2. Read the material you have been given and take note of the points to remember. Read the scenario about Josephine and from it, place the strengths you identify as a key worker in to the blank Strengths Assessment. Take some time to randomly hear from the group about what they have identified and recorded. Run through the PowerPoint to demonstrate how Josephine actually did it, along with her goal outcome. 10. Goal Outcome: Priority 1. âI want to keep living where I amâ. Josephine asked to borrow a lawn mower and garden tools from Mr and Mrs Taylor. In return for the loan she mowed the lawn and tended the garden at Mr and Mrs Taylorâs house. Josephine told them that she wanted to stay living in her cottage, and offered to tidy their house too. The Taylorâs were very grateful, and reduced the rent that Josephine paid.
11. Priority 2. âI want to cook like Mrs Taylorâ. Mr and Mrs Taylor insisted that Josephine came for a meal on Sunday nights at the Taylor home. Josephine agreed, but asked if she could arrive early to assist Mrs Taylor with the preparation. Josephine was now in the position to be instructed by Mrs Taylor, and learn to cook from the person she admires
12. Priority 3. âI want to join a rock and crystal clubâ. Josephine had cemented her relationship with Mr and Mrs Taylor so much, that she was relieving Mr Taylor from driving Mrs Taylor to town to do the shopping, Josephine purchased her own groceries at the same time. Josephine had investigated the rock and crystal clubs, and became interested in one in particular. One day whilst in town with Mrs Taylor she organised a meeting with the President of the club and joined. Mr Taylor said Josephine could use the car to attend club meetings on the first Tuesday evening of every month.
13. Priority 4. âI want to buy a carâ. Due to Josephine having her rent reduced she could save towards a car, also, she only had to budget for 6 meals a week instead of 7, which was a further saving. Mr and Mrs Taylor were about to update their car, and offered to sell their current car to Josephine. Instead of saving towards it, Josephine was paying Mr and Mrs Taylor directly to pay the car off. Josephine was able to have a car sooner.

15. Priority 1. âI want to keep living where I amâ. Goal analysis: Although managing financially, Josephine had little money left to herself. Josephine used the strengths identified in domain 3 of the strengths assessment to keep both gardens. Josephine also used strengths from domains 1, 3 and 6 to help in the Taylor house, and had her rent reduced
16. Goal analysis: Priority 2. âI want to cook like Mrs taylorâ. By helping to prepare the meal, and learn from Mrs Taylor, Josephine was able to achieve her goal. Josephine didnât say âI want to learn to cook betterâ, or âI want to join a cooking classâ, she said âI want to cook like Mrs Taylor. Therefore, Mrs Taylor had to be her tutor. Josephine used strengths identified in domains 1, 3, 4 and 6
17. Goal analysis: Priority 3. âI want to join a rock and crystal clubâ. Josephine recognised the opportunity to meet with the President of a club she had investigated. Josephine used the strengths she identified in Domains 3, 4 and 6
18. Goal analysis: Priority 4. âI want to buy a carâ. Josephine had proven to Mr and Mrs Taylor to be helpful, reliable and responsible. Josephine used strengths she had identified in domains 1, 2, 3 and 4
19. Exercise Critique:: It would be rare that such a big and flowing outcome would come from one meeting with a Key Worker. However, consider this: If by being creative in your goal planning sessions with each other (client and key worker) such a big outcome can come from a first strengths assessment, imagine how simple it would be to produce a small outcome from a number of sessions. Naturally, if certain steps donât pan out, then a break down of options to be explored is needed.
