This study examined the relationships between safety attitudes, behaviors, and climate perceptions among company car drivers through questionnaires. Correlation analysis found relationships between more positive safety attitudes and perceptions and less risky driving behaviors. Cluster analysis identified three driver subgroups: two with more violations and negative views and a third with fewer violations and positive safety views. The study developed a brief questionnaire to simultaneously measure multiple safety factors among drivers and aimed to identify subgroups for targeted interventions.
A Report On The Measurement Of Company Car Drivers Aberrant Behaviors Safety Attitudes And Safety Climate Perceptions V3
1. Company Car Drivers' Aberrant Behaviors, Safety Attitudes And Safety Climate Perceptions Musicant Oren Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel August, 2011 Acknowledgments: Edna Schechtman and Hillel Bar-Gera for their wise advice Ran-Naor Foundation of road safety research in Israel
2. Motivation for this study Company car drivers are at a higher risk: Driver factors: Safety attitudes and Behaviors while driving. Work factors : High mileage, fatigue, time pressure and organizational safety climate. Are there interactions between Behaviors, Attitudes and Safety Climate perceptions? Correlations Subgroups of drivers
3. Measurement Measurement tools have been proposed: Driver Behavior Questionnaire Driver Attitude Questionnaire Safety Climate Questionnaire Measurement problem Overall questionnaires’ length is too long: drivers are not willing or able, to devote the time necessary to accurately complete them (Davey et al, 2007)
5. Correlations (6) * P<0.05, ** P<0.01, *** P<0.001 All variables other than violations were scored in the direction of safety (higher score indicates a "safer" attitude)
6. Clusters of Drivers Cluster 1 (N=28) & Cluster 2 (N=37) Similar: High involvement in traffic violations Negative attitudes towards speed & alcohol use Negative views about management commitment Cluster 3 (N=45) Low involvement in traffic violations Positive safety attitudes Positive safety climate perceptions Different: law enforcement : Cluster 1 < Cluster 2 Driver ability : Cluster 1 < Cluster 2 Work pressure : Cluster 1 >Cluster 2
7. Summary Company car drivers questionnaire Multiple safety-related factors Relatively brief Correlations between Safety attitudes, safety climate perceptions and reported behavior Cluster analysis suggest on subgroups Limitations: Small sample size ,One organization
