The New Landscape of Work
In organizations around the world, the workforce is changing.
The expectations of workers are changing. How work gets done
is changing. The tools of work are changing. There is a new
landscape of work.
Mobile technology allows work to be done almost anywhere,
yet many offices are designed as though all the work is expected
to occur at a singular point—the workstation. Collaboration is
increasingly seen as the primary means of generating better ideas
faster, yet few spaces allow for it to occur naturally—and even
fewer actively encourage it.
Herman Miller wants to help you create workplaces that better
support your people while fulfilling the government’s requirement
for reductions in real estate spending. When you are ready to
rethink the possibilities of an office that can help your organization
do more for the people it serves, Herman Miller is here to help.
Introduction
Creating a Living Office
®
At Herman Miller, we are collaborating with the world’s leading
thinkers and designers to apply a greater understanding of people—
how we think, create, and interact—to the design of workplaces that
harness the innate motivations of people. We believe these types
of environments enable purpose and encourage everyone to strive
for high levels of achievement.
To create workplaces that feel intuitive, we begin with an understanding
of what is fundamental to all humans—our experiences and motivations.
We then consider the unique purpose, character, and activities of
the individuals and groups who inhabit these spaces and of the
organizations that employ them.
Building on this foundation, we work with you to create settings—
spaces optimized to support work and interaction—that can fluidly
change as work evolves. The right mix of settings can help you create
a workplace that supports and engages people, so your organization
can accomplish its mission.

How You Work
Shapes Where You Work
The ways people work are clearly changing. Today, as government
agencies grapple with increasingly complex issues, many view
collaboration as a swift, reliable process for generating creative solutions.
Herman Miller spent the past two decades studying collaboration
to best understand how working together affects people and
their environments. As our researchers collected data on the behaviors
that drive productive collaboration, we also recognized the continued
importance of solo work—even in the most collaborative environment.
We synthesized this research into 10 activities—seven collaborative
activities people do in groups of two or more, and three focused,
individual activities. No matter the size or location of your organization,
some combination of these 10 activities constitutes everyday work
for your people. Considering these needs in the design of your space
will help your people and organization become more productive
and effective.

Renew™
Sit-to-Stand Table
Designed by Brian Alexander
Supporting your body as you move is a concept we defined and
designed into every one of our work chairs. Renew Sit-to-Stand
Tables take healthful movement to a new level. Combined with
a great chair, they give you a full range of supported movement
to help you stay more active and healthier while you work.
Together, they reduce the physical stresses that put you at risk
for aches and pains so you can keep up a steady flow of energy
and ideas.
A seamless wire management design also eases your work
experience. It routes cords from all your desktop tools into a
cable trough below the table, keeping them out of sight even
when the table is raised. Power can be passed through the base
for a clean aesthetic.

Ethospace®
System
Designed by Bill Stumpf and Jack Kelley
From the printing press to 3-D printing, technology drives change.
That change was particularly dramatic when the computer was
first introduced. Designers Bill Stumpf and Jack Kelley saw that
the offices of the time weren’t responding well to those changes
or people’s needs in adapting to them. They saw too many instances
of design that, as Stumpf said, “denies the human spirit.”
The two set out to do better.
Their solution was Ethospace. Updated and expanded regularly
since then, Ethospace offers organizations design choices
and the flexibility to meet the shifting demands of work.
Ethospace is flexible, durable, and tailored for technology.
Tuxedo Component Lounge™

Mirra 2 Chair
Designed by Studio 7.5
As work evolves, and we become more active, shifting from
individual to collaborative work in an instant, we need tools
designed to be as agile as our work style. To address this need,
the designers of Studio 7.5 set out to create a high-performing chair
that supports people who work in a constant state of motion.
Mirra 2 moves with you, at one with your body. When you sit,
the seat and back adapt to you instantly. With dynamic surfaces
that respond to your slightest movements and simple, intuitive
adjustments to fine-tune the fit, Mirra 2 balances immediate
comfort and personalized ergonomics in one sophisticated design.

working together and alone, and in seated or standing postures.
With close proximity to each other and to everything needed to
comfortably complete tasks, individuals can be more focused,
creative, and free to do their best.
Aeron
®
Chair
Designed by Bill Stumpf and Don Chadwick
Own the problem, and define it as deeply as you can. Bill Stumpf
echoed this mantra on every project he took on for Herman Miller,
but perhaps never more completely than with the groundbreaking
Aeron Chair. Working with Don Chadwick, Stumpf began thinking
about what a chair ought to do for you by consulting people who
spend a lot of time in chairs—older people in retirement centers.
When Stumpf and Chadwick took what they learned and applied
it to work seating, they started a revolution in ergonomics.
With its aeration, inclusive sizing, support for the natural ways
the human body moves when seated, and environmentally sensitive
design, Aeron challenged practically every convention about office
chairs. It wasn’t upholstered. It wasn’t padded. And its designers’
ideas about what they called “cross-performance” work—a mix
of high-intensity tasks and casual interaction—anticipated the
realities of today’s workplace, where the technological and social
aspects of work have become increasingly intertwined.

Embody
®
Chair
Designed by Bill Stumpf and Jeff Weber
Embody began with the recognition of a previously unsolved
problem: the lack of physical harmony between people and
their technology. Spending too much time sitting in front of our
laptops or staring at our tablets, moving nothing but our fingers,
can make us stiff and tired because our bodies are made to move.
With Embody, designers Bill Stumpf and Jeff Weber set out to
solve this problem.
More than 30 physicians and PhDs in the fields of biomechanics,
vision, physical therapy, and ergonomics contributed their
expertise to help guide the development of this chair. As a result,
Embody has set a new benchmark for pressure distribution,
natural alignment, and support for healthy movement in
ergonomic seating.

Resolve
®
System
Designed by Ayse Birsel
Place can act as a powerful instrument to express an
organization’s unique culture and progress its unique ambitions.
Resolve is a system that contributes to places that drive greater
connectivity, creativity, productivity, and prosperity for individuals
and their organizations.
Resolve puts people into soothing environments that mimic
the natural world. Its structure is based on the 120-degree angle,
common in nature (think honeycombs and tree branches).
The open angle provides an inviting work area, encourages
interaction with colleagues, and gives even small spaces a
spacious feel. Air and light pass through. People can see in
and out, unconfined by panels or walls. Screens and canopies
provide a sense of enclosure. People feel comfortable, valued,
and connected.

33Product Solutions for Individual Work
Action Office System
Designed by Robert Propst and Jack Kelley
For the individual, Action Office can be configured to support three
of our most fundamental needs—privacy, a safe place, and what
designer Robert Propst called involvement: “to be part of, visible,
wanted, needed, recognized, part of the family of activity.” For
the organization, Action Office provides a return on investment
through its longevity, durability, low cost, and ability to reconfigure
and update easily. It’s a workplace solution that’s proven,
practical, and economical.
Tu Storage
Light in scale, Tu Storage fits well in settings where space is
at a premium. The multifunctional design creates boundary
between workspaces and offers storage for evolving personal
and work needs.
Sayl Chair
Designed by Yves Béhar
Good design, healthy support, and exceptional value are always
attractive—and Sayl delivers all three. By using smart engineering
to transform simple materials, we were able to make Sayl attainable
for more people. Fewer parts and less material also mean a smaller
environmental impact.
Sayl designer Yves Béhar and our development team considered
and reconsidered every part of the chair—and, in the end, created
a better, smarter chair that sets the reference point in its class for
quality, performance, and design.

35Product Solutions for Individual Work
The Federal Government is one of many
organizations that is realizing the necessity
of supportive workplaces designed around
the needs of people. A recent CoreNet Global
study of workplace productivity underlines
this shift in perspective. In the survey of
leaders from a broad range of industries,
61 percent said that real estate and facilities
have an impact on organizational productivity,
while 82 percent said they can increase
employee satisfaction.
Informed by studies such as this, the U.S. General
Services Administration has begun instituting initiatives
such as their Total Workplace Program, which helps
government agencies redesign their offices to become
more efficient, effective, and sustainable.
At Herman Miller, we are taking a similar approach
to the design of our facilities. Recently, we set about
transforming our home, the Design Yard, into a
Living Office that would support an organization
of high-performing individuals and their networks.
In our vision, the Design Yard would enrich both
individuals and our business. It would bring people
closer together through a shared sense of community
and purpose, and encourage people to contribute
their most meaningful work.

Ongoing research and insight from our Performance
Environments Group—a team that uses a mix of
methodologies to help customers optimize their work
environments—informed the redesign. They used the
same techniques they use with customers to analyze
the Design Yard. One such approach is observational
ethnography—a study of the ways people interact
with each other, their tools and technology, and the
space itself. We also measured space utilization with
electronic sensors—a technology we developed and
regularly use with customers. This research revealed
that dedicated workstations went unoccupied as
much as 60 percent of the time.
Using this research as a guide, we formulated a
plan that would meet the needs of the organization,
enhance the employee experience, and enable the
most effective use of the new space. Without adding
to the existing facility, the new design would
accommodate 40 percent more people.
To create a Living Office at the Design Yard, we began
with an understanding of what is fundamental to all
humans—their experiences and motivations—and
then considered our organization’s unique purpose,
character, and activities.
At Herman Miller, we want to make a meaningful
difference in the world by taking an original,
human-centered approach to solving the problems
people face. We offer inspiring designs to help people
do great things. We believe that this purpose should
always be evident in our workplaces.
Understanding the character of our organization—
more diverse, casual, and interdependent,
to name a few aspects—helps us understand how to
create a space that tells people who we are and how
we work. A workplace that expresses the character
of the organization and the work being done helps
people progress toward common goals.
Also, to understand the activities of the people
working here, we conducted an Activities Assessment.
This research revealed that Chat, Converse, Create,
Process & Respond, and Show & Tell were high
priorities to the organization.
Our work to identify the activities of the inhabitants
of the Design Yard helped us create a purposeful mix
of settings—and determine the ideal arrangement of
surroundings, tools, and furnishings to best support
individual and group work.
Our Plaza is one setting where this approach is
evident. It’s an open, inviting space with a variety
of furnishings to support a broad range of activities.
The Plaza features a coffee bar, lounge area,
and outdoor seating where people gather for
conversations with coworkers at nearby tables,
catch up on emails, or decompress after a meeting.
It isn’t just a place for socializing; it’s also a great
place to work. People perch at the coffee bar to work
on laptops or tablets. Residents and visitors alike
enjoy the energy in the space, as well as the close
proximity to a full-time tech expert, stationed at the
coffee bar and ready to help people resolve their
issues with technology.

If a task calls for complete concentration, nearby quiet
spaces—called Havens—are available. These zones
are optimized for individual use, and include our library,
with soft lighting and generous work surfaces, and
adjacent phone booths and small studios that offer
greater privacy.
With a variety of places to work and many
opportunities to connect with others, the Plaza
has become a people magnet and an incubator
for new ideas.
In our marketing area, we’ve increased the number
of people from 50 to 126 without increasing the
size of the space. The space is designed to be a
Hive Setting, which leverages proximity as a means
to drive work forward.
In one part of the Hive, a pair of long benches allows
team members to discuss and develop ideas, and
offers everyone an opportunity to work with a different
mix of people each day. Tackable wall surfaces
encourage the group to share the creative process
with each other and with the organization at large.
The team resides near other departments with which
they frequently engage. This thoughtful placement
facilitates communication and eases the workflow.
All of these improvements have led to increased
activity and engagement. Most days, all of the seats
at the community benches are occupied, as employees
are drawn into the office for the benefit of co-creation
with colleagues. With so many people working closely
and sharing ideas, the problem-solving process is
happening faster and with more inspiring results.
As you can see, we’ve taken a different approach to
how we manage our work, the tools and technologies
that enable it, and the places where we come together
to do it. Employing our research and experience with
customers, we’ve designed a place where our people
can realize their full potential, and where visitors will
get a sense for how a Living Office could improve their
own experience of work.
In the Hive, people can easily
gather for quick conversations
about projects.

The function and contours of Setu were shaped by the world around

has changed how we work, where we work, and how we move

of settings—but spending less time in each spot. We expect to be
able to work anywhere and everywhere, and we need furniture that

across the system also furthers organizational goals: enhancing
the patient experience of care, improving the health of populations,
and reducing the per-capita cost of healthcare. The result for all is
a more natural and desirable place to work and heal.

Compass™
System
Designed by Gianfranco Zaccai
Healthcare organizations face an ongoing challenge in

interchangeable components for hospital and outpatient facilities,
Compass is used to create applications for patient rooms, exam
rooms, caregiver work areas, and other clinical spaces.

  • 5. 3 The New Landscape of Work In organizations around the world, the workforce is changing. The expectations of workers are changing. How work gets done is changing. The tools of work are changing. There is a new landscape of work. Mobile technology allows work to be done almost anywhere, yet many offices are designed as though all the work is expected to occur at a singular point—the workstation. Collaboration is increasingly seen as the primary means of generating better ideas faster, yet few spaces allow for it to occur naturally—and even fewer actively encourage it. Herman Miller wants to help you create workplaces that better support your people while fulfilling the government’s requirement for reductions in real estate spending. When you are ready to rethink the possibilities of an office that can help your organization do more for the people it serves, Herman Miller is here to help. Introduction
  • 6. Creating a Living Office ® At Herman Miller, we are collaborating with the world’s leading thinkers and designers to apply a greater understanding of people— how we think, create, and interact—to the design of workplaces that harness the innate motivations of people. We believe these types of environments enable purpose and encourage everyone to strive for high levels of achievement. To create workplaces that feel intuitive, we begin with an understanding of what is fundamental to all humans—our experiences and motivations. We then consider the unique purpose, character, and activities of the individuals and groups who inhabit these spaces and of the organizations that employ them. Building on this foundation, we work with you to create settings— spaces optimized to support work and interaction—that can fluidly change as work evolves. The right mix of settings can help you create a workplace that supports and engages people, so your organization can accomplish its mission.
  • 8. How You Work Shapes Where You Work The ways people work are clearly changing. Today, as government agencies grapple with increasingly complex issues, many view collaboration as a swift, reliable process for generating creative solutions. Herman Miller spent the past two decades studying collaboration to best understand how working together affects people and their environments. As our researchers collected data on the behaviors that drive productive collaboration, we also recognized the continued importance of solo work—even in the most collaborative environment. We synthesized this research into 10 activities—seven collaborative activities people do in groups of two or more, and three focused, individual activities. No matter the size or location of your organization, some combination of these 10 activities constitutes everyday work for your people. Considering these needs in the design of your space will help your people and organization become more productive and effective.

  • 12. A Haven is a small shelter where focused work can be done without distraction—or alternatively, a place to unwind. A Jump Space consists of highly approachable work points that facilitate work for a distinct and discrete period of time between other activities. A Clubhouse is a working neighborhood that generally belongs to a team assigned to a specific, long-term project. Spaces That Serve People Better Living Office provides people with10 distinct workplace settings. Each setting offers a spatial recipe that considers the optimal arrangement of surroundings, furnishings, and tools to best support the activities of individuals and groups in ways that are fundamental to all human beings.

Renew Sit-to-Stand Tables take healthful movement to a new level. Combined with a great chair, they give you a full range of supported movement to help you stay more active and healthier while you work. Together, they reduce the physical stresses that put you at risk for aches and pains so you can keep up a steady flow of energy and ideas. A seamless wire management design also eases your work experience. It routes cords from all your desktop tools into a cable trough below the table, keeping them out of sight even when the table is raised. Power can be passed through the base for a clean aesthetic. • 19. 17 Ethospace® System Designed by Bill Stumpf and Jack Kelley From the printing press to 3-D printing, technology drives change. That change was particularly dramatic when the computer was first introduced. Designers Bill Stumpf and Jack Kelley saw that the offices of the time weren’t responding well to those changes or people’s needs in adapting to them. They saw too many instances of design that, as Stumpf said, “denies the human spirit.” The two set out to do better. Their solution was Ethospace. Updated and expanded regularly since then, Ethospace offers organizations design choices and the flexibility to meet the shifting demands of work. Ethospace is flexible, durable, and tailored for technology. Tuxedo Component Lounge™ Designed by BassamFellows for Geiger ® Marrying the flexibility and functionality of sectional seating with the elegance of a highly tailored sofa, BassamFellows’ Tuxedo Component Lounge is built on a series of simple base elements from which a full array of configurations is possible. Its modular grid allows for endless variation: seat, back, corner, and arm unit can be coupled with single-, double-, or triple-base platforms. Product Solutions for Individual Work
  • 20. Mirra 2 Chair Designed by Studio 7.5 As work evolves, and we become more active, shifting from individual to collaborative work in an instant, we need tools designed to be as agile as our work style. To address this need, the designers of Studio 7.5 set out to create a high-performing chair that supports people who work in a constant state of motion. Mirra 2 moves with you, at one with your body. When you sit, the seat and back adapt to you instantly. With dynamic surfaces that respond to your slightest movements and simple, intuitive adjustments to fine-tune the fit, Mirra 2 balances immediate comfort and personalized ergonomics in one sophisticated design. • 22. Locale™ Designed by Sam Hecht and Kim Colin Locale elements enable people to seamlessly transition between working together and alone, and in seated or standing postures. With close proximity to each other and to everything needed to comfortably complete tasks, individuals can be more focused, creative, and free to do their best. Aeron ® Chair Designed by Bill Stumpf and Don Chadwick Own the problem, and define it as deeply as you can. Bill Stumpf echoed this mantra on every project he took on for Herman Miller, but perhaps never more completely than with the groundbreaking Aeron Chair. Working with Don Chadwick, Stumpf began thinking about what a chair ought to do for you by consulting people who spend a lot of time in chairs—older people in retirement centers. When Stumpf and Chadwick took what they learned and applied it to work seating, they started a revolution in ergonomics. With its aeration, inclusive sizing, support for the natural ways the human body moves when seated, and environmentally sensitive design, Aeron challenged practically every convention about office chairs. It wasn’t upholstered. It wasn’t padded. And its designers’ ideas about what they called “cross-performance” work—a mix of high-intensity tasks and casual interaction—anticipated the realities of today’s workplace, where the technological and social aspects of work have become increasingly intertwined. • 25. 23 Embody ® Chair Designed by Bill Stumpf and Jeff Weber Embody began with the recognition of a previously unsolved problem: the lack of physical harmony between people and their technology. Spending too much time sitting in front of our laptops or staring at our tablets, moving nothing but our fingers, can make us stiff and tired because our bodies are made to move. With Embody, designers Bill Stumpf and Jeff Weber set out to solve this problem. More than 30 physicians and PhDs in the fields of biomechanics, vision, physical therapy, and ergonomics contributed their expertise to help guide the development of this chair. As a result, Embody has set a new benchmark for pressure distribution, natural alignment, and support for healthy movement in ergonomic seating. Resolve is a system that contributes to places that drive greater connectivity, creativity, productivity, and prosperity for individuals and their organizations. Resolve puts people into soothing environments that mimic the natural world. Its structure is based on the 120-degree angle, common in nature (think honeycombs and tree branches). The open angle provides an inviting work area, encourages interaction with colleagues, and gives even small spaces a spacious feel. Air and light pass through. People can see in and out, unconfined by panels or walls. Screens and canopies provide a sense of enclosure. People feel comfortable, valued, and connected. It’s a workplace solution that’s proven, practical, and economical. Tu Storage Light in scale, Tu Storage fits well in settings where space is at a premium. Sayl designer Yves Béhar and our development team considered and reconsidered every part of the chair—and, in the end, created a better, smarter chair that sets the reference point in its class for quality, performance, and design. • 38. The Federal Government is one of many organizations that is realizing the necessity of supportive workplaces designed around the needs of people. A recent CoreNet Global study of workplace productivity underlines this shift in perspective. In the survey of leaders from a broad range of industries, 61 percent said that real estate and facilities have an impact on organizational productivity, while 82 percent said they can increase employee satisfaction. Informed by studies such as this, the U.S. General Services Administration has begun instituting initiatives such as their Total Workplace Program, which helps government agencies redesign their offices to become more efficient, effective, and sustainable. At Herman Miller, we are taking a similar approach to the design of our facilities. Recently, we set about transforming our home, the Design Yard, into a Living Office that would support an organization of high-performing individuals and their networks. In our vision, the Design Yard would enrich both individuals and our business. It would bring people closer together through a shared sense of community and purpose, and encourage people to contribute their most meaningful work. Designing Our Living Office Herman Miller’s home is a place where people are inspired to do their best work. HERMAN MILLER DESIGN YARD HOLLAND, MICHIGAN COMPANY PROFILE

  • 40. An enclosed Haven offers the privacy needed for phone calls or concentrative work.< A Jump Space provides a place for visitors or remote employees to touch down and work for brief periods of time. <
  • 41. 39 Ongoing research and insight from our Performance Environments Group—a team that uses a mix of methodologies to help customers optimize their work environments—informed the redesign. They used the same techniques they use with customers to analyze the Design Yard. One such approach is observational ethnography—a study of the ways people interact with each other, their tools and technology, and the space itself. We also measured space utilization with electronic sensors—a technology we developed and regularly use with customers. This research revealed that dedicated workstations went unoccupied as much as 60 percent of the time. Using this research as a guide, we formulated a plan that would meet the needs of the organization, enhance the employee experience, and enable the most effective use of the new space. Without adding to the existing facility, the new design would accommodate 40 percent more people. To create a Living Office at the Design Yard, we began with an understanding of what is fundamental to all humans—their experiences and motivations—and then considered our organization’s unique purpose, character, and activities. At Herman Miller, we want to make a meaningful difference in the world by taking an original, human-centered approach to solving the problems people face. We offer inspiring designs to help people do great things. We believe that this purpose should always be evident in our workplaces. Understanding the character of our organization— more diverse, casual, and interdependent, to name a few aspects—helps us understand how to create a space that tells people who we are and how we work. A workplace that expresses the character of the organization and the work being done helps people progress toward common goals. Also, to understand the activities of the people working here, we conducted an Activities Assessment. This research revealed that Chat, Converse, Create, Process & Respond, and Show & Tell were high priorities to the organization. Our work to identify the activities of the inhabitants of the Design Yard helped us create a purposeful mix of settings—and determine the ideal arrangement of surroundings, tools, and furnishings to best support individual and group work. Our Plaza is one setting where this approach is evident. It’s an open, inviting space with a variety of furnishings to support a broad range of activities. The Plaza features a coffee bar, lounge area, and outdoor seating where people gather for conversations with coworkers at nearby tables, catch up on emails, or decompress after a meeting. It isn’t just a place for socializing; it’s also a great place to work. People perch at the coffee bar to work on laptops or tablets. Residents and visitors alike enjoy the energy in the space, as well as the close proximity to a full-time tech expert, stationed at the coffee bar and ready to help people resolve their issues with technology. Company Profile The Plaza offers a broad array of furnishings that enables a variety of activities and supporting postures. <

  • 44. If a task calls for complete concentration, nearby quiet spaces—called Havens—are available. These zones are optimized for individual use, and include our library, with soft lighting and generous work surfaces, and adjacent phone booths and small studios that offer greater privacy. With a variety of places to work and many opportunities to connect with others, the Plaza has become a people magnet and an incubator for new ideas. In our marketing area, we’ve increased the number of people from 50 to 126 without increasing the size of the space. The space is designed to be a Hive Setting, which leverages proximity as a means to drive work forward. In one part of the Hive, a pair of long benches allows team members to discuss and develop ideas, and offers everyone an opportunity to work with a different mix of people each day. Tackable wall surfaces encourage the group to share the creative process with each other and with the organization at large. The team resides near other departments with which they frequently engage. This thoughtful placement facilitates communication and eases the workflow. All of these improvements have led to increased activity and engagement. Most days, all of the seats at the community benches are occupied, as employees are drawn into the office for the benefit of co-creation with colleagues. With so many people working closely and sharing ideas, the problem-solving process is happening faster and with more inspiring results. As you can see, we’ve taken a different approach to how we manage our work, the tools and technologies that enable it, and the places where we come together to do it. Employing our research and experience with customers, we’ve designed a place where our people can realize their full potential, and where visitors will get a sense for how a Living Office could improve their own experience of work. In the Hive, people can easily gather for quick conversations about projects. <
