2. What’s New?
WHAT IS THE TD SUMMER READING CLUB FOR KIDS?
It’s a free national program just for kids that runs at the Pickering Public Library every year. This year the
theme is Imagine! Kids who register will receive a free poster, activity book and an Imagine! Recording
Booklet! Visit the Library once a week with your Imagine! Recording Booklet to tell us about what you have
been reading and receive a sticker with a secret code. There are nine stickers to collect, and the secret
codes will unlock reading rewards on the TD Summer Reading Club website www.tdsummerreadingclub.ca.
See if you can collect them all!

WHY should I join the club?
Because it’s going to be SO MUCH FUN! There will be cool programs, games
and activities, and lots of other neat things to see, read and do. By visiting
once a week you will be entered in a weekly draw to win prizes like books and
games AND if you visit every week in the summer you will be entered to win a Play Station Vita!

Besides the nine stickers to collect, you will be able to earn

reviews, attending programs and other fun stuff! You will

TEENS - GET LIBRARY BOOK BUCKS FOR THE
END OF SEASON AUCTION!
Teens can write reviews and earn Library Book Bucks to use
at the end of season auction. Bid on items such as a Play Station Vita as well as an itouch and Chapters
Gift Cards. Join the Summer Reading Club, write your review on and earn $5 in Library Book
Bucks. The more you review, the more you earn. At the end of the summer, use your Library Book Bucks
to bid at the Summer Reading Club Auction. There will also be weekly draws to win books and you will
receive a voucher to clear up any of those annoying, outstanding fees! See page 15 for more details.

5. KINDERGARTEN AND BEYOND! (3 TO 5 YEARS)
This hands-on, six week program, is designed for Parents/Caregivers and their children to learn im-
portant early literacy skills that will help children to succeed in school. Parents/Caregivers will learn fun
activities they can do at home with their child to continue the early literacy learning. Parent/Caregiver
participation is required. Children must be between the ages of 3 and 5 upon registering. Younger
siblings are not allowed to attend. Registration is required and starts Friday, June 22nd at 9:30 a.m.

6. IMAGINE! SUMMER READING KICK OFF
Join us outside behind the Library to celebrate the start of our Summer Reading Clubs! This year’s
theme is fantasy. Stations will be set up for families to play games, make crafts, hear stories, get their
faces painted and register for the reading clubs. Visit each station to complete the scavenger hunt and
receive a prize! In the case of inclement weather we will be inside the Library.

the original version of the tale The Fisherman and His Wife. You will also learn basic storytelling skills
with Heather and make a home made drum during this workshop. How would you use your drum to

To wrap up the summer reading clubs join us for an epic quest out behind the library. Families will re-
ceive clues that will lead them to different library staff dressed up as fantasy characters. Each char-
acter will have a challenge for the families to complete before giving them their next clue. Complete the

TEEN SUMMER READING CLUB 2011
Why not turn your summer reading into cash and prizes? You will have a chance to win books in our

MOVING- THE FIRST STEP
With humour and compassion, Kathy Zaremba, owner of Felicity-So much more than moving, provides
information to seniors on the first step of moving: thinking about moving in the future and figuring out
where to start. Knowing we all move at some point, Kathy suggests how moving can be a positive ex-
perience instead of a scary proposition and offers some tools to get you started. Kathy’s presentation
provides some thought provoking discussions to have with yourself, spouse, family members or friends.

GEOCACHING 101
Do you own a smartphone with GPS capabilities? If so, then you already have a tool you can use for
geocaching. Geocaching is an outdoor treasure hunting game where players try to locate hidden con-
tainers, called geocaches, using GPS-enabled devices and then share their experiences online. Ken
Spence and Chris McDonnell, active geocachers in the Durham Region, will explain the basics of the
game and why it is a great activity for all to participate in.
