RECOGNIZABLE BRANDS
•  What is it about these mega brands that
makes them so well known?
•  Let’s take a closer look at Apple to identify
best practices and see what we can apply
to our chapter brands.

@ufprssa

LOGO AND NAME RECOGNITION

The company’s simple logo and name is easy to remember. Apple ads
all have a very similar style, so it’s easy to spot.

People are crazy about Apple. Some enthusiasts are even willing to
camp out over night to get the latest and greatest product.

VALUED AT $98.3 BILLION
Apple is now the world’s most valuable brand. Even though our chapters aren’t
billion-dollar companies, we can definitely borrow some of Apple’s methods to
establish a stronger brand identity.

OUR MATERIALS

@ufprssa

# y o u rPRS SA
OUR MATERIALS
•  We develop our theme and use across all
visual communications.
•  A common theme or view helps members or
audiences feel connected. It also creates
unity that makes all communications easily
recognizable or relative to your chapter.

OUR COMMITTEES
•  Committees are a great way for our members to become more
involved with UF PRSSA and each member can become involved
with something that interests them.
–  Networking committee is ideal for members who want to build their professional
development skills through recruiting speakers to come to our general body
meeting and skills seminars.
–  Communications committee allows members to improve their writing by
helping to draft professional emails, newsletters and fliers.
–  Socials committee is perfect for members who want to hone in on their event
planning and management skills.

@ufprssa

# y o u rPRS SA
OUR COMMITTEES
•  Our chapter families/mentorship program allows members to foster
more personal relationships while also receiving professional
development skills such as resume critiques and interview skills.
•  This program makes members feel more closely connected with UF
PRSSA, and sets them up with other members to attend meetings
and socials with together, as well as reach out to if they have any
questions or need any advice.

@ufprssa

# y o u rPRS SA
OUR FIRM

@ufprssa

# y o u rPRS SA
OUR FIRM
•  Alpha PRoductions, our Chapter’s student-run public relations firm,
gives our members the opportunity to put themselves on the fast
track to a successful career in public relations.
•  By working with paying clients, Alpha Productions gives members a
taste of what agency life is like, while also allowing them to put into
practice what they learn in class and preparing them to be
competitive for internships by gaining valuable public relations
experience.

@ufprssa

# y o u rPRS SA
OUR MEETINGS
1. SPEAKERS
2. SKILL SEMINARS

@ufprssa

# y o u rPRS SA
OUR SPEAKERS
•  The first type of general body meeting we have is speakers. The
speaker will put together a presentation with our guidance and
present it to our members. It is then followed by a Q&A.
•  We have been fortunate enough to be able to bring speakers in from
all around the nation. But, if your chapter is smaller, we recommend
reaching out to local professionals and using tools like Skype to
connect with those professionals around the nation.
•  We encourage members and speakers to use our hashtag so we
can track the conversation, as you will see in the following
examples.
@ufprssa

# y o u rPRS SA
BRIAN PRICE

@ufprssa

# y o u rPRS SA
BRIAN PRICE
•  The first speaker we had was our National PRSSA
president, Brian Price. He spoke to our members about
PRSSA, the benefits that come from involvement and
ways you can make it #yourPRSSA.
•  When looking for speakers, it’s a good idea to reach out
to national PRSSA members. They are great speakers
and may have connections to other speakers.

@ufprssa

CHRISTINE PIETRYLA

@ufprssa

# y o u rPRS SA
CHRISTINE PIETRYLA
•  Second, we had Christine Pietryla, senior vice president of
public relations at Walker Sands Communication in Chicago.
She talked to us about the everyday life of a professional. She
was able to give tips on making your career the best it can be.
•  Christine is an alumna from the University of Florida.
Reaching out to alumni from your school is a great way to find
professionals for your meetings. They are usually more than
willing to come to speak with your chapter and excited to
return to their alma mater.
@ufprssa

OUR SPEAKERS

@ufprssa

HEATHER ALLISON
•

•

•

Our third speaker was Heather Allison, publicist from Country Music
Television. Heater spoke to us about how to connect to the entertainment
side of public relations. She talked about internship possibilities and what a
company like CMT expects from interns who are involved with PRSSA.
As you see, Heather’s title is publicist. Although this is not a traditional
public relations title, heather was able to speak to us about the many roles
she plays during her day. From contacting media and landing a full story in
the Billboard magazine, she uses skills from her PR degree every day.
You have to keep your members in mind when selecting speakers. Although
some members want to do corporate or agency work, other members may
be interested in jobs or opportunities that aren’t “true PR” titles.

@ufprssa

# y o u rPRS SA
OUR SKILL SEMINARS

@ufprssa

# y o u rPRS SA
OUR SKILL SEMINARS
•
•

•

A more personal experience for members because the professionals are
coming in and teaching students one-on-one.
For our next skills seminar, we are bringing in Pat McSweeney, North
Florida PRSA president. His topic will be pitching. He will give us a lesson
on pitching, what he would do-what he would expect, etc. Then he will give
us a topic to pitch about. After a few minutes of writing, Pat will edit them
and give feedback.
Besides being the PRSA president, I interned with Pat during the summer.
So he was more than willing to help us out. When you are looking for
professionals remember to consider PRSSA national connections, alumni
from your school, and reach out to those you have connections with from
internships or jobs.

REVAMP
•  At the end of each year, we have a spring summit with the newly
elected executive board.
•  The executive board discusses their vision for the upcoming year
and decides on a theme. Most of the time, they keep a central focus
on professional development. For example, this year we wanted to
make our theme actionable, but still focus on our members, so we
decided on “Connect to your future” and #yourPRSSA.
•  This idea will become the theme, and the whole process comes full
circle.

HOW TO BUILD YOUR BRAND
•  So, how can you take this back to your chapter to build your
brand?
–  Brainstorm with your executive board. What worked this
year? What didn’t? Think of what could be improved.
–  Make sure you connect all of your messages and keep a
consistent visual identity.
–  Create programming and tactics around this central theme.

  • 3. RECOGNIZABLE BRANDS •  What is it about these mega brands that makes them so well known? •  Let’s take a closer look at Apple to identify best practices and see what we can apply to our chapter brands. @ufprssa   # y o u rPRS SA
  • 4. EVERYONE KNOWS THEM Chances are you own at least one Apple device. @ufprssa   # y o u rPRS SA
  • 5. LOGO AND NAME RECOGNITION The company’s simple logo and name is easy to remember. Apple ads all have a very similar style, so it’s easy to spot. @ufprssa   # y o u rPRS SA
  • 6. CONSISTENT THEME The company is known for its innovation and sleek design. Even their retail stores have a minimalist appearance. @ufprssa   # y o u rPRS SA
  • 7. EVERYONE LOVES THEM People are crazy about Apple. Some enthusiasts are even willing to camp out over night to get the latest and greatest product. @ufprssa   # y o u rPRS SA
  • 8. VALUED AT $98.3 BILLION Apple is now the world’s most valuable brand. Even though our chapters aren’t billion-dollar companies, we can definitely borrow some of Apple’s methods to establish a stronger brand identity. @ufprssa   # y o u rPRS SA
  • 10. OUR PURPOSE •  The first thing you will want to think about is your mission. •  Make sure this is part of every piece of branding. •  Also remember to stay aligned with the PRSSA National mission. @ufprssa   # y o u rPRS SA
  • 12. OUR GAMEPLAN •  Take results from exit surveys or other type of research to decide on a strong message for the upcoming year. •  Brainstorm with the executive board. This year, our theme is “Connect to your future” and we used #yourPRSSA. @ufprssa   # y o u rPRS SA
  • 14. OUR PROMOTION •  Be sure that all of your communications are in line with your overarching theme. •  Remember to relate all of this back to your mission and vision. @ufprssa   # y o u rPRS SA
  • 16. OUR MATERIALS •  We develop our theme and use across all visual communications. •  A common theme or view helps members or audiences feel connected. It also creates unity that makes all communications easily recognizable or relative to your chapter. @ufprssa   # y o u rPRS SA

  • 19. OTHER TACTICS •  Newsletter –  Our newsletter is named "Connections" and contains all sorts of information that helps members connect to their future •  T-Shirts, Pens & Miscellaneous Items –  All relate back to our theme or incorporate #yourPRSSA in some way @ufprssa   # y o u rPRS SA
  • 20. ONLINE TACTICS •  Twitter –  All events and communications link back to our hashtag •  Emails –  All emails are themed in the same way, starting with "Connect to your Future, #yourPRSSA" –  To elaborate, a common identity with these emails helps show members and viewers that our emails are easily recognizable @ufprssa   # y o u rPRS SA
  • 23. OUR COMMITTEES •  Committees are a great way for our members to become more involved with UF PRSSA and each member can become involved with something that interests them. –  Networking committee is ideal for members who want to build their professional development skills through recruiting speakers to come to our general body meeting and skills seminars. –  Communications committee allows members to improve their writing by helping to draft professional emails, newsletters and fliers. –  Socials committee is perfect for members who want to hone in on their event planning and management skills. @ufprssa   # y o u rPRS SA
  • 24. OUR COMMITTEES •  Our chapter families/mentorship program allows members to foster more personal relationships while also receiving professional development skills such as resume critiques and interview skills. •  This program makes members feel more closely connected with UF PRSSA, and sets them up with other members to attend meetings and socials with together, as well as reach out to if they have any questions or need any advice.   @ufprssa   # y o u rPRS SA
  • 25. OUR FIRM @ufprssa   # y o u rPRS SA
  • 26. OUR FIRM •  Alpha PRoductions, our Chapter’s student-run public relations firm, gives our members the opportunity to put themselves on the fast track to a successful career in public relations. •  By working with paying clients, Alpha Productions gives members a taste of what agency life is like, while also allowing them to put into practice what they learn in class and preparing them to be competitive for internships by gaining valuable public relations experience. @ufprssa   # y o u rPRS SA
  • 27. OUR MEETINGS 1. SPEAKERS 2. SKILL SEMINARS @ufprssa   # y o u rPRS SA
  • 28. OUR SPEAKERS •  The first type of general body meeting we have is speakers. The speaker will put together a presentation with our guidance and present it to our members. It is then followed by a Q&A. •  We have been fortunate enough to be able to bring speakers in from all around the nation. But, if your chapter is smaller, we recommend reaching out to local professionals and using tools like Skype to connect with those professionals around the nation. •  We encourage members and speakers to use our hashtag so we can track the conversation, as you will see in the following examples. @ufprssa   # y o u rPRS SA
  • 29. BRIAN PRICE @ufprssa   # y o u rPRS SA
  • 30. BRIAN PRICE •  The first speaker we had was our National PRSSA president, Brian Price. He spoke to our members about PRSSA, the benefits that come from involvement and ways you can make it #yourPRSSA. •  When looking for speakers, it’s a good idea to reach out to national PRSSA members. They are great speakers and may have connections to other speakers. @ufprssa   # y o u rPRS SA
  • 32. CHRISTINE PIETRYLA •  Second, we had Christine Pietryla, senior vice president of public relations at Walker Sands Communication in Chicago. She talked to us about the everyday life of a professional. She was able to give tips on making your career the best it can be. •  Christine is an alumna from the University of Florida. Reaching out to alumni from your school is a great way to find professionals for your meetings. They are usually more than willing to come to speak with your chapter and excited to return to their alma mater. @ufprssa   # y o u rPRS SA
  • 33. OUR SPEAKERS @ufprssa   # y o u rPRS SA
  • 34. HEATHER ALLISON •  •  •  Our third speaker was Heather Allison, publicist from Country Music Television. Heater spoke to us about how to connect to the entertainment side of public relations. She talked about internship possibilities and what a company like CMT expects from interns who are involved with PRSSA. As you see, Heather’s title is publicist. Although this is not a traditional public relations title, heather was able to speak to us about the many roles she plays during her day. From contacting media and landing a full story in the Billboard magazine, she uses skills from her PR degree every day. You have to keep your members in mind when selecting speakers. Although some members want to do corporate or agency work, other members may be interested in jobs or opportunities that aren’t “true PR” titles. @ufprssa   # y o u rPRS SA
  • 35. OUR SKILL SEMINARS @ufprssa   # y o u rPRS SA
  • 36. OUR SKILL SEMINARS •  •  •  A more personal experience for members because the professionals are coming in and teaching students one-on-one. For our next skills seminar, we are bringing in Pat McSweeney, North Florida PRSA president. His topic will be pitching. He will give us a lesson on pitching, what he would do-what he would expect, etc. Then he will give us a topic to pitch about. After a few minutes of writing, Pat will edit them and give feedback. Besides being the PRSA president, I interned with Pat during the summer. So he was more than willing to help us out. When you are looking for professionals remember to consider PRSSA national connections, alumni from your school, and reach out to those you have connections with from internships or jobs. @ufprssa   # y o u rPRS SA
  • 38. REVAMP •  At the end of each year, we have a spring summit with the newly elected executive board. •  The executive board discusses their vision for the upcoming year and decides on a theme. Most of the time, they keep a central focus on professional development. For example, this year we wanted to make our theme actionable, but still focus on our members, so we decided on “Connect to your future” and #yourPRSSA. •  This idea will become the theme, and the whole process comes full circle. @ufprssa   # y o u rPRS SA
  • 40. 1.  2.  3.  HOW TO BUILD YOUR THEME @ufprssa   BRAINSTORM CONNECT YOUR MESSAGES IMPLEMENT # y o u rPRS SA
  • 41. HOW TO BUILD YOUR BRAND •  So, how can you take this back to your chapter to build your brand? –  Brainstorm with your executive board. What worked this year? What didn’t? Think of what could be improved. –  Make sure you connect all of your messages and keep a consistent visual identity. –  Create programming and tactics around this central theme. @ufprssa   # y o u rPRS SA
