Cleaning and caring for your jewelry at home
1. Cleaning and Caring For Your Jewelry at Home
A quick search on the internet and you'll end up getting hundreds of different methods of cleaning your
jewelry. Toothpaste for sparking diamond, beer for shiny gold and surprisingly ketchup for polished
silver - these are some of the clever tricks you’d want to include in the list.
These easy jewelry cleaning hacks are spare you an extra time for your personal space. Let's have a
closer look on how to care for your jewelry at home.
Gold
Always be gentle while removing dust from your gold jewelry with a soft cotton rag. You can also soak
gold jewelry in a few drops of mild dish washing detergent and warm water solution for two to three
minutes. While ammonia is termed to be quite effective when it comes to cleaning, you may want to be
careful and use it sparingly - one part ammonia to six parts water is recommended. If the facets and the
grooves have been built up by dirt and is difficult to get out, try using a soft toothbrush to clean the
surface and rinse with a trickle warm water and dry using a softy cloth.
Diamonds
Diamonds, the hardest of all minerals require regular care and cleaning to maintain their luster. The
clarity of a diamond relies on the amount of light entering the stone and reflecting back to the human
eye. Even the smallest amount of oil or grease can dull its reflection. You may dip the diamond jewelry
in a warm solution of water, with a few drops of mild detergent for three to five minutes. You can also
try cleaning the diamond using a soft toothbrush. The stone can be buffed with a dry soft cloth after
rinsing. It's suggested that ammonia solutions, although good at cleaning diamonds, must be used with
caution as they can remove the color from most metals.
Pearls
Do you want to keep your pearl necklace or bracelet clean? Yes? Wear them frequently as the oils from
your skin help maintain their luster. However, if you don't/can't wear them often you can still keep them
in good condition. A soft cloth dotted with olive oil can be used to wipe your pearls, or just a dry cloth to
polish them. It's advisable that you inspect your pearl jewelry, ensure the pearls are secure on the string
and use a warm solution of soapy water with a small amount of gentle baby sops to clean them. Make
sure you put the pearls in the solution for only a minute to avoid loosening of the stones from the
setting, and then rub them dry with a soft cotton cloth.
Silver
Get a glass bowl and line the bottom with aluminum foil. Now boil water and add two tablespoons of
baking soda and a tablespoon of salt, followed by thoroughly mixing the solution and emptying into the
glass bowl. Place your silver jewelry into the bowl and wait until the water has cooled off and finally
rinse with water and polish using a soft rag. You don't even to make an extra effort of getting inside the
crevices and creases of your jewelry - the cleaning solution is that potent and effective.
2. Gemstones
If your jewelry comprises of gemstones, you can clean them using a solution of warm soapy water.
However, do avoid soaking porous gemstones and instead use a wet cotton cloth to clean the stone.
Your jewelry deserves to shine, and with these simple tricks, you can never go wrong.
