Take 1 molecule moving with velocity v Time between collisions with wall = Distance/Speed = 2a/v Therefore collisions per second = v/2a v
Forces and Momentum ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],Momentum Before = mv Momentum after = - mv Change in Momentum of Wall and molecule 2 mv
Rate of Change of Momentum ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object]
Pressure = Force / Area = (mv 2 /a) / bc = mv 2 /abc = mv 2 /Volume But in a gas, there are not 1 but N molecules… v
Pressure = Nmv 2 /Volume But they move in all 3 dimensions, not just 1… So, on average only a 1/3 as many collisions will occur… v
Pressure = 1/3 Nmv 2 /Volume So PV = 1/3Nmv 2 But the speed of each molecule is different… We use Root Mean Square..! v
