3. INTRODUCTION
ï What causes Volcanos? OR How does it
occurs?
ï Volcanic activity frequently occurs at the
boundaries of the Earth's tectonic plates
which are a series of large blocks moving
between each other. The movement of these
plates plays a significant role in the type of
volcano formed, which influences its shape.

5. TYPES OF VOLCANIC
ERUPTIONSï The most common type of volcanic eruption occurs
when magma (the term for lava when it is below the
Earth's surface) is released from a volcanic vent.
ï Eruptions can be effusive, where lava flows like a
thick, sticky liquid, or explosive, where fragmented
lava explodes out of a vent.
ï In explosive eruptions, the fragmented rock may
be accompanied by ash and gases; in effusive
eruptions, degassing is common but ash is usually

9. AMAZING FACT
ï Some famous volcanic eruptions of modern
times include Mount Krakatoa in 1883,
Novarupta in 1912, Mount St Helens in 1980
and Mt Pinatubo in 1991.
ï While we certainly have some big volcanoes
here on Earth, the biggest known volcano in our
solar system is actually on Mars. Its name is
Olympus Mons and it measures a whooping
600km (373 miles) wide and 21km (13 miles)
high.
