TRAITS OF GOOD WRITING
 Good writing has the following
characteristics:
 Ideas
 Organization
 Word Choice
 Sentence Fluency
 Editing
WHAT IS DESCRIPTIVE WRITING?
 It is a form of free writing that allows the author
to:
 Develop the interest in his/her reader by providing
details and elaboration about:
 person, thing or event.
 The description is organizing the details, actions
or events in order and through the use of:
 descriptive words (adjectives, adjectival clauses etc.)
DESCRIPTIVE WRITING STRUCTURE
 A good piece of descriptive writing has:
• - References to the five senses:
• Sight, Sound, Smell, Touch, Taste (where applicable)
 - Logical and effective order of sentences, structure, &
sequence.
 - Use transitional words (e.g. “then”, “suddenly”)
 These words emphasize the sequence of the events and
description.
 - place supporting details where they are most appropriate
 Add interesting words that give a better sense of the
atmosphere. (“fiery sunsets, calm, soothing waters etc.)
 - use a conclusion that gives - a sense of resolution
• Sight:
• The morning crowd had been gathering around in a courtyard. They were waiting for a
performance to begin but not a lot of people noticed an old lady by herself. It is peak hour
and many are rushing for their buses
• Sound: Loud conversations among commuters and the sound of road traffic is deafening. The
honking of cars and vehicles in the street provided a steady rhythm of the city.
• Smell: The smell of local dishes wafted through the air and persuaded many people to have
an early lunch
• Touch: (May not be applicable…as the picture is about a hawker at a bus interchange
• Taste: (May not be applicable…as the picture is about a hawker at a bus interchange
LET’S PRACTICE A FULL ESSAY
 In a few moments, a photo will appear on
the screen.
 Using the picture I want you to come up
with a story around which describe the
scene.
CONCLUSION
 What are the traits of the good descriptive
writing?
 What are the senses that can be used to
develop descriptions?

  • 2. AGENDA  By the end of this lesson you will be able to  Understand the structure of descriptive essay  Construct sentences that convey a full description  Practice writing a descriptive writing piece
  • 3. TRAITS OF GOOD WRITING  Good writing has the following characteristics:  Ideas  Organization  Word Choice  Sentence Fluency  Editing
  • 4. WHAT IS DESCRIPTIVE WRITING?  It is a form of free writing that allows the author to:  Develop the interest in his/her reader by providing details and elaboration about:  person, thing or event.  The description is organizing the details, actions or events in order and through the use of:  descriptive words (adjectives, adjectival clauses etc.)
  • 5. DESCRIPTIVE WRITING STRUCTURE  A good piece of descriptive writing has: • - References to the five senses: • Sight, Sound, Smell, Touch, Taste (where applicable)  - Logical and effective order of sentences, structure, & sequence.  - Use transitional words (e.g. “then”, “suddenly”)  These words emphasize the sequence of the events and description.  - place supporting details where they are most appropriate  Add interesting words that give a better sense of the atmosphere. (“fiery sunsets, calm, soothing waters etc.)  - use a conclusion that gives - a sense of resolution
  • 6. • Sight: • The morning crowd had been gathering around in a courtyard. They were waiting for a performance to begin but not a lot of people noticed an old lady by herself. It is peak hour and many are rushing for their buses • Sound: Loud conversations among commuters and the sound of road traffic is deafening. The honking of cars and vehicles in the street provided a steady rhythm of the city. • Smell: The smell of local dishes wafted through the air and persuaded many people to have an early lunch • Touch: (May not be applicable…as the picture is about a hawker at a bus interchange • Taste: (May not be applicable…as the picture is about a hawker at a bus interchange
  • 7. LET’S PRACTICE A FULL ESSAY  In a few moments, a photo will appear on the screen.  Using the picture I want you to come up with a story around which describe the scene.
  • 8. CONCLUSION  What are the traits of the good descriptive writing?  What are the senses that can be used to develop descriptions?
