2. Why You Need Good Credit
• If you want a credit card, a home, or
even a job, your credit score matters.
• Missed payments, high credit utilization,
and inquiries can all lower your score
very fast.
• But are there ways to improve your
score quickly too? The answer is
yes…there are some things you can do
to help the process along.
3. Get a Free Credit Report
• You are entitled to a free credit report
from all 3 major credit bureaus each
year.
• Look at each one closely as each has
different information reported.
• Scrutinize the reports for any errors that
may affect your score and notify the
credit bureau immediately.
4. Get a New Credit Card
• There are credit cards for bad credit
designed specifically to help you improve
your credit score.
• Make sure the card reports to all three (3)
major credit bureaus like a secured credit
card.
• Look out for prepaid cards that charge
exorbitant fees; these are not the right type
of card to help you improve your score
because they don’t report to the credit
bureaus
5. Negotiate
• See if you can work out a payment
plan to get your debt down.
• Write a letter to your creditor to see if
they'll remove poor marks.
• If you were a good customer in the
past, they may agree.
6. Get Your Credit Utilization Down
• Credit utilization is one of the most important criteria for a credit
score.
• Set a goal to get utilization down to under 33%.
• If you can, ask for an increase in credit limit. For a secured credit
card, you will need to increase your security deposit.
7. Learn to Budget
• Don't use your cards unless
you have to.
• Write your expenses down
and create a budget.
• Set up automated payments
to make sure everything is
paid on time.
