Mrs. Donati's reading class covered many novels and short stories throughout the year including Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, A Tale of Two Cities, and My Brother Sam Is Dead. When studying short stories, the class focused on elements like plot, character, setting, point of view, tone, and theme. As an example, when reading The Dinner Party the class studied plot, and when reading A Nincompoop and Charles they examined theme and character respectively. The Raven provided a challenge as it required understanding of all story elements.
