6. Direct Selling Beats Perils of Spinsterhood
QNET: Direct selling is a possible solution to unemployment and consequently spinsterhood in
Egypt
A pressing question these days that many of us ask is why is marriage age constantly on the rise
and "spinsterhood" is spreading so widely in Egypt? And then who is to blame for
this calamity? Perhaps the most important question we should ask is how can this
be solved?
Spinsterhood, as a phenomenon has become one of the biggest challenges in the Arab region
especially in Egypt. According to official statistics, over 8 million women above the age of 35 are
not yet married, which represents 40% of girls in their fertile period and the numbers are
increasing.
The reasons for spreading spinsterhood in Egypt are many; high costs of marriage including
dowries, housing, and furniture; the high illiteracy rate among women is only some. But experts
confirm that the high rate of unemployment is the main reason behind the spread of this
phenomenon. Young men who don’t have a secured, well-paying job that enables them to start
a new life don’t think of marriage and prefer to postpone it.
“My family has invested all their money in my education and now my salary barely covers my
personal expenses... The idea of marriage for me is a postponed dream” said a
young Egyptian guy.
7. Recently, Egypt’s economy has been in limbo and this made the problem of youth
unemployment even worse. Recent figures from the Central Agency for Public
Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) indicate that the third quarter of 2013 has
witnessed a rise in unemployment rates to 13.4% compared to 8.9 in the same quarter in 2010.
Economist Dr. Adel Amer sees that some reasons are also traditional like when some families
burden suitors with demands that they cannot afford, and this makes young men forget all
about it or postpone it until their economic status gets better - which in many cases takes years
and years.
Experts confirm that the only way out is to search for creative means and to open new channels
of employment in order to provide those young men with job opportunities that secure them a
decent income that helps them with marriage expenses .
Haldun Arin Chief Executive officer in QNet said that “Public and private sectors are increasingly
unable to provide enough jobs for millions of unemployed youth. Thus the solution is in
developing new ways for flexible work which is not confined to a certain time or place such as
direct selling in which QNET is a pioneer .The company has achieved big successes all over the
globe in the last few years, helping millions get stable incomes that enabled them to get married
and live a happy life.”
8. “Direct selling is an ingenious new means of making a living. For us it depends on marketing
high quality products and this helps a lot …the more the number of clients I reach
the higher income I get” Said one of QNET’s IRs.
QNET offers its independent representatives (IRs) free specialized training sessions in order for
them to become professionals in marketing the products, the creative solutions, and other
services provided by the company, which also in turn contributes in developing the personal
skills of the youth. The training develops the youth self-confidence and strengthens their
ambition. QNet coaches its IRs that everything is possible. The Company develops its IRs’
strategic thinking and helps them to think out of the box and find new creative solutions for
their problems, making them realize the simple dream of making a family which is one of the
issues facing Egypt’s youth.
There are thousands of Egyptian youths who succeeded in making a living and got married with
the help of their work in direct selling ; and the more effort they put to market the products the
more their incomes have increased, said Arin
Direct selling is not only for young men but it is very suitable for girls and ladies. It depends in
the first place on social networking and marketing skills and it is not confined to a certain time
or place; it can be done in the club, at the university or even at home.
9. “The recipe for success in direct selling is a high quality product that is in demand and this is the
case with QNET” Arin added.
QNET offers its customers a variety of versatile high standard products that range from water
filtration systems, educational solutions & training sessions and Swiss handmade watches to
travel packages for tourism and weekends.
Direct selling is a possible solution for solving unemployment and spinsterhood problems in
Egypt and creating the social balance. When a young man finds a good job with a stable income
he starts to think of finding a partner and beginning a new married life. Youth shouldn’t wait for
formal employment; they need to search for creative means that can secure them a job with a
decent salary.

41. QNET success in MENA spurs further expansion into Africa and Europe
42. QNET success in MENA spurs further expansion into Africa and Europe
The Managing Director of prominent Asian direct selling company, QNET, is confident of closing
the current financial year (to 31st December) on a
high, with global business being given a boost by expansion into several new countries &
territories.
During a visit to the MENA regional headquarters in Dubai recently, JR Mayer, the MD of QNET
reaffirmed that operations in the Middle East and Egypt in particular, continue to perform well.
He also announced that the company has established its East African hub in Rwanda with the
opening of QNET East Africa Ltd, as QNET prepares for business expansion in the African
continent.
“The move into Africa followed the localization and opening of a dedicated office in Ho Chi
Minh City in Vietnam, to serve one of the fastest growing new network marketing
markets in Asia. Future expansion plans include taking the business to Europe,” he added.”
“We have just completed incorporation of companies in the European Union and by early 2014
we will have a regional operation in Frankfurt and an EU headquarters based in Ireland.”

Mayer revealed that product sales in Egypt averaged approximately 15,000 transactions per
quarter in 2013. An agency office has also been recently opened in Cairo to serve as a customer
support centre and to provide after sales service.
“The MENA region currently contributes to more than 40 per cent of our global sales,

Mayer said
He added that the opening of the Dubai office in 2012 has bought a lot of brand visibility,
confidence and convenience to QNET distributors in the country as many Egyptians leaves and

training, updates on the business and pick up new products is increasing dramatically . We get
around 800 walk-in customers a month from all over the region”, he added

75. Haldun Arin Interview
1. At first, we want to know the size of "QNET” investments worldwide? And in the Egyptian
market? What is QNET’s sales volume worldwide?
QNET is a prominent Asian direct selling company founded in 1998, owned by the QI Group.
The Company is one of Asia’s leading direct selling companies and leader in MENA region,
offering a wide range of life-enhancing products through its proprietary e-commerce
platform to customers and distributors in over 100 countries in around 25 offices and agency
partnerships worldwide, and more than 50 stockists, in a number of countries. The company
is headquartered in Hong Kong and has a presence through representative offices and
agency partners in 25 countries around the world. The most recent office opened by QNET is
in Rwanda, marking its first African footprint. The Middle East region has been an important
markets for QNET’s business since its early days hence its presence in UAE since 2001. In
2009 QNET established UAE as the regional hub for MENA with an office in Abu Dhabi. A
second office was opened in Dubai in 2012. This is in addition to a Middle East Logistics hub
in Musafah Industrial city. Today, UAE serves as our regional headquarters for the MENA
region serving approximately 2 million Independent Representatives. MENA region currently
contributes to more than 40 percent of QNET’s global sales, demonstrating the popularity of
its products and the method of direct selling in this region. QNET product sales transactions
are averaging over 10,000 per month in the Middle East and North Africa region as a whole.
In 2013 in Egypt, QNET averaged approximately 10,000 product sales per quarter
76. 2. What are the markets where QNET is currently operating in? What are the target markets in
the upcoming period?
Being an e-commerce company, QNET offers products and services to customers in most
countries around the world. At the moment, we ship products to around 100 countries
worldwide, primarily in South East Asia, Mena region and Central Asia. We are now exploring
Europe and are in the process of setting up our first EU office in Germany.
3. Does QNET operate in other Arabian Markets other than Egypt?
UAE serves as the regional hub for the entire Middle East and North Africa region and we have
2 offices and a logistics centre there. Additionally, we also have a local presence in certain
countries through agency partnerships for customer service and after sales support in several
countries including Egypt, Morocco, Lebanon and Bahrain.
4. What are your expansion plans over the coming years?
In Egypt, QNET recently launched its very first Egyptian product “Bel & Belle” a personal care
range of products through an Alexandria based manufacturer as part of its ‘Merchant Program’
that provides a global platform for local small and medium businesses to reach a global
audience through QNet’s ecommerce store. Also product sales in Egypt averaged
approximately 15,000 transactions per quarter in 2013. An agency office has also been
recently opened in Cairo to serve as a customer support centre and to provide after sales
service.
77. 5. What is your strategy for 2014?
We are definitely looking to expend our sales in Egypt and launch more products matching the
Egyptian citizens life style. Egypt is one of our most potential markets in ME and we’ll always
be present to further support its economy
6. What are the obstacles and challenges facing QNET in the Egyptian market?
QNET is concerned about the mushrooming of dubious and fraudulent schemes operating
under the garb of direct selling or multi-level marketing opportunities in Egypt. Policy
interventions can provide a conducive and sustainable operating environment for genuine
direct selling companies. The need of the hour is legislation. A clear legislation helps keep in
check fly by night operators. The potential of the direct selling business to generate
employment, especially for women, and its positive socioeconomic impact provides a case to
encourage direct selling. Hence, I would urge the authorities to address these gaps and create
a regulatory framework for the industry to flourish.
78. 7. What's your vision of the Egyptian economy over the coming period? Do you think
it will be better or worse?
2013 has been an eventful year for Egypt. While the World Bank is predicting weak
economic growth and reports 13 percent unemployment, QNET remains firm in its
resolve to stand by its distributors in Egypt. In 2012, Egypt played a very important
role in strengthening our presence in the MENA region and while political events
have impacted our sales in Egypt in 2013, we are looking forward to a brand new
chapter in 2014. We have started sourcing products from local manufacturers and
have opened an agency office to provide customer support. We will continue to make
improvements and expand our presence. We are committed to fulfilling our promise
of contributing to the Egyptian economy.
79. 8. What's your expectation for the movement of investments coming into Egypt in light
of the current situation in the country?
The investors in Egypt must not exaggerate in size of risks as all countries have gone
through stressful periods even more than Egypt, but their markets are still operating
and their economies are growing. All signs confirm that Egypt’s economy will rebound.
QNET is confident that the economy will recover and we are doing our bit to support
local manufacturers through our initiative called ‘Merchant Program’. We are also
looking at sourcing more Egyptian products that we can take to our global customer
base. Also, we are supporting the tourism industry by heavily promoting holiday
packages in Egypt to both domestic and international travellers. Egypt is a major,
influential country, and things can’t get worse than present. There is no doubt that the
tasks ahead will be difficult, but there is no other option but to face them.
80. 9. In your opinion how to overcome the challenges facing Egypt? And what are
the urgent reforms required from the Egyptian government, which will return the
flow of foreign investments again? And What about the economic and financial
legislation needed?
Security is an important criteria for any foreign investor. Protests and acts of
violence on the streets disrupting daily life does cause a level of fear among
foreigners. Stability of the situation would lead to the stability of the market and
then the flow of domestic and foreign investment. The Egyptian government
needs to provide the required guarantees to protect the rights of investors.
Exports should be increased and infrastructure for tourism industry improved.
People still need infrastructure, healthcare and education. Therefore, investment
opportunities are plentiful. For our industry specifically, we have requested for
specific legislation to govern the direct selling industry, which can help protect
genuine companies and also consumers. This will also keep unscrupulous
operators in check.
