Server Management teams need to:
 Coordinate Server Builds (Incl. Bare metal up)
 Deploy and manage both Physical and Virtual servers
 Patch operating systems on application clusters (Client-Server Apps)
 Patch Middleware Applications
 Find an easier way to Automate routine system administrator tasks
They have Multiple Tools and Teams and skill sets to
manage distributed and datacenter servers across
all platforms with no integration
Ongoing Budget reductions forcing IT Managers to improve efficiency!

How do I manage the lifecycle of EVERY Endpoint ?
© 2013 IBM Corporation10
IBM Endpoint Manager
Reduce human errors, simplify application lifecycle management
 Physical Server Build – Single Server- e.g.
Deploy OS, Install Mozilla Firefox 18.0 followed by
an upgrade to 18.0.2; Deploy middleware and
application stacks
 Virtual Server Build – Provision a VM from ISO
or Template and deploy software
 Server Patch (Client-Server scenario) - Shut
down client services, stop server, apply patch to
server, restart server, start client services
 Sequenced OS Patching – Across different
environments (across systems that form a
service, e.g. email)
 Patch Rollout – Patch machines 1-10, then 11-
50, then 51-1000 (patch Development, then patch
Test, then patch Production Environment)
How do I lower costs for server builds and patching?
Task sequencing
Update 90,000 servers in days with
70% less infrastructure than currently
using. Patch the OS of a client-server
system in 1 hour or build a 2 tier
application in hours.
Take endpoint automation to the next level:

IBM Endpoint Manager
Reduce costs & improve operational efficiency with custom automation
 Leverage “Out of the Box” IEM fixlets,
Tasks and baselines in an Automation
Plan across groups of related servers
 No programming skill required - Simple
UI to build automation
 Higher levels of automation - All plans
can be created, saved, and re-used
 Conditional logic for each step in a plan
(initially success/failure)
 View execution of plans - Completed
and running with drilldown
How do I automate labor intensive system administrator tasks?

Customer Engagement Example
“Server Automation is exactly what we need!”
‱ Customer has a Homegrown solution that they are finding difficult to maintain.
‱ They need to drive an ordered sequence of patching/updating a Client/Server application
across many endpoints in what they call a ―Site‖.
‱ Each site has 1 Database Server, 1 Application Server and roughly 100 client computers.
They need to perform these process several times each month with Endpoint Manager:
‱ Upgrade the DB server
‱ If successful, upgrade the Application server
‱ If 1& 2 are successful upgrade the Client workstations
‱ If any Failures occur, stop further updates
Other requirements:
‱ Scheduling
‱ Targeting by custom computer property
‱ Download/pre-cache updates and save automation plans as templates for each ―Site‖

  • 10. © 2013 IBM Corporation10 IBM Endpoint Manager Reduce human errors, simplify application lifecycle management  Physical Server Build – Single Server- e.g. Deploy OS, Install Mozilla Firefox 18.0 followed by an upgrade to 18.0.2; Deploy middleware and application stacks  Virtual Server Build – Provision a VM from ISO or Template and deploy software  Server Patch (Client-Server scenario) - Shut down client services, stop server, apply patch to server, restart server, start client services  Sequenced OS Patching – Across different environments (across systems that form a service, e.g. email)  Patch Rollout – Patch machines 1-10, then 11- 50, then 51-1000 (patch Development, then patch Test, then patch Production Environment) How do I lower costs for server builds and patching? Task sequencing Update 90,000 servers in days with 70% less infrastructure than currently using. Patch the OS of a client-server system in 1 hour or build a 2 tier application in hours. Take endpoint automation to the next level:

  • 17. © 2013 IBM Corporation17 IBM Endpoint Manager Customer Engagement Example “Server Automation is exactly what we need!” ‱ Customer has a Homegrown solution that they are finding difficult to maintain. ‱ They need to drive an ordered sequence of patching/updating a Client/Server application across many endpoints in what they call a ―Site‖. ‱ Each site has 1 Database Server, 1 Application Server and roughly 100 client computers. They need to perform these process several times each month with Endpoint Manager: ‱ Upgrade the DB server ‱ If successful, upgrade the Application server ‱ If 1& 2 are successful upgrade the Client workstations ‱ If any Failures occur, stop further updates Other requirements: ‱ Scheduling ‱ Targeting by custom computer property ‱ Download/pre-cache updates and save automation plans as templates for each ―Site‖

  1. Building and maintaining data center servers can be a time consuming and error prone process. Highly skilled administrators can spend a great deal of painstakingly installing and configuring software which takes time away from task that could deliver more business value. With the automation capabilities delivered in Server Automation the server build task can be captured in scripts and reused by less skilled workers to free up the time of highly skilled workers to add more business value. This enables IT to improve customer satisfaction by delivering servers and new services faster. In many cases the time to build a server can be reduced from days or weeks to hours. These large increases in productivity is just what the line of business and CFOs are looking for in today’s fast paced environment. In addition this same automation capability can be used to maintain the servers and automate what can be a complex set of steps for applying patches to tiered application environments.Transition: Let’s see how automate can save time and money with an example.
  2. Endpoint Manager provides a number of out of the box fixlets that perform a variety of tasks and the number of fixlets grows every week. These fixlets can be used as is or customized to meet the specific needs of your environment. In the example at the right a multi-tier application needs to be upgraded. This application uses a database server, application server and code on the client workstation that must be upgraded in order and each step is dependent on the previous steps. With Server Automation these steps can be coded in a script without the need for programming skills. The script can be saved and reused as a basis for other automation tasks, saving time and money. Through the Endpoint Manager console the status of the automation plans can be viewed and followed to completion. These automation capabilities can result in significant cost savings and operational efficiency. Transition: The addition of Endpoint Manager for Server Automation can truly expand your endpoint management to new levels.
