2. The research community has
lacked the ability to link
researchers and scholars with their
professional activities.
What is the problem?
• Discoverability within and across databases
• Author, grantee, and faculty record management
• Member and meeting management
• Reviewer selection
7 August 2013 2
3. v ORCID is an international, interdisciplinary,
open, not-for-profit, community-driven
organization. We collaborate with researchers
and organizations across the research
community.
v Our core mission is to provide an open registry
of persistent unique identifiers for
researchers and scholars AND to automate
linkages to research works by embedding
identifiers in research workflows.
ORCID Mission

4. What is your ORCID iD?
• Unique and persistent
identifier
• 16-digit number
• Expressed as http URI
• Compatible with ISO
standard

It takes 30 seconds to
register and a few minutes
to link your record to your
works. Registration and
use is easy and free.
Go to orcid.org/register.
8. Benefits to the community
v Unique and persistent iD can be used throughout
career across professional activities and affiliations
v ORCID iD is embedded in works metadata,
independent of platform
v Improved system interoperability – across
discipline, organization, and country means reduced
reporting workload for researchers and better
research data for the community
7 August 2013 8
9. For benefits to be realized…
• Researchers must see benefit of creating ORCID IDs
• Researchers must create or claim an ORCID Account
• Other research information systems – including
universities, member societies and publishers – must
adopt ORCID as a standard person identifier, embed
ORCID iDs, and link back with the ORCID Registry

11. What can editors do?
ü Encourage your authors to
register for an ORCID iD
ü Encourage your organization
to become an ORCID
member and embed iDs
ü Ensure the iD is captured,
validated, embedded, and
deposited
ü Ensure the display standards
are used
ü Contribute your iDeas!

Growth since launch
ORCID has issued over 215,000 identifiers since our
launch in October 2012. Registrations arise from direct
log-in at orcid.org/register and from integration into
journal manuscript submission systems. This summer,
integrations into university systems and grant application
systems will be new sources.

21. Embedding is widespread
ORCID identifiers are being embedded in a wide
variety of research systems and workflows. For
example:
v Manuscript submission
v Grant applications
v Linkage with repositories
v Linkage with other IDs
v University research information systems

25. Grant applications
7 August 2013 25
DOE/OSTI has modified the E-Link processing system and
Announcement Notices (AN) to include ORCID iDs. The ORCID
number will become part of the author information available to users
for search and retrieval in DOE databases such as SciTech Connect.,
and will be associated with products managed by OSTI such as
Science.gov,World Wide Science.org, and the ETDEWEB.
