The Welcoming Ceremony will focus on Traditional
Festivals. So, be prepared for a small presentation
(5-7 min) on a traditional festival of your town or
country.
During morning sessions, all students will be
involved in creative activities. Therefore, we would
like you to ask them in which activity each would
prefer to take part:
1) Graffiti – only one student from each team will
participate. He/She has to bring a draft with him/her on
the subject «be smart, be safe»
2) Theatrical game
3) Dancing lesson
4) Sports
Our main task in Cyprus will be the publishing of
everything that we have dealt with during this year.
For this reason it is obvious that you have to bring
with you ( on a USB) any texts or photos on the
following subjects
1) The trip to Croatia
2) The trip to Sweden
3) The day of safety on the Internet
4) Activities with the parents’ or the community
engagement
5) Forwarding the programme to mass media
Summer is a reality here in Cyprus! Don’t forget to
bring light clothes, walking shoes, and certainly your
swimsuits!

Nicosia Downtown Tour
Famagusta Gate, the most significant of the gates of Venetian Lefkosia
(Nicosia), opened onto the road that led to the most important harbour town
of the island, hence its name. It was originally known as ‘Porta Giuliana’ in
honour of Giulio Savorgnano, the engineer who designed and erected the
Venetian walls. The gate has an impressive façade and consists of a large
vaulted passage with a large domed room in the middle, 10.97 metres in
diameter. On either side of the passage are oblong rooms for the guards.
Liberty Monument was erected in 1970 and represents the Greek Cypriots'
liberation from the British Colonial Rule. Two heroes are opening the prison
gates to release 14 citizens.
Archbishop's Palace a religious, national and political monument, the Old
Archbishop’s Palace is an 18th century two - storey building in the heart of
Lefkosia (Nicosia) that is closely associated with modern Cypriot history. Next
to it is the new Archbishop’s Palace, a two - storey stone building in Neo -
Byzantine style housing the offices of the archdiocese and the residence of the
archbishop. It was built by Archbishop Makarios III between 1956 and 1960 and
also houses the Byzantine Museum and the Library of the Archbishopric. Since
the completion of the new Archbishopric, the Old Archbishop’s Palace has housed the Folk Art
Museum and the National Struggle Museum.
Omeriye Mosque is located near the main Municipal Market within the walled
city of Lefkosia (Nicosia). The door of the main entrance belongs to the
original 14th century building. This consists of a nave (41x11 metres) and was
initially covered with cross vaults. The church would have initially been about
15 metres high, making it the most imposing building of medieval Lefkosia
after Agia Sofia. The architecture of the building is generally simple, with
heavy exterior facades and buttresses. The vaulted entrance preserves
appreciable sculptural decoration. Remains of a later, Renaissance addition to the building can
be seen on the northeast. The roof and superstructure, roughly to the height of the windows,
was destroyed by Ottoman cannonades during the siege of Lefkosia (Nicosia) in 1570. After the
city fell, the Ottomans rebuilt the walls, added a wooden roof, plastered the interior and added
a minaret. Mustapha Pasha converted the building into a mosque in 1571. The name of the
mosque is associated with the 7th century prophet Omer who, legend has it, visited Lefkosia on
his way to Egypt, and spent the night in the porch of the ruined church.
(bs)2/ Meeting in Cyprus Page 11
Faneromeni Church dates from 1300 AD and was rebuilt in 1872/3. The
name, which means ‘that which is revealed’ is related to a Legend based on
which the icon of Panagia (Virgin Mary) had been stolen during some
renovations and was then revealed itself following a vision. During the
Ottoman period, the Turks tried to transform the church into a Mosque. It is
said that this was unsuccessful in the end because all people who were
appointed mysteriously died after they were appointed. It used to be the
largest church in Lefkosia (Nicosia). The marble mausoleum to the east of the church contains
the relics of the bishops and priests executed by the Ottomans in 1821.
Laiki Geitonia is a traditional neighbourhood inside the city walls. Houses
have been restored to remind the traditional, old Nicosia. It is a
pedestrianised area with buildings date from the 18the century and a
combination of residential houses, art shops and tavernas.
Ledra Street is the main shopping street in South Nicosia and symbolizes the
division between the North and South Nicosia. Traditionally, Ledra Street was
the main shopping street of the capital, although in recent years it has been
superseded by more accessible streets further out from the centre.
Properties on the street are largely for commercial use and command some
of the highest real estate prices on the island. The street leads off Eleftheria
square, runs in a South to North direction and is about 1 km long. Most of it lies within the area
effectively controlled by the Republic of Cyprus while a short stretch at the northern end
between the UN buffer zone and the intersection with Arasta Street and Girne Caddesı falls
within the Turkish occupied part of Nicosia.
Onasagorou Street is a major shopping street in central Nicosia that runs
from Eleftheria square to Faneromeni School. It has been a fashionable
shopping street since the 19th century and is currently the home of many
high-priced fashion shops. Onasagorou Street is 0.3km long. Onasagorou
Street was the location of the richest Cypriot houses during 19th and early
20th century. During the late 20th century the street became abandoned due
to the prosperity of Ledra Street which was becoming more popular, and
hosting more businesses.

Excursion to Troodos Mountains
Church of Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis (St. Nicholas of the Roof),
Kakopetria, is situated in a central area of the Troodos mountain range,
in the upper Solea valley. It is built on the west bank of the river
Klarios/Karkotis, at a distance of about two kilometers southwest of the
village of Kakopetria. In 1985 it was inscribed on the UNESCO World
Heritage List which includes nine other painted Byzantine churches of the
Troodos range. The church of Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis "Saint Nicholas of
the Roof" near the village of Kakopetria belonged to a monastery. It is completely painted with
murals dating from the11th to the 17th centuries and is considered one of the most interesting
Byzantine churches on the island. The church took its name from the steep, pitched timber roof
that was built to protect it from the weather.
Platania picnic site, a few kilometres north of the village of Kakopetria,
is a popular site in Cyprus. It is a peaceful place where you can have a
rest or a stroll under the beautiful plane trees. Facilities include picnic
tables, a restaurant and children’s play areas.
Kakopetria The beautiful green village of Kakopetria constitutes one of
the most favourable destinations of both Cypriot and foreign visitors.
Kakopetria is built on the foothills of the Troodos mountain region and is
approximately 55 kilometres away from the capital city. It stands at an
altitude of 667 metres and it is the highest village in the Solea Valley.
The community has about 1,200 permanent inhabitants and a couple
hundred more who either have a summer house or are originally from
kakopetria but work in Nicosia. It is surrounded by thick forestland and is
built on the banks of the Kargotis and Garillis Rivers. The two rivers join within village itself and
form the river Klarios, which crosses the Solea Valley and empties into Morphou Bay. It is a
village which will charm you with its numerous sights and magical scenery. In the Old part of
Kakopetria one can see the popular architecture houses, the cobblestone alleys and the Museums
of the village. Furthermore, it is worth spending time enjoying the forest of Kakopetria by
following one of its Nature Trails, as well admiring some more of its sights such as the old water
mills and the ‘Married Couple’s Rock’.

Excursion to Limassol
Choirokoitia Neolithic Settlement. The ancient site of Choirokoitia dates
back to the 6th millennium BC. It lies in the domain of the village from
which it takes its name in the Larnaka (Larnaca) district on the west bank
of the Maroni River overlooking the south coast, 6 kilometres from the
sea. Included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list since 1988,
Choirokoitia is one of the best preserved settlements of this period in
Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean. The settlement’s only entrance – a stairway integrated
within a stone massif that lay against the exterior face of the settlement’s enclosure wall, can
be traced for more than 180 metres. Perfectly functional as an entrance and exit, this stairway
provided a solution to the problem posed by the fact that the settlement stood 2 metres higher
than the surrounding area. Protected by this wall, the houses were crowded together, separated
only by narrow strips of land that were used as passage ways and for the disposal of rubbish.
Each house consisted of a compound of several buildings with a circular ground plan, grouped
around an open space, a kind of small inner courtyard. The dead were buried in pits inside the
housing units. No cult place was found in the village, the population of which is estimated at
some 300 inhabitants.
Kourion Archaeological Site One of the most spectacular archaeological
sites on the island, Kourion was an important city kingdom where
excavations continue to reveal impressive new treasures. Noted
particularly for its magnificent Greco - Roman Theatre, Kourion is also
proud home to stately villas with exquisite mosaic floors and an early
Christian Basilica among other treasures. Originally built in the 2nd
century B.C., Kourion’s awe - inspiring theatre is now fully restored and used for musical and
theatrical performances. The House of Eustolios, consisting of a complex of baths and a number
of rooms with superb 5th century A.D. mosaic floors, was once a private Roman villa before it
became a public recreation centre during the Early Christian period. The Early Christian Basilica
dates to the 5th century and was probably the Cathedral of Kourion, with a baptistery attached
to the north face. The House of Achilles and the House of the Gladiators also have beautiful
mosaic floors. The Nymphaeum, dedicated to the water nymphs, is an elegant Roman structure.
The 2nd century A.D. stadium is located outside the main Kourion site, about 1kilometre to the
west on the right hand side of the road to Pafos.
Limassol The Promenade in Limassol became a huge hit with
holidaymakers for its great view of the sea, beaches and the palm
fringed surroundings, with a backdrop of a long and slender sea shore
and cooling water parks it creates a delightful atmosphere for adults
and children alike. The bustling streets flanking the seaside trail has a
unique appeal of it's own, it’s packed with cafes, restaurants, trendy
English style pubs, vibrant nightclubs and a wide range of shops selling almost everything from
souvenirs to the latest trends.

  • 8. Page 8 (bs)2/ Meeting in Cyprus The Welcoming Ceremony will focus on Traditional Festivals. So, be prepared for a small presentation (5-7 min) on a traditional festival of your town or country. During morning sessions, all students will be involved in creative activities. Therefore, we would like you to ask them in which activity each would prefer to take part: 1) Graffiti – only one student from each team will participate. He/She has to bring a draft with him/her on the subject «be smart, be safe» 2) Theatrical game 3) Dancing lesson 4) Sports Our main task in Cyprus will be the publishing of everything that we have dealt with during this year. For this reason it is obvious that you have to bring with you ( on a USB) any texts or photos on the following subjects 1) The trip to Croatia 2) The trip to Sweden 3) The day of safety on the Internet 4) Activities with the parents’ or the community engagement 5) Forwarding the programme to mass media Summer is a reality here in Cyprus! Don’t forget to bring light clothes, walking shoes, and certainly your swimsuits! TRADITIONAL FESTIVALS Meeting in Cyprus

  • 10. Page 10 (bs)2/ Meeting in Cyprus Nicosia Downtown Tour Famagusta Gate, the most significant of the gates of Venetian Lefkosia (Nicosia), opened onto the road that led to the most important harbour town of the island, hence its name. It was originally known as ‘Porta Giuliana’ in honour of Giulio Savorgnano, the engineer who designed and erected the Venetian walls. The gate has an impressive façade and consists of a large vaulted passage with a large domed room in the middle, 10.97 metres in diameter. On either side of the passage are oblong rooms for the guards. Liberty Monument was erected in 1970 and represents the Greek Cypriots' liberation from the British Colonial Rule. Two heroes are opening the prison gates to release 14 citizens. Archbishop's Palace a religious, national and political monument, the Old Archbishop’s Palace is an 18th century two - storey building in the heart of Lefkosia (Nicosia) that is closely associated with modern Cypriot history. Next to it is the new Archbishop’s Palace, a two - storey stone building in Neo - Byzantine style housing the offices of the archdiocese and the residence of the archbishop. It was built by Archbishop Makarios III between 1956 and 1960 and also houses the Byzantine Museum and the Library of the Archbishopric. Since the completion of the new Archbishopric, the Old Archbishop’s Palace has housed the Folk Art Museum and the National Struggle Museum. Omeriye Mosque is located near the main Municipal Market within the walled city of Lefkosia (Nicosia). The door of the main entrance belongs to the original 14th century building. This consists of a nave (41x11 metres) and was initially covered with cross vaults. The church would have initially been about 15 metres high, making it the most imposing building of medieval Lefkosia after Agia Sofia. The architecture of the building is generally simple, with heavy exterior facades and buttresses. The vaulted entrance preserves appreciable sculptural decoration. Remains of a later, Renaissance addition to the building can be seen on the northeast. The roof and superstructure, roughly to the height of the windows, was destroyed by Ottoman cannonades during the siege of Lefkosia (Nicosia) in 1570. After the city fell, the Ottomans rebuilt the walls, added a wooden roof, plastered the interior and added a minaret. Mustapha Pasha converted the building into a mosque in 1571. The name of the mosque is associated with the 7th century prophet Omer who, legend has it, visited Lefkosia on his way to Egypt, and spent the night in the porch of the ruined church.
  • 11. (bs)2/ Meeting in Cyprus Page 11 Faneromeni Church dates from 1300 AD and was rebuilt in 1872/3. The name, which means ‘that which is revealed’ is related to a Legend based on which the icon of Panagia (Virgin Mary) had been stolen during some renovations and was then revealed itself following a vision. During the Ottoman period, the Turks tried to transform the church into a Mosque. It is said that this was unsuccessful in the end because all people who were appointed mysteriously died after they were appointed. It used to be the largest church in Lefkosia (Nicosia). The marble mausoleum to the east of the church contains the relics of the bishops and priests executed by the Ottomans in 1821. Laiki Geitonia is a traditional neighbourhood inside the city walls. Houses have been restored to remind the traditional, old Nicosia. It is a pedestrianised area with buildings date from the 18the century and a combination of residential houses, art shops and tavernas. Ledra Street is the main shopping street in South Nicosia and symbolizes the division between the North and South Nicosia. Traditionally, Ledra Street was the main shopping street of the capital, although in recent years it has been superseded by more accessible streets further out from the centre. Properties on the street are largely for commercial use and command some of the highest real estate prices on the island. The street leads off Eleftheria square, runs in a South to North direction and is about 1 km long. Most of it lies within the area effectively controlled by the Republic of Cyprus while a short stretch at the northern end between the UN buffer zone and the intersection with Arasta Street and Girne Caddesı falls within the Turkish occupied part of Nicosia. Onasagorou Street is a major shopping street in central Nicosia that runs from Eleftheria square to Faneromeni School. It has been a fashionable shopping street since the 19th century and is currently the home of many high-priced fashion shops. Onasagorou Street is 0.3km long. Onasagorou Street was the location of the richest Cypriot houses during 19th and early 20th century. During the late 20th century the street became abandoned due to the prosperity of Ledra Street which was becoming more popular, and hosting more businesses.
  • 12. Page 12 (bs)2/ Meeting in Cyprus Excursion to Troodos Mountains Church of Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis (St. Nicholas of the Roof), Kakopetria, is situated in a central area of the Troodos mountain range, in the upper Solea valley. It is built on the west bank of the river Klarios/Karkotis, at a distance of about two kilometers southwest of the village of Kakopetria. In 1985 it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List which includes nine other painted Byzantine churches of the Troodos range. The church of Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis "Saint Nicholas of the Roof" near the village of Kakopetria belonged to a monastery. It is completely painted with murals dating from the11th to the 17th centuries and is considered one of the most interesting Byzantine churches on the island. The church took its name from the steep, pitched timber roof that was built to protect it from the weather. Platania picnic site, a few kilometres north of the village of Kakopetria, is a popular site in Cyprus. It is a peaceful place where you can have a rest or a stroll under the beautiful plane trees. Facilities include picnic tables, a restaurant and children’s play areas. Kakopetria The beautiful green village of Kakopetria constitutes one of the most favourable destinations of both Cypriot and foreign visitors. Kakopetria is built on the foothills of the Troodos mountain region and is approximately 55 kilometres away from the capital city. It stands at an altitude of 667 metres and it is the highest village in the Solea Valley. The community has about 1,200 permanent inhabitants and a couple hundred more who either have a summer house or are originally from kakopetria but work in Nicosia. It is surrounded by thick forestland and is built on the banks of the Kargotis and Garillis Rivers. The two rivers join within village itself and form the river Klarios, which crosses the Solea Valley and empties into Morphou Bay. It is a village which will charm you with its numerous sights and magical scenery. In the Old part of Kakopetria one can see the popular architecture houses, the cobblestone alleys and the Museums of the village. Furthermore, it is worth spending time enjoying the forest of Kakopetria by following one of its Nature Trails, as well admiring some more of its sights such as the old water mills and the ‘Married Couple’s Rock’.
  • 13. (bs)2/ Meeting in Cyprus Page 13 Excursion to Limassol Choirokoitia Neolithic Settlement. The ancient site of Choirokoitia dates back to the 6th millennium BC. It lies in the domain of the village from which it takes its name in the Larnaka (Larnaca) district on the west bank of the Maroni River overlooking the south coast, 6 kilometres from the sea. Included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list since 1988, Choirokoitia is one of the best preserved settlements of this period in Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean. The settlement’s only entrance – a stairway integrated within a stone massif that lay against the exterior face of the settlement’s enclosure wall, can be traced for more than 180 metres. Perfectly functional as an entrance and exit, this stairway provided a solution to the problem posed by the fact that the settlement stood 2 metres higher than the surrounding area. Protected by this wall, the houses were crowded together, separated only by narrow strips of land that were used as passage ways and for the disposal of rubbish. Each house consisted of a compound of several buildings with a circular ground plan, grouped around an open space, a kind of small inner courtyard. The dead were buried in pits inside the housing units. No cult place was found in the village, the population of which is estimated at some 300 inhabitants. Kourion Archaeological Site One of the most spectacular archaeological sites on the island, Kourion was an important city kingdom where excavations continue to reveal impressive new treasures. Noted particularly for its magnificent Greco - Roman Theatre, Kourion is also proud home to stately villas with exquisite mosaic floors and an early Christian Basilica among other treasures. Originally built in the 2nd century B.C., Kourion’s awe - inspiring theatre is now fully restored and used for musical and theatrical performances. The House of Eustolios, consisting of a complex of baths and a number of rooms with superb 5th century A.D. mosaic floors, was once a private Roman villa before it became a public recreation centre during the Early Christian period. The Early Christian Basilica dates to the 5th century and was probably the Cathedral of Kourion, with a baptistery attached to the north face. The House of Achilles and the House of the Gladiators also have beautiful mosaic floors. The Nymphaeum, dedicated to the water nymphs, is an elegant Roman structure. The 2nd century A.D. stadium is located outside the main Kourion site, about 1kilometre to the west on the right hand side of the road to Pafos. Limassol The Promenade in Limassol became a huge hit with holidaymakers for its great view of the sea, beaches and the palm fringed surroundings, with a backdrop of a long and slender sea shore and cooling water parks it creates a delightful atmosphere for adults and children alike. The bustling streets flanking the seaside trail has a unique appeal of it's own, it’s packed with cafes, restaurants, trendy English style pubs, vibrant nightclubs and a wide range of shops selling almost everything from souvenirs to the latest trends.
