Ever tried optimizing a slow Python application and thought: “Oh! I wish I could just write this bit it in Rust”? Well, turns out you can! Let’s discuss why Rust is a better choice than C, how to use Rust to make your apps lightning fast and how to get away with it; without your users even noticing. As Infrastructure Engineers at Yelp, the challenge we face everyday is: scale. Yelp is mostly a Python shop, so our work often revolves around making Python applications run faster. Until now, we have been using different techniques: faster interpreters, or, more often, C code. Given its safety guarantees, performance and promise of better tooling than C, we decided we had to give Rust a try. The initial results helped reinforce that there was a lot of opportunity for Rust to play an important role in our production code. Yelp heavily relies on the Apache Avro serialization format for its internal infrastructure. During the talk, we will show how we implemented avro-rs, an Avro serialization/deserialization library in Rust, how we were able to call it from Python (and in theory from any other language) with very little code, using tools such as cbindgen, CFFI and Milksnake. This talk would outline how easy it is to write interoperable code in a performant language like Rust and why a company should invest in Rust, over the many other available alternatives, to run production services.

A discussion on the upcoming new features in ES6 and how they change the way we build applications with JavaScript. Most Notable Upcoming Changes in EcmaScript 6 Classes: Classes are now first-class citizens in ES6. The language offers support for classes ("class" keyword), constructors ("constructor" keyword) and the "extend" keyword for inheritance. Modules: Modules provide a much needed way to segment and organize JavaScript applications in logical chunks of code. Many frameworks already provide ways to modularize large apps, but standardizing a common module structure will bring a level of interoperability between various JavaScript libraries. Block Scoping: Scoping in JavaScript can be a confusing topic for programmers coming from more traditional Object-Oriented languages such as Java or C#. There are basically two scopes in JavaScript: global and function. Until now. With the help of the "let" keyword, ES6 enables the definition of block scopes for variables and functions. Default Parameters: A liked feature of many other languages such as Ruby, the default parameters save endless checking of they've been passed and if they are "undefined". Enhanced Object Literals: There is now a handy expression for property: property assignments and methods can be defined without the "function" keyword.

These are the slides for the short version of my talk, presentation time for those is approx. 30 minutes. A slide set which goes into more detail for the DLR and .NET dynamic features is geared for 90 minute talks incl. demos. -- The slideshare viewer neither features the animations nor all correct fonts of my original PowerPoint 2010 presentation. That's the reason why some of the typography and alignment looks funny/weird. Most slides in the original file are animated so that the audience doesn't get overwhelmed by text and information.

Presented by Gregg Donovan, Senior Software Engineer, Etsy.com, Inc. Understanding the impact of garbage collection, both at a single node and a cluster level, is key to developing high-performance, high-availability Solr and Lucene applications. After a brief overview of garbage collection theory, we will review the design and use of the various collectors in the JVM. At a single-node level, we will explore GC monitoring -- how to understand GC logs, how to monitor what % of your Solr request time is spend on GC, how to use VisualGC, YourKit, and other tools, and what to log and monitor. We will review GC tuning and how to measure success. At a cluster-level, we will review how to design for partial availability -- how to avoid sending requests to a GCing node and how to be resilient to mid-request GC pauses. For application development, we will review common memory leak scenarios in custom Solr and Lucene application code and how to detect them.

Coroutine Flows are the new hot tech in reactive apps. They are very powerful and easy to use at the same time. the best part is they support KMP so we can share our flows with other platforms. In this talk, I go through different flow operators and flow types (ex: SharedFlow, StateFlow, and …). I explain their usage and compare their subtle differences. I also cover how we can leverage Coroutines Flow and its operators to build reactive architectures. No talk should be ended without talking about testing. In this talk, I’ll explain how we can write readable and concise tests with Kotlin Flows that run on all platforms.

JavaScript is becoming more functional nowadays. map and filter - those words mean a lot for modern programming world. Some people think that those are just Array.prototype methods. But Bacon.js also implements map and filter algorithms in their codebase, as well as RxJS. Immutable.js and lazy collections from lodash library do have their own implementations of these algorithms. Transducers is an attempt to describe and implement the essence of these (and lots of other) algorithms, ignoring the context which they are applied to - arrays, lazy collections, event streams or queues/channels.

Sara Mae O’Brien Scott and Tatiana Baquero Cakici, Senior Consultants at Enterprise Knowledge (EK), presented “AI Fast Track to Search-Focused AI Solutions” at the Information Architecture Conference (IAC24) that took place on April 11, 2024 in Seattle, WA. In their presentation, O’Brien-Scott and Cakici focused on what Enterprise AI is, why it is important, and what it takes to empower organizations to get started on a search-based AI journey and stay on track. The presentation explored the complexities of enterprise search challenges and how IA principles can be leveraged to provide AI solutions through the use of a semantic layer. O’Brien-Scott and Cakici showcased a case study where a taxonomy, an ontology, and a knowledge graph were used to structure content at a healthcare workforce solutions organization, providing personalized content recommendations and increasing content findability. In this session, participants gained insights about the following: Most common types of AI categories and use cases; Recommended steps to design and implement taxonomies and ontologies, ensuring they evolve effectively and support the organization’s search objectives; Taxonomy and ontology design considerations and best practices; Real-world AI applications that illustrated the value of taxonomies, ontologies, and knowledge graphs; and Tools, roles, and skills to design and implement AI-powered search solutions.

Enterprise Knowledge’s Urmi Majumder, Principal Data Architecture Consultant, and Fernando Aguilar Islas, Senior Data Science Consultant, presented "Driving Behavioral Change for Information Management through Data-Driven Green Strategy" on March 27, 2024 at Enterprise Data World (EDW) in Orlando, Florida. In this presentation, Urmi and Fernando discussed a case study describing how the information management division in a large supply chain organization drove user behavior change through awareness of the carbon footprint of their duplicated and near-duplicated content, identified via advanced data analytics. Check out their presentation to gain valuable perspectives on utilizing data-driven strategies to influence positive behavioral shifts and support sustainability initiatives within your organization. In this session, participants gained answers to the following questions: - What is a Green Information Management (IM) Strategy, and why should you have one? - How can Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) support your Green IM Strategy through content deduplication? - How can an organization use insights into their data to influence employee behavior for IM? - How can you reap additional benefits from content reduction that go beyond Green IM?

Heather Hedden, Senior Consultant at Enterprise Knowledge, presented “The Role of Taxonomy and Ontology in Semantic Layers” at a webinar hosted by Progress Semaphore on April 16, 2024. Taxonomies at their core enable effective tagging and retrieval of content, and combined with ontologies they extend to the management and understanding of related data. There are even greater benefits of taxonomies and ontologies to enhance your enterprise information architecture when applying them to a semantic layer. A survey by DBP-Institute found that enterprises using a semantic layer see their business outcomes improve by four times, while reducing their data and analytics costs. Extending taxonomies to a semantic layer can be a game-changing solution, allowing you to connect information silos, alleviate knowledge gaps, and derive new insights. Hedden, who specializes in taxonomy design and implementation, presented how the value of taxonomies shouldn’t reside in silos but be integrated with ontologies into a semantic layer. Learn about: - The essence and purpose of taxonomies and ontologies in information and knowledge management; - Advantages of semantic layers leveraging organizational taxonomies; and - Components and approaches to creating a semantic layer, including the integration of taxonomies and ontologies

The Raspberry Pi 5 was announced on October 2023. This new version of the popular embedded device comes with a new iteration of Broadcom’s VideoCore GPU platform, and was released with a fully open source driver stack, developed by Igalia. The presentation will discuss some of the major changes required to support this new Video Core iteration, the challenges we faced in the process and the solutions we provided in order to deliver conformant OpenGL ES and Vulkan drivers. The talk will also cover the next steps for the open source Raspberry Pi 5 graphics stack.
