2. Sony launches world's first tilting television
Electronic giant Sony has unveiled what is billed as the world's first
tilting screen .
The "Monolithic" screens, which start at 1,300 pounds for a 40-inch
screen and are available in state-of-the art 3D models, can either be set
up vertically or slotted to a six-degree backwards lean.
It's exactly the same as sitting in front of a laptop - we tilt the screen back
so you can see it properly
Sony researchers say a six degree lean is the ideal angle - any less doesn't
make much of a discernible difference, and any more could lead to
reflections from ceiling lights getting in the way.
The range of tilting screens runs to a 55in model priced at 3,000 pounds.
3. Housing scam: CBI arrests top officials of PSU banks,
financial institutions
The Central Bureau of India (CBI) on Wednesday arrested top officials
from some leading PSU banks and public/private financial institutions.
The CBI said that the officers of Bank of India, Central bank of India,
Punjab National bank and LIC HF were receiving illegal gratification for
facilitating loans.
Executives at Money Matters were arrested for broking bribery deals .
Five separate cases have been registered and investigations are on, the
leading investigation agency said in a press conference. It hasn't put up a
figure to the size of the scam.
4. Ford plans second plant in India, Gujarat on radar
With the Indian car market booming, Ford is planning to set up a
second plant and has approached the Gujarat government for land.
According to sources, Ford which has announced eight new
models for India by 2015, has been suggested a site near Sanand,
where Tata Motors also has its factory for Nano, by Gujarat state
government officials.
Ford has been riding high after the success of its Figo hatchback
and wants to ramp up quickly to drive in new models and keep the
momentum going. "Representatives from financial organizations
that represent Ford have visited senior Gujarat government
officials, though nothing has been finalized as yet.
5. FMCG market in rural India to touch $100 bn by 2025:
Nielsen
The fast moving consumer goods market in rural India is tipped to
touch $100 bn (around Rs 45,735 crore) by 2025 on the back of
"unrelenting" demand driven by rising income levels , according to
a study by research firm The Nielsen Company.
"The Indian rural market is set to become a USD 100 billion
opportunity for retail spending in the next fifteen years," according
to a statement released by the company today.
6. China to boost grain supplies to combat inflation
• China will increase grain supplies, open up more land for planting
vegetables and crack down on hoarding as the government steps up
efforts to combat rising inflation, state media said Saturday.
• The latest moves come after consumer prices rose at their fastest pace in
two years, fuelled by soaring food costs after severe summer flooding
and more recent cold snaps hit crop yields.
• Authorities would boost the supply of grain, some vegetable oil and
soybeans to "meet consumer demand and stabilise market prices", the
official Xinhua news agency said, citing the grain administration.
• The agricultural ministry also said it would increase the area of land
available for vegetable crops "to stabilise production and increase
vegetable supplies during the winter," Xinhua said.
