Evidence about Social Work Outcomes from Cohort and Panel Studies

For my capstone project I wanted to analyze successful childhood interventions that build non-cognitive skills. First, I identified traits that increased the likelihood of positive outcomes. Then, I pinpointed interventions that improved those traits. I drew from over fifty studies and included only those that met stringent selection standards such as experimental study design, repeat studies among different populations and significant effect sizes. Based on my findings, I advocated increased emphasis on specific interventions in schools and communities.

This spreadsheet accompanies Professor Gamoran's February 1 lecture/webcast for the Berman Jewish Policy Archive @ NYU Wagner: Education researchers have become increasingly aware of the challenges of measuring the impact of educational practices, programs, and policies. Too often what appears to be cause and effect may actually reflect pre-existing differences between program participants and non-participants. A variety of strategies are available to surmount this challenge, but the strategies are often costly and difficult to implement. Examples from general and Jewish education will highlight the challenges, identify strategies that respond to the challenges, and suggest how the difficulties posed by these strategies may be addressed.

Effects of Parental Conflict on Adolescent Adjustment Catherine Jewell ESPY 621 Comparative Analysis The purpose of this presentation is to compare two research studies. The topic of the comparison is the effect of parental conflict on adolescent adjustment. Research includes four studies of which two will be compared. Study A – Forehand, McCombs, Long, Brody, and Fauber Conducted by: Rex Forehand, Amanda McCombs, Nicholas Long, Gene Brody, and Robert Fauber Title: Early adolescent adjustment to recent parental divorce: The role of interparental conflict and adolescent sex as mediating variables Date of study: December 30, 1987 Purpose of the study To determine if a relationship exists between parental conflict after divorce and adolescent adjustment and whether gender of the child influences the outcome. Study Summary Studied 96 adolescents aged 11 – 15 years old. Participants were equally divided between gender. Used teacher completed measures of behavior to assess: Social and social withdraw behavior. Cognitive function. Externalization of problems. Study sought to determine if parental conflict was causal to poor adolescent adjustment and if there were any differences between male and female adolescents. Study Design This study was conducted using a correlational design. Researchers conducted study to determine if relationships between high parental conflict and adolescent adjustment existed. Researchers compared several groups of adolescents from homes with intact parents, divorced parents, high conflict, and low conflict to determine relationship. No changes were made within the groups to affect an outcome. Method Original sample size: 170 Participants included: 96 adolescents equally divided by gender and their mothers Participants were recruited through notices, fliers, direct mail advertising, and local media advertising. Participants were selectively placed in eight groups of 12 students. Groups were broken down by socioeconomic status, parental marital status, parental conflict (high vs. low), and gender. Parental conflict was determined using the O’Leary-Porter Scale. High conflict was defined as means lower than 30; low conflict was defined as means higher than 30. Findings were based on surveys completed by the child, parent, and teacher and observational sessions. Method II Several survey instruments were utilized in the study: O’Leary-Porter Scale – determinant of level of parental conflict. > 30 – High conflict family < 30 – Low conflict family Married family average mean – 30 Four groups were classified low conflict – mean 34 Four groups were classified high conflict – mean 24 Teacher’s Rating Scale of Child’s Actual Competence (TRS) – assesses the teacher’s judgment of actual competence of the child. In families with excessive parental control is followed by extreme punitiveness and coldness, the adolescent child might rebel against parental standards explicitly. Self esteem can be defined as an individual’s attitude about him or herself, involving self evaluation along positive negative dimensions. The present study was conducted to find out the relationship between the authority parenting style with self esteem of adolescents. Rosenberg’s Self Esteem Scale, Parental Authority Questionnaire and Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale were used to collect data. Pearson’s product correlation and t test were used to find out the results. The correlation was found to be 0.54 and the t value was 2.70. Both the values are statistically significant, and hence it is concluded that the the self esteem is negatively correlated to authoritarian parenting styles, and adolescent females have significantly lower self esteem than their male counterparts. 1 Methodology Assignment Participant/Procedures The intended participants will include both parents and students. The parents of undergraduate students from a mid-sized university will be included in the study. The parents will consist of both fathers and mothers of students. Parents with students in elementary, junior, and high school levels will be excluded from the study. Undergraduate students who are enrolled in communication studies from a mid-sized university will also be considered as participants for the study. The students will consist of freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors. The personal demographic questions that the survey will ask the parents include education status, ethnicity, and the level of study of their children as well as their performance record in school. These questions matter because they will enable the research to deduce useful information about the individual parents and their involvement in the education of their children. For instance, the question on their level of education will assess their understanding of the purpose of the study as well as the role of parents in supporting the education initiatives of students. The question on ethnicity will enable the research to determine whether parental involvement or support to children depends on ethnicity. The students will be asked demographic questions such as their age, gender, and level of study. The specific demographic questions for the students will assist in validating the measurement scale. For instance, the level of study will determine the extent of parental support that is needed further validating the measurement scales. The question on gender will expose the difference in perception among male and female students regarding parental support and student satisfaction. Random sampling will be utilized to collect data. It involves sampling where every object has an equal chance of appearing in the study. This method will be utilized because it produces an unbiased representation of the population which will help in drawing useful conclusions about the study. It will also be utilized due to its simplicity as compared to other sampling techniques. This sampling method will significantly influence the outcomes of the results since it will ensure a higher degree of accuracy and validity.The study will adopt a cross-sectional survey design which will ensure that the researcher examines different samples of a population at a given point in time. It will allow the comparison of results/answers from different samples at one point in time. I will also utilize this survey design because it is generally short and inexpensive. They will also enable me to discover new correlations for the study that can be studied later. I intend to send the surveys to 300 parents and undergraduate students from a mid-sized university. This paper investigates the economic outcomes of education for wage earners in Pakistan and India. This is done by analysing the relationship between schooling, cognitive skills and ability on the one hand, and economic activity, occupation, sectoral choice and earnings, on the other. In the economics of education literature for South Asia, an important question remains largely unaddressed: what does the coefficient on ‘schooling’ in conventional earnings function estimates measure? While human capital theory holds that the economic return to an extra year of schooling measures productivity gains acquired through additional schooling, the credentialist view argues that it represents a return to acquired qualifications and credentials while a third, the signalling hypothesis, suggests that is captures a return to native ability. This paper seeks to adjudicate between these theories using data from unique and comparable surveys of more than 1000 households each in Pakistan and India, collected in 2007-08. The paper also examines the shape of the education-earnings relationship as a way of testing the poverty reducing potential of education in South Asia.

Returns to schooling, ability and cognitive skills in Pakistan and India

Adulthood is usually defined in terms of a series of markers: leaving school, starting a first job, leaving the parental home, forming a first union, marrying and having a first child, becoming a citizen. Such approaches draw on the idea that young people make one transition to what is locally agreed to be a clearly defined status—a destination at which one ‘arrives’. But globally, there is recognition that many of these markers are reversible and impermanent, so that there is no simple and clear notion of ‘youth’ in contrast to adulthood, and no notion of ‘arrival’ at a singular adulthood. Rather there are ‘fragile and reversible transitions’, negotiations and controls, and boundaries to cross before young men and women can take control of their lives as adults. Nevertheless, youth policy remains strongly influenced by the idea of linear transition, and the associated metaphor of individualised ‘pathways’ from school to work and adulthood. In this paper we draw on data on social and human outcomes of schooling, collected under the aegis of the RECOUP programme of research, to consider the evidence on how schooling affects the nature of young men and women’s chances of gaining, for example: livelihood and enterprise; self- protection, security and equality; and agency, resilience and autonomy as adults in the RECOUP partner countries, and the implications for education and youth policy.

One of the main outcomes of female schooling is supposed to be dramatic improvements in reproductive indicators, such as women’s access to health and family planning services, maternal morbidity and mortality, and indicators of infant and child health. Pakistan is a country where such beneficial outcomes are sorely needed: gross enrolment of girls in secondary schooling is only about 26%, the maternal mortality ratio is 320, and under-5 mortality rates are 90 for boys and 100 for girls. In these circumstances, it is imperative to understand better exactly how schooling contributes to the improvements in reproductive health, and what else might make a difference. In this paper we draw on quantitative and qualitative data collected by the RECOUP programme of research to address these questions.

Poverty has halved in Ghana over the period from 1991 to 2005. We use the household surveys to investigate possible mechanisms which led to this outcome. In particular how was it linked to the creation of jobs and skills? While in the 1990s the pattern of a growth in urban sector self-employment is clear this process was reversed in the period to 2005. By 2005/06 it had fallen to 18.6 per cent of the working age population, substantially lower than the level of the early 1990s. The fall in urban self-employment was matched by a rise in wage employment in small firms which doubled as a percentage of the workforce from 3.4 to 6.7 per cent. Over the whole period from 1991/92 to 2005/06 the most striking change in the labour force was the rise in employment in small firms, from 225,000 to 886,000. Quite contrary to the perception that wage jobs are not being created they have been expanding far faster than the growth of the labour force. We also find that over the period from 1998/99 to 2005/06 real incomes rose by in excess of 50 per cent and that this rise was fastest in the lowest paying occupation. There was some shift from lower to higher paying occupations but it would appear that the income rises, which underlie the fall in poverty, were uniformly high across all sectors and particularly benefited the unskilled. We compare how skills acquired in technical education and through apprenticeship training have impacted on the types of jobs and their earnings and thus on their role in reducing poverty.
