This document discusses CABI, an intergovernmental organization established in 1910 that provides scientific expertise and information about agriculture and the environment. It notes that CABI publishes 46 abstract journals and other resources, and maintains abstracting and indexing databases. The document outlines CABI's efforts to track the usage and impact of its scientific outputs through new altmetrics tools like Plum Analytics and Kudos, which measure usage of its content across the internet and social media. CABI aims to build a showcase of all its staff's scientific contributions using these tools.

What is an Abstracting & Indexing
database?
An A&I database contains:
● Bibliographic records
● Metadata indexes to aid retrieval
The value of A&I
● Time saving tool

CABI Scientific Outputs & Communication Project
● CABI scientists publish some 100 articles in peer reviewed
journals each year, and are monitored on their outputs and impact
● A new CABI website provides a searchable database of all CABI
output including non peer-reviewed publications and, where
feasible, the full text itself
● Part of a pilot project started last year to capture CABI Scientific
content and to improve how we communicate its existence and
generally increase its exposure via the Internet
● In the project we are also looking at methods for tracking the
usage of this content across the Internet, in order to better enable
CABI to demonstrate impact

New Altmetrics tools
● Part of the project is a Pilot with Plum Analytics www.plumanalytics.com
to add the “Plum Widget” to our new website
● Plum measures Internet “data exhaust” including views and downloads
we well as social media usage such a likes, shares, tweets, blog posts,
review and citations, to capture a complete picture of internet usage
11. KNOWLEDGE FOR LIFE
Improving how we communicate externally about our
content (initial stages of development…)
● We will shortly be starting a pilot project with Kudos
(www.growkudos.com) which is complementary to our activities with
Plum
● Kudos is a web-based resource which is free to authors which aims to
helps researchers, institutions, and publishers to expand exposure to
their published content through social media and other techniques
● Provides a platform for authors to create information (such as lay
summaries or related multimedia) that helps readers filter the growing
quantity of published research;
● To then easily share this information , via social media or email, to
increase discoverability.
● Early results indicated that using Kudos tools to explain and share
research can increase usage by 19%.

Identifiers
● Using the correct identifiers is critical to being able to correctly capture
the appropriate content and for matching it to the right author
● The two altmetrics tools we are working with use several identifiers to do
this, the key ones being
● ORCID
● DOI
● URL

Using these tools….
CABI are looking to eventually build a showcase across all our staff and
their scientific contributions similar to this..
