Good bosses look good on paper while great bosses look great in person as their actions show their
value. However, where REMARKABLE bosses are concerned, what you see is far from all you get.
ABLE bosses are also able to forget that mistake. They realize
that viewing an employee through the lens of one incident will
forever impact how they treat that employee and they know
that the employee will be able to tell.
They transform company goals into the employees’
personal goals.
Great bosses inspire their teams to achieve
company goals. Whom will you work harder for: a
company or yourself? REMARKABLE bosses make their
employees feel that what they do each and every day will
benefit them as much as it does the company. Whether
this is achieved through professional development, provid-
ing growth opportunities, or giving them a chance to shine;
employees who feel a sense of personal purpose almost al-
ways outperform employees who feel a sense of company pur-
pose and they have a lot more fun doing it! REMARKABLE
bosses know their teams well enough to tap into the personal,
not just the professional.
They look past the action to the emotion or motivation.
Employees are humans and so are bound to make mistakes
or simply do the wrong thing. When this happens it is easy to

They forgive…and they forget.
When an employee makes a mis-
take, especially a major mistake, it is
easy to forever view that employee
through the perspective of that mis-
take. It is important to remember that
one mistake, or weakness does not
make up the whole person. A great
boss is able to step back, set aside the
mistake, think about the whole employ-
ee and forgive. However, REMARK-

Boxty originated in the North West of Ireland in the 1600’s. It is steeped in
tradition in the region and now nationally recognized. A hidden treasure on the Irish food
trail with hand crafted style, Boxty are Irish potato griddle cakes, made from both baked
potato and raw, grated potato, they are pan fried until crisp and golden. Serve them with
butter or honey.
INGREDIENTS
½ pound potatoes, unpeeled
1 ½ cups buttermilk
½ pound potatoes, peeled and grated
1 Âľ cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
Salt and ground black pepper to taste
2 tablespoons butter, as needed
DIRECTIONS
1) Preheat oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C). Scrub the unpeeled potatoes and
prick them several times with a fork; place onto a baking sheet.
2) Bake in the preheated oven until the potatoes are easily pierced with a fork, 50
minutes to 1 hour. Remove, cool, and peel. Mash the potatoes with the buttermilk.
Stir in the grated raw potato, flour, baking soda, salt, and pepper.
3) Melt the butter in a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Scoop the potato
mixture into the skillet to make 3 inch cakes. Fry until golden and crisp, turning
once, about 5 minutes per side.
BETTER BUSINESS PRACTICE
St. Patrick’s Daytakes place each year on March 17th
which is the traditional religious feast day of Saint Patrick. According to
History.Com the very first St. Patrick’s Day parade took place in the United
States on March 17, 1762 when Irish soldiers serving in the British military
marched through New York City. Today there is an annual St. Patrick’s Day
parade, in New York City, in which 150,000 – 250,000 marchers take part
– no floats or automobiles are allowed. Corned beef and cabbage is a
traditional St. Patrick’s Day dish, lime green chrysanthemums are often
requested on this date and shamrocks and leprechauns are the universal
symbols of this day.
Originally, the color associated with Saint Patrick was blue. However,
over the years the color green and its association with Saint Patrick's day
grew. Green ribbons and shamrocks were worn in celebration of St
Patrick's Day as early as the 17th century. Of course, here at
OpenWorks, “green” is one of our favorite words. We realize that green
cleaning not only provides our customers with a sparkling facility but
a healthy facility at the same time. Statistics show that healthy
environments have been estimated to increase worker productivity
between .5% and 7%. Considering an average cost of salaries and
benefits is approximately $130 per square foot, each 1% increase in
productivity translates to a savings of $1.30 per square foot – or
$130,000 in annual savings for a 100,000 square foot building.
Given these numbers it is critical that we do all that we can to help our
customers achieve a healthy working environment for their teams. Here are
some tips to keep in mind when purchasing your green cleaning chemicals:
Go Green for
St. Patrick’s Day
Choose products that:
• Contain no known, probable or possible carcinogens
• Have neutral pH…products with moderate pH (7)

• Use disinfectants only as required by state health law

assume that they don’t listen or don’t care.
However, most of the time there is a deeper rea-
son: they may feel stifled, feel they have no con-
trol, feel marginalized or frustrated, or perhaps,
they are just trying to find a sense of meaning in
their work that salary and titles can’t provide.
Great bosses deal with the actions. REMARK-
ABLE bosses search for the underlying issues
that once overcome lead to a much bigger
change for the better.
They make fewer public decisions.
In many situations the best person to make
a decision isn’t the boss, most of the time the
best decision maker is the team member clos-
est to the issue. Decisiveness is a quality you
will find in a good boss. A REMARKABLE boss
is decisive but in a very different way: they de-
cide they aren’t the right person and then de-
cide who is the right person. REMARKABLE
bosses do this not to avoid making those deci-
sions but because they know they shouldn’t
make those decisions.
They let their team members learn their own
lessons.
It is challenging to let your employees
learn their own lessons – it is far easier for a
boss to debrief the employee and turn a teach-
able moment into a lesson learned. Keep in
mind, however, that the lessons we learn on
our own are the lessons we forever remember.
REMARKABLE bosses don’t scold or dictate;
they work with the employee to figure out what
happened and how to resolve it. Great employ-
ees don’t need to be scolded or reprimanded –
they know they did wrong – staying silent is of-
ten the best way to ensure that they remember.
2013 brings even higher costs associated
with employee turn-over, it is to your benefit to
make the “right” hire in the first place and then
spend some quality time developing and retain-
ing these employees. Will you be the next RE-
MARKABLE boss?!

However, where REMARKABLE bosses are concerned, what you see is far from all you get. ABLE bosses are also able to forget that mistake. They realize that viewing an employee through the lens of one incident will forever impact how they treat that employee and they know that the employee will be able to tell. They transform company goals into the employees’ personal goals. Great bosses inspire their teams to achieve company goals. Whom will you work harder for: a company or yourself? REMARKABLE bosses make their employees feel that what they do each and every day will benefit them as much as it does the company. Whether this is achieved through professional development, provid- ing growth opportunities, or giving them a chance to shine; employees who feel a sense of personal purpose almost al- ways outperform employees who feel a sense of company pur- pose and they have a lot more fun doing it! REMARKABLE bosses know their teams well enough to tap into the personal, not just the professional. They look past the action to the emotion or motivation. Employees are humans and so are bound to make mistakes or simply do the wrong thing. When this happens it is easy to ARE YOU A Great Boss OR A Remarkable Boss? peningDoors continued on page 4 They forgive…and they forget. When an employee makes a mis- take, especially a major mistake, it is easy to forever view that employee through the perspective of that mis- take. It is important to remember that one mistake, or weakness does not make up the whole person. A great boss is able to step back, set aside the mistake, think about the whole employ- ee and forgive. OVID “A leader is best when people barely know he exists, when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say: we did it ourselves." LAO TZU “The best executive is the one who has sense enough to pick good men to do what he wants done, and self-restraint enough to keep from meddling with them while they do it." THEODORE ROOSEVELT “Outstanding leaders go out of their way to boost the self- esteem of their personnel. If people believe in themselves, it’s amazing what they can accomplish." SAM WALTON “It is better to spend money like there’s no tomorrow than to spend tonight like there’s no money!" IRISH TOAST “May you live as long as you want and never want as long as you live." IRISH SAYING “May the saddest day of your future be no worse than the happiest day of your past." IRISH SAYING Celebrate this St. Patrick’s Day with some Boxty originated in the North West of Ireland in the 1600’s. It is steeped in tradition in the region and now nationally recognized. A hidden treasure on the Irish food trail with hand crafted style, Boxty are Irish potato griddle cakes, made from both baked potato and raw, grated potato, they are pan fried until crisp and golden. Serve them with butter or honey. INGREDIENTS ½ pound potatoes, unpeeled 1 ½ cups buttermilk ½ pound potatoes, peeled and grated 1 Âľ cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda Salt and ground black pepper to taste 2 tablespoons butter, as needed DIRECTIONS 1) Preheat oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C). Scrub the unpeeled potatoes and prick them several times with a fork; place onto a baking sheet. 2) Bake in the preheated oven until the potatoes are easily pierced with a fork, 50 minutes to 1 hour. Remove, cool, and peel. Mash the potatoes with the buttermilk. Stir in the grated raw potato, flour, baking soda, salt, and pepper. 3) Melt the butter in a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Scoop the potato mixture into the skillet to make 3 inch cakes. Fry until golden and crisp, turning once, about 5 minutes per side.
  • 3. BETTER BUSINESS PRACTICE St. Patrick’s Daytakes place each year on March 17th which is the traditional religious feast day of Saint Patrick. According to History.Com the very first St. Patrick’s Day parade took place in the United States on March 17, 1762 when Irish soldiers serving in the British military marched through New York City. Today there is an annual St. Patrick’s Day parade, in New York City, in which 150,000 – 250,000 marchers take part – no floats or automobiles are allowed. Corned beef and cabbage is a traditional St. Patrick’s Day dish, lime green chrysanthemums are often requested on this date and shamrocks and leprechauns are the universal symbols of this day. Originally, the color associated with Saint Patrick was blue. However, over the years the color green and its association with Saint Patrick's day grew. Green ribbons and shamrocks were worn in celebration of St Patrick's Day as early as the 17th century. Of course, here at OpenWorks, “green” is one of our favorite words. We realize that green cleaning not only provides our customers with a sparkling facility but a healthy facility at the same time. Statistics show that healthy environments have been estimated to increase worker productivity between .5% and 7%. Considering an average cost of salaries and benefits is approximately $130 per square foot, each 1% increase in productivity translates to a savings of $1.30 per square foot – or $130,000 in annual savings for a 100,000 square foot building. Given these numbers it is critical that we do all that we can to help our customers achieve a healthy working environment for their teams. Here are some tips to keep in mind when purchasing your green cleaning chemicals: Go Green for St. Patrick’s Day Choose products that: • Contain no known, probable or possible carcinogens • Have neutral pH…products with moderate pH (7) • Are non-irritating to eyes & skin • Have no short-term (acute) or long-term (chronic) health hazards • Are free of, or are low in, Volatile Organic Compounds • Use disinfectants only as required by state health law • Avoid fragrances (odors) and dyes • Are non-flammable • Are non-reactive. California Joyce Ferrer assume that they don’t listen or don’t care. However, most of the time there is a deeper rea- son: they may feel stifled, feel they have no con- trol, feel marginalized or frustrated, or perhaps, they are just trying to find a sense of meaning in their work that salary and titles can’t provide. Great bosses deal with the actions. REMARK- ABLE bosses search for the underlying issues that once overcome lead to a much bigger change for the better. They make fewer public decisions. In many situations the best person to make a decision isn’t the boss, most of the time the best decision maker is the team member clos- est to the issue. Decisiveness is a quality you will find in a good boss. A REMARKABLE boss is decisive but in a very different way: they de- cide they aren’t the right person and then de- cide who is the right person. REMARKABLE bosses do this not to avoid making those deci- sions but because they know they shouldn’t make those decisions. They let their team members learn their own lessons. It is challenging to let your employees learn their own lessons – it is far easier for a boss to debrief the employee and turn a teach- able moment into a lesson learned. Keep in mind, however, that the lessons we learn on our own are the lessons we forever remember. REMARKABLE bosses don’t scold or dictate; they work with the employee to figure out what happened and how to resolve it. Great employ- ees don’t need to be scolded or reprimanded – they know they did wrong – staying silent is of- ten the best way to ensure that they remember. 2013 brings even higher costs associated with employee turn-over, it is to your benefit to make the “right” hire in the first place and then spend some quality time developing and retain- ing these employees.
