2. • Matthew, Mark and Luke are called synoptic
Gospels because their accounts of the life, miracles
and teachings of Jesus are similar in content with
exception to variation in details and absence of
certain events that are unique to each book.
• These apparent distinctions complement the full
witness of Jesus Christ.
Synoptic Gospels
3. Of the four Gospels, John is unique. John’s gospel
account of Jesus’ life and teachings is completely
different in content from the synoptic books.
• The Gospel of John is more theologically focused on
Christ’s deity and faith for our salvation.
• Though the other books present the deity of Jesus
Christ, John with inspired wisdom declares and
shows its relevance to Christian faith and doctrine.
• The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ has a
greater meaning because of who Jesus is.
• Finally, John’s gospel underscores the importance of
God in Christ presented also in the other gospels
and completes the full testimony of Jesus Christ and
the Gospel. Without John’s witness, we have an
incomplete testimony.
Gospel of John
4. Old Testament scriptures support the theme of
each gospel author.
• Matthew presents Jesus as the King of Israel
(Isa 9:6-7).
• Mark presents Jesus as the Servant of Jehovah
(Isa. 42:1-8).
• Luke presents Jesus as the Son of Man
(Dan 7:13-14).
• John presents Jesus as the Son of God
(Ps 2).
