This presentation was delivered at the 2019 National Planning Conference in San Francisco. Summary points for planners and community organizations can partner with people working in tech. 1. What: For planners who want to plan for broadband infrastructure, adoption, and digital inclusion, the tech industry is an overlooked partner that wants to solve big problems and needs planners’ help. 2. Why: The consequences of not partnering with tech include harm to already marginalized communities and sections of the public and the industry needs planners to plan for digital inclusion to meet future labor demands. 4. How: Seek out spaces where tech conversations are happening, partner on mentorship and giving, invite techies to participate in an experience (such as a connectivity walk audit), and speak in common language.

In October 2009, the City of Ottawa conducted an Employee Engagement Survey. The purpose was to identify the areas that could help improve job satisfaction and commitment for City employees. The following were identified as areas requiring improvement by the Organizational Performance and Development (ODP) group: • Interaction with Supervisors • Managing Workload • Organizational Value • Career Growth and Development Learn how the City of Ottawa: - cultivated the best ideas possible by providing employees with the opportunity to learn about each of the issues so they could provide informed input in the form of sharing new ideas or voting on others' ideas - received over 80% participation with an average of greater than one idea per employee

Recent research by MIT Sloan Management shows that 70% of CEO’s believe that Social Business will important to their organisation within three years, and that many believe that social business offers opportunities to transform their organisations. But many organisations are being held back due to a lack of strategy, no clear business case or value proposition and competing priorities. Industry analysts Gartner estimates that 80% of social business efforts will fail. This session will define clearly define social business, show how to align social business initiatives with competitive strategy and present a framework for social business transformation using Microsoft technologies including SharePoint, Office365, Yammer and Dynamics CRM. Based on a blend of consulting expertise, real world stories and on-going doctoral research we go beyond sound bites, rhetoric, and anecdotes and deliver practical guidance grounded in management science and experience that will enable you to complete your successful social business transformation.

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
