WHAT IS HEPATITIS?
  “Hepatitis”

means inflammation of the liver
  It’s a virus caused by infection, drugs, or toxins
  There are 5 types of Viral Hepatitis. Hepatitis
viruses A, B, C, D, and E
  The most common types of the Hepatitis virus
are A, B, and C
HEPATITIS A
  This

type of Hepatitis is caused by the
Hepatitis A Virus (HAV)

  This
  It’s

is the mildest form of Hepatitis

transmitted through food or water
that has been contaminated by sewage or
an infected person
HEPATITIS A
  Does

not result in chronic infection or chronic
liver disease

  Infection

  The

can last for up to 15-50 days

best way to prevent Hepatitis A is to get

vaccinated
HEPATITIS B
  Cause

(HBV)

  It

by infection of the Hepatitis B virus

is usually transmitted sexually

  Incubation

period is anywhere between 6
weeks to 6 months and symptoms are the
same as Hepatitis A

  Infection

can be self-limited or chronic with
5-10% of people infected becoming chronic
carriers
HEPATITIS C
  Caused

by the Hepatitis C Virus (HCV)

  Most

common chronic bloodborne infection
in the United States

  Can

be transmitted sexually but is most
commonly transmitted by direct contact
with infected blood


Usually through injection drug use
HEPATITIS C
  Has

the same symptoms as Hepatitis A
and B

  Can

be passed through a pregnant woman
to her child

  85-90%

carriers

  Can

of people infected become chronic

lead to cirrhosis of the liver or liver
cancer
HEPATITIS D
  Hepatitis

D is caused by the Hepatitis D
virus (HDV)

  It is a serious liver disease that relies on the HBV Virus

to replicate

  It is not common in the United states
HEPATITIS E
E is caused by the Hepatitis E
Virus (HEV) and usually results in acute
infection

  Hepatitis

  It’s

transmitted through the ingestion of fecal
matter


  It

Usually by contaminated water

does not result in a chronic infection

  Not

common in the United States but is
common in many parts of the world
SYMPTOMS
  Symptoms

of Hepatitis A include: Fatigue,
Fever, Abdominal Pain, Nausea, Loss of
Appetite, Diarrhea, and Jaundice

  Jaundice

– increased bile pigment levels in the
blood which causes yellowing of the skin and the
whites of the eyes
TREATMENT
  Hepatitis



No specific treatment
Cope with the symptoms

  Hepatitis





A

B

Injection of hepatitis B immune globuline within
24 hours of infection
Antiviral medication
Liver Transplant

  Hepatitis




Possibly no treatment necessary
Antiviral medications
METHODS FOR PREVENTION
  Vaccination

is the only way to protect people
from hepatitis


There are vaccines available for Hepatitis
A,B and C



Wash your hands regularly



Avoid contaminated food and water
