Key information about different
graphic narrative types and
existing products from these
genres
Fable
A short narrative that involves a moral at the
conclusion of the fable. These stories usually have
animals as the main character

The Boy who cried Wolf
The Ant and the Grasshopper
The Fox and the crow
The Miser
The Tortoise and the Hare
The Wolf in Sheep’s clothes
Aesop’s fable

Aesop was a real person, but not
known by many. He lived in the sixth
century BC and created these fables

Most of these fables are
within Aesop’s fables,
but also fables in their
own right.
Analysis of Fable
This fable is shorter than a conventional fable, but
with the child like illustrations, this amount of text
may fit the target audience perfectly.

The lexis used within the fable shows it is aimed at
children, however, an older child.

This fable has emulated the
traditional style and enforced a
moral at the end of the fable.
Folktale
Folktales are stories passed down from generation to
generation. They are told differently each time to make it
more interesting for following generations. The purpose of
a folktale is to communicate the characteristics and the
culture of the people who it originated from. These
Folktales are mainly myths created by different origins of
people, normally monsters and ghouls are the main
characters they create in them.

The man who never lied
The four dragons
Why the sun and the moon liv in the sky
Why the Cheetah’s cheeks are stained
Clever Jackal gets away
The Grasshopper and the toad
The origin of fire
Axe murder hollow
Brothers’ revenge
Windigo
Analysis of Folk Tale

The fictional names are another technique
traditional folk tales use.
The illustrations follow a folk tale style of made up
pictures, instead of other techniques like photography.

This particular example is aimed at an older
children demographic because of the language
used throughout this extract.
Fairy tales
Stories that tend to be fiction, in which magic and monsters
are real. Traditionally created for children. They have a lot
of characters, but a simple narrative that can be followed
by a child.

The Red Shoes
Cinderella
Rapunzel
Rumpelstiltskin
Hansel & Gretel
Little Red riding hood
The ugly Duckling
Snow White and the Seven Dwarves
Analysis of Fairy Tale
Childlike illustrations suggest a young demographic
is the intended demographic for this particular
Fairy tale.

However some lexis used in this passage of text maybe
suited to an older target audience than first appears.
Comic books/strips
Comic books are illustrations enclosed in individual
dividers, which have captions or speech/thought bubbles
within the slides. The purpose of the comic book is to tell
the narrative through the images.
Usually, but not always, films are inspired by
comic books, such as:

300
Alien vs Predator
Batman (various)
Blade
Superman
Spiderman
Captain America
Thor
Scot Pilgrim vs the world
Wolverine
Hellboy
Iron Man
Hulk
Kick-Ass
The League of extraordinary gentlemen
Analysis of Comic books
The target demographic for this particular product is a teenage one,
however, due to the moral filled nature of the story, a younger demographic
could be considered.

The slides are conventional for a comic book but the number of them isn’t.
Traditionally 6 or 8 slides per page in a comic book

The amount of text would also be a factor on the demographic of the
comic book. In relation to other comic books, this one has quite a bit of
text, so the audience will be higher.
Graphic Novel
Very similar to comic books, in the way it communicates the narrative to it’s
audience using illustrations. However, comic books are cheap and quite
badly made, Graphic novels are bound like a hard back book and can cost a
lot of money to buy.

Watchmen
Similar to comic books, graphic novels
inspired films.

V for Vendetta
The league of Extraordinary gentlemen
This graphic novel has emulated the traditional six slide
approach to graphic novels. However, an unconventional
layout of the slides, with them not been of equal size.

Graphic novels have an older demographic than the other
narrative types, however, in the genre, this novel has a target
demographic of older teenagers. This is due to the illustrations
and the amount of text.
