PAST SIMPLE

USE
We use the past simple to talk about
something that began and ended in
the past, for past events and actions,
principally in stories.
Ex.: I played basketball last weekend
with Emma and her friends.

USE
We use the past continuous to describe
a past scene or situation, principally in
stories. Something that is “continuous”
in the past.
Ex.: The sun was shining so bright.



PAST SIMPLE X PAST CONTINUOUS

They were playing tennis and listening to music
when Maria arrived and started to scream.
-We separate” the description of the action with
words like “when”.

(Listening text – exercise 4, Unit 3)

My grandma Lauren lives in the country and I always visit her
in the vacations. Last summer was very cool. My uncle Martin
took me and my cousins, Jim and Nelly, for a walk in a sunny
afternoon.
We opened the gate of the house and went to the big field
next to it. We started to run until the other side. There we
went to a path that led us to a little market. We bought
potatoes, lettuce and other vegetables. We were walking in the
path when suddenly we saw a horse alone in the middle of it.
Uncle Martin said it was probably from the big Stephens Farm
that was near where we were. ‘Let’s return this horse’ said
my uncle.
15 minutes later we were very close to the horse’s farm, but
we had to pass through the orchard first. The horse didn’t
want to go with us. He just wanted to eat apples! My uncle
tried to pull him but he couldn’t, of course. So all of us tried
together but the only thing we managed was to get wet,
because the horse made us fall in the lake next to the orchard.
We came back home laughing a lot.

  • 9. 2nd revision of English - Luiza Collet – 7th grade – Teacher Patrícia – 1st Quarter – March 9 (Listening text – exercise 4, Unit 3) My grandma Lauren lives in the country and I always visit her in the vacations. Last summer was very cool. My uncle Martin took me and my cousins, Jim and Nelly, for a walk in a sunny afternoon. We opened the gate of the house and went to the big field next to it. We started to run until the other side. There we went to a path that led us to a little market. We bought potatoes, lettuce and other vegetables. We were walking in the path when suddenly we saw a horse alone in the middle of it. Uncle Martin said it was probably from the big Stephens Farm that was near where we were. ‘Let’s return this horse’ said my uncle. 15 minutes later we were very close to the horse’s farm, but we had to pass through the orchard first. The horse didn’t want to go with us. He just wanted to eat apples! My uncle tried to pull him but he couldn’t, of course. So all of us tried together but the only thing we managed was to get wet, because the horse made us fall in the lake next to the orchard. We came back home laughing a lot.  This study was corrected by the teacher
