What is “El Encierro”?

“El Encierro” is what
is referred to as the
Running of the
Bulls in English.

It occurs during the
annual festival called
San Fermin in
Pamplona, Spain.

What is the purpose?

What is the purpose?
•  El Encierro has been
occurring since 1592
•  In the 1800s
daredevils started
joining the heard to
run

• The purpose of the
run is to transport six
bulls and six steer
from the corrals to the
Plaza de Toros (The
Bullring) so they can
ﬁght with the
matadors that evening

•  Everyday between
July 7th and 14th
•  Each day it starts at
8AM when the ﬁrst
rocket goes off
•  The whole process
lasts from
7AM-8:30AM

When does El Encierro occur?

A series of three rockets
go off:
•  The ﬁrst rocket goes off at
8:00 AM signiﬁes that the
door of the corrals of
Santo Domingo is open
•  The second rocket goes off
when the bulls are on the
street
•  The third rockets goes off
when all the bulls are in
the Plaza de Toros (the
Bullring)

I know if I  
choose to run?

Remember
•  If you choose to run you will have to
consider your physical and emotional
condition. It will demand lot of agility and
concentration to not be hit by one of the
bulls and get hurt.
•  NOTE: You must be 18-years-old or older to
run. You are responsible for yourself and if
you get hurt we are not liable.

What advice would you give 
someone who wants to run?
•  It is recommended to watch El Encierro
from a balcony prior to running to
familiarize yourself with the route and
choose in which area you would like to
start to run – the front or the back.
•  You will not be able run the whole route
so be sure choose where you will start
wisely.

•  There are three places you can watch El
Encierro:

From a balcony along the route
From the Plaza de Toros
(The Bullring)
From the barricade along the route

•  If you want to watch
from the barricade
make sure you arrive
early to ﬁnd a spot.
•  Suggested times of
arrival:
–  5AM on the
weekends
–  6AM during the
week

•  You will have to watch
from the second barrier
because paramedics
and police will be at the
ﬁrst barrier
What
should 
I know if
watch  
from the
barricade?
•  You will not be able to
touch the bulls
•  You will not be able to
run after the bulls

Watch from the 
Plaza De Toros (The Bullring)
•  Watching from the
Plaza de Toros is
cheap but make
sure you buy your
tickets early. What
you’ll see at the
Plaza de Toros will
be the very last part
of El Encierro.

Watching from Balcony is a great way to enjoy El Encierro
because you will be safely above the bulls and not in front
nor behind them.

Location
•  Location is key because you want to make sure
you’re able to see and enjoy everything that
most intrigues you during the run. You may
prefer to be where the run starts or could be
Dead Man’s Corner. It depends on your
preference.

What should I consider when  
reserving a balcony space? 

Location is important because you can
only see certain areas of the run from
certain locations.

Level is important because it depends on
how much you of the run you want to see
verse how close you want to be to the
actual run.

NOTE: “Level 1” in Europe is what is
considered “Level 2” in the USA.

What can you expect  
of our balconies?
•  Someone from our team will be waiting for you at
the door of the building to greet you before you
enter to into the apartment where the balcony is
located. They’ll also answer questions you may
have.
