4. WHAT IS DESCRIPTIVE WRITING?
It is a form of free writing that allows the author
to:
Develop the interest in his/her reader by providing
details and elaboration about:
person, thing or event.
The description is organizing the details, actions
or events in order and through the use of:
descriptive words (adjectives, adjectival clauses etc.)
5. DESCRIPTIVE WRITING STRUCTURE
A good piece of descriptive writing has:
• - References to the five senses:
• Sight, Sound, Smell, Touch, Taste (where applicable)
- Logical and effective order of sentences, structure, &
sequence.
- Use transitional words (e.g. “then”, “suddenly”)
These words emphasize the sequence of the events and
description.
- place supporting details where they are most appropriate
Add interesting words that give a better sense of the
atmosphere. (“fiery sunsets, calm, soothing waters etc.)
- use a conclusion that gives - a sense of resolution
6. • Sight:
• The morning crowd had been gathering around in a courtyard. They were waiting for a
performance to begin but not a lot of people noticed an old lady by herself. It is peak hour
and many are rushing for their buses
• Sound: Loud conversations among commuters and the sound of road traffic is deafening. The
honking of cars and vehicles in the street provided a steady rhythm of the city.
• Smell: The smell of local dishes wafted through the air and persuaded many people to have
an early lunch
• Touch: (May not be applicable…as the picture is about a hawker at a bus interchange
• Taste: (May not be applicable…as the picture is about a hawker at a bus interchange
