- 2. DVD as We Remember It • At the beginning of 2010, Blockbuster Video had over 4,000 active stores • Before this period, other major rental chains such as Hollywood Video, Movie Gallery, West Coast Video were also going strong • Suncoast Video, FYE, Borders Books, Barnes and Noble were at one point the top stores to buy the most current DVD product for both studios and Indies.
- 3. The Emergence of Netflix DVD Rental • Service started in 1999 • By 2009, Netflix had over 100,000 titles in their catalog and over 10 million subscribers. NO shelves, more opportunity to offer more obscure and unique titles! • Blockbuster declined to give figures to their competitive DVD by mail rental service this same year
- 4. Transition to Netflix VOD and Growth of Additional Outlets (“2nd screen“ viewing) • Netflix began offering video streaming services in 2008 • In 2010, 80% of American Internet users had watched video content online • This same year, 48% of mobile users who downloaded video preferred apps to a normal browser
- 5. Fall of the traditional DVD Retailers • By the end of 2010, Blockbuster filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and closed over 900 stores. • As of 2013, there are roughly 500 Blockbuster stores left and actively shrinking. • Hollywood Video, Movie Gallery, West Coast Video, Suncoast Video, Border’s Books are no longer in business.

- 8. What about here? Family Video is currently the largest brick & mortar video rental chain in the US with over 775 stores and GROWING!!!!!
- 9. Or here?? There are over 16,000 public libraries in the US. And YES they are actively buying everything from Iron Man 3 to that niche documentary on that small plant in South Africa your friend told you about three years ago.
- 10. But don’t forget about our internet friends. Even the large corporations are offering MASS indie DVD titles on their online servers. Sales continue to flourish from loyal shoppers who use gift cards and bonus points not offered on VOD servers.
- 11. This is a bit of a tease... Who else is offering DVDs and what other consumers are buying them? More importantly…. HOW DO I GET MY DVD INTO THESE OUTLETS?
