenes footage or interviews.

Illustrations of AR Coupons
Illustration 1: Coupon Distributor – Valpak
Consumers who download Valpak’s digital coupon app can now tap the AR feature and hold up their smartphone or tablet to the horizon to see which local businesses have Valpak coupons they can redeem. Businesses with coupons on offer pop up with identifying information that allows the user to interact with the business in real time.
Illustration 2: IBM Mobile Shopping App – TESCO retailer
This Mobile Shopping App will enable consumers to have the capability to browse store aisles and product images remotely, via their mobile devices, as well as receive advice, personalized coupons and product information.

Illustrations of AR Shopping Assistants
Illustration 1: IBM Mobile Shopping Assistant The Augmented Shopping Assistant analyzes the products in a section or aisle and ranks them by calorie content or price, saving the shoppers the time they once spent analyzing each label. The Augmented Shopping Assistant has the ability to track what items are on sale and offer instant discount coupons. Illustration 2: Amazon’s Flow Shopping Assistant You can point an app like Amazon's Flow at a product and it will come back with info and comparative pricing - making it easy to shop around and save money.

Illustrations of AR Fitting Rooms
Illustration 1: TopShop Kinect Fitting Rooms The fitting room, which was built by Russian agency AR Door, uses Microsoft Kinect and augmented reality to let shoppers try on clothes without going into a fitting room. A built-in camera recognizes a human body and superimposes a 3D model of a garment; users can switch clothes using simple gestures, powered by Kinect. Illustration 2: Tobi.com AR Fitting Room Tobi.com is the first retailer to try Fashionista, an augmented reality tool - The platform, which was developed in conjunction with augmented reality specialists Zugara, allows shoppers to see an image of clothing superimposed over themselves on their computer screen as if they are holding it up in front of a mirror.
