HOW TO BECOME A S.T.A.R. READER
• HERE IN THE LIBRARY WE HAVE FOUR BASIC RULES TO FOLLOW TO BECOMEA S.T.A.R. READER:
1. STAY SAFE
2. TAKE RESPONSIBILITY
3. ACT RESPECTFULLY
4. READY TO LEARN
RULE #1 – STAY SAFE
• THIS MEANS THAT YOU WILL NEED TO ACT IN A WAY THAT WILL ENSURE THE SAFETY OF NOT ONLY
YOURSELF OF OTHERS.
• IT IS IMPORTANT TO WALK FROM ONE PLACE TO ANOTHER.
• NO CLIMBING ON ANY SHELVES TO REACH BOOKS. THE ADULTS IN THE LIBRARY WILL BE HAPPY TO HELP YOU.
• ALWAYS CARRY YOUR BOOKS WITH CARE. YOU SHOULD EITHER HUG THEM CLOSE OR TUCK THE BOOK
SECURELY UNDER YOUR ARM. THIS WILL KEEP YOU AND OTHERS FROM TRIPPING OVER BOOKS THAT SLIP OUT
OUR YOUR ARMS.
RULE #2 – TAKE RESPONSIBILITY
• THIS MEANS THAT YOU WILL TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR ACTIONS.
• IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU TAKE CARE OF THE BOOKS THAT YOU CHECK OUT OF THE LIBRARY AND MAKE SURE
THAT YOU BRING THEM UNDAMAGED TO THE LIBRARY WHEN THEY ARE DUE. CHECKING OUT BOOKS FROM THE
LIBRARY IS A PRIVILEGE. MAKE SURE TO KEEP THEM AWAY FROM YOUNGER SIBLINGS OR PETS THAT DO NOT
UNDERSTAND HOW TO CARE FOR BOOK PROPERLY.
• WE MUST ALL TAKE CARE OF ALL THE RESOURCES IN THE LIBRARY (COMPUTERS, BOOKS, FURNITURE, ETC.).
• IF YOU ARE LOSE OR DAMAGE A BOOK OR ANY PROPERTY IN THE LIBRARY, THE STUDENTS AND HIS OR HER
FAMILY IS RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYING FOR THE DAMAGES.
RULE #3 – ACT RESPECTFULLY
• THIS MEANS IN THE LIBRARY THAT YOU WILL NEED TO FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS OF THE LIBRARIAN, THE
ASSISTANT, OR ANY ADULT THAT IS IN CHARGE OF THE LIBRARY THAT DAY.
• LISTENING IS VERY IMPORTANT. WHEN ANOTHER STUDENT OR A TEACHER IS SPEAKING, LISTEN TO WHAT THEY
ARE SAYING.
RULE #4 – READY TO LEARN
• DURING YOUR LIBRARY TIME WE WILL BE WORKING ON MANY OF THE SAMESKILLS THAT YOU WILL BE
WORKING ON IN THE CLASSROOM. BE READY TO PARTICIPATE IN THE LESSONS AND HAVE FUN.
• COME INTO THE LIBRARY AND FOLLOW DIRECTIONS FOR THE LESSON OR ACTIVITY.
A FEW EXTRA THINGS TO REMEMBER
BOOK DROP BOX
• THE BOOK DROP BOX:
• WHEN YOUR CLASS COMES TO THE LIBRARY HAVE YOUR BOOK READY TO RETURN. THERE IS A BOOK DROP BOX
AVAILABLE AT THE LIBRARY DESK FOR BOOK RETURNS.
• IF YOU ARE RETURNING A BOOK AT ANY OTHER TIME PLACE YOUR BOOK IN THE DROP BOX QUIETLY. PLEASE DO
NOT INTERRUPT IF THERE IS A CLASS IN THE LIBRARY. IF THERE IS NOT A CLASS IN THE LIBRARY AND YOU HAVE
A QUESTION FOR THE LIBRARIAN FEEL FREE TO ASK (I DON’T BITE!).
BOOK SHELF PLACE HOLDERS
• WHEN LOOKING AT BOOKS ON THE SHELF ALWAYS REMEMBER TO USE YOUR PLACE HOLDER.
• PLACE THE HOLDER IN THE SPOT WHERE THE BOOK WAS LOCATED. LOOK OVER THE BOOK (READ THE BACK
COVER.). IF YOU DECIDE THAT IT IS NOT A BOOK THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO CHECK OUT, PLACE YOUR BOOK
BACK IN THE PLACE WHERE IT IS BEING HELD. THEN PULL OUT YOUR PLACE HOLDER AND MOVE ON.
• USING PLACE HOLDER ENSURES THAT THE BOOKS IN THE LIBRARY STAY ORGANIZED.
ONE FINAL THING

  • 8. BOOK DROP BOX • THE BOOK DROP BOX: • WHEN YOUR CLASS COMES TO THE LIBRARY HAVE YOUR BOOK READY TO RETURN. THERE IS A BOOK DROP BOX AVAILABLE AT THE LIBRARY DESK FOR BOOK RETURNS. • IF YOU ARE RETURNING A BOOK AT ANY OTHER TIME PLACE YOUR BOOK IN THE DROP BOX QUIETLY. PLEASE DO NOT INTERRUPT IF THERE IS A CLASS IN THE LIBRARY. IF THERE IS NOT A CLASS IN THE LIBRARY AND YOU HAVE A QUESTION FOR THE LIBRARIAN FEEL FREE TO ASK (I DON’T BITE!).
  • 9. BOOK SHELF PLACE HOLDERS • WHEN LOOKING AT BOOKS ON THE SHELF ALWAYS REMEMBER TO USE YOUR PLACE HOLDER. • PLACE THE HOLDER IN THE SPOT WHERE THE BOOK WAS LOCATED. LOOK OVER THE BOOK (READ THE BACK COVER.). IF YOU DECIDE THAT IT IS NOT A BOOK THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO CHECK OUT, PLACE YOUR BOOK BACK IN THE PLACE WHERE IT IS BEING HELD. THEN PULL OUT YOUR PLACE HOLDER AND MOVE ON. • USING PLACE HOLDER ENSURES THAT THE BOOKS IN THE LIBRARY STAY ORGANIZED.
