Computing @ SCILS 08/11/08 stj 2004 Computing @ SCILS 08/11/08 stj 2004 You can quickly go through the myRutgers slides. The info is easy to go through independently by the students. More time should be reserved for the SFTP section since it includes the hands-on demo. Mention the search options, at the top right of the page. The “Shortcuts” section contains useful links. myRutgers “help” section is directly below “Shortcuts” but not pictured.
Computing @ SCILS 08/11/08 stj 2004 Computing @ SCILS 08/11/08 stj 2004 The following myRutgers slides need to be updated to reflect the new interface. You can quickly go through them and then show students the updated interface by logging in via a web browser.
Computing @ SCILS 08/11/08 stj 2004 Computing @ SCILS 08/11/08 stj 2004 Webmail is an alternative to myRutgers for accessing Eden email…not sure if it works for ScarletApps.
This is the Rutgers Google Apps for Education suite. Called ScarletApps, it includes the most popular Google Apps - Gmail, Docs, Calendar, etc. as well as the recent addition of many of the applications formerly available only with personal Google accounts. New students should register for this service. It should make sharing for presentations and other group projects a bit easier. Computing @ SCILS

Computing @ SCILS 08/11/08 stj 2004 Computing @ SCILS 08/11/08 stj 2004 Mention to students that some professors use Sakai. Ecollege seems to be more popular at the moment (2012), but who knows what the future holds.
Computing @ SCILS 08/11/08 stj 2004 Computing @ SCILS 08/11/08 stj 2004 Mention: scanning One scanner is avail in SC&I room 202 but only to those with a code (so PhDs, TAs, etc). It looks like scanning is avail for free for Rutgers students at scanning stations in the libraries: http://www.libraries.rutgers.edu/rul/lib_servs/imaging_services.shtml#self_serv_scanning
Computing @ SCILS 08/11/08 stj 2004 Computing @ SCILS 08/11/08 stj 2004 Regarding printing - $30 allocated per student each semester. You don’t typically come close to exhausting this limit. Also, top secret intel: the printer on the 3 rd floor grad student lab, mentioned on previous slide, does not currently subtract from your print allocation.

Although there are some changes, all of the above links are still active and in the same positions, therefore I’ve opted not to switch out the screenshot just yet. Computing @ SCILS 08/11/08 stj 2004 Computing @ SCILS 08/11/08 stj 2004 Students can use RADS or other antivirus software, but some protection is highly recommendeed. Examples: Norton, McAfee or AVG Free.

Computing @ SCILS 08/11/08 stj 2004 Computing @ SCILS 08/11/08 stj 2004 Show students how to "be wired" by cable to their router or broadband modem, in case they want a web service where it is better to be connected by wire than by using the wireless signal transmitted by their router or modem. This can be accomplished by asking them to look at the PCs in front of them, and to trace the blue ethernet cord from the computer to the networking hub. In their homes, the networking hub would be replaced by their wireless router or cable modem. A simplified diagram can be found here: http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/a-typical-computer-networking-setup0.html
Computing @ SCILS 08/11/08 stj 2004 Computing @ SCILS 08/11/08 stj 2004 Both WinSCP and Filezilla should be installed on the SC&I lab workstations in room 119. Filezilla is NOT installed on the computers in the grad lab on the 3 rd floor of SC&I. Not sure about the grad lab on the 3 rd floor of Alex. You’ll want to mention the importance of this concept for the 550 class. The Eden server is where each student’s website will be hosted. So they will need to learn how to transfer files from a local machine to the Eden server. To illustrate the concept, show them http://eden.rutgers.edu/~davisd or your own Eden website.
Computing @ SCILS 08/11/08 stj 2004 Mention that there are other tools out there for Mac users. But we will demo Filezilla concurrent with WinSCP. Only need to go into detail on Filezilla if there are Mac users present (and only if they brought their machines). Otherwise, mention that they can refer back to the slide and contact RU ASIS&T if there are questions: http://ruasist.rutgers.edu/contactus/
Computing @ SCILS 08/11/08 stj 2004 Once again, this slide can be quickly touched upon if there are no Mac users in attendance. You’ll want to point out the “Local site” side on the left vs. the “Remote site” side on the right.
The file structure is the layout of folders in a particular directory. Keep these in sync when copying files from one machine to the other. When saving your work, use a flash drive to copy the higher-level directory. In the example above, it would be C:\\Users\\davisd\\Documents\\ex1. Doublecheck that each sub-directory is copied (“css” and “images”). Computing @ SCILS
For that last bullet point, you can go through the steps to show them how to do this. Also, please mention the following coding tips. Computing @ SCILS

Computing @ SCILS 08/11/08 stj 2004 Computing @ SCILS 08/11/08 stj 2004 Bookmarking: Delicious bookmarks are searchable, so they are a great “getting started” resource. You’ll get results that other people have decided were relevant to your search terms! You can add notes to your bookmarks to help you remember why you liked them (e.g., good bio; good quote on p. 23). You can make your bookmarks private or share them with others. Calls and IM: For Skype: in terms of hardware, encourage students to get a headset with mic since this will be very useful in online classes and/or if they want to interact with instructor or other students using audio / video conferencing. Meebo is used by RUL for chat reference. The Libraries presenter will go into more detail. Screencasting and Presentations: Students interested in screencasting can get set up with a Panapto account by emailing sgarwood@rutgers.edu.
