records began has struck the north-east
coast, triggering a massive tsunami. The
8.9-magnitude tremor, which struck about
400km (250 miles) north-east of Tokyo. A
state of emergency has been declared at a
nuclear power plant, where pressure has
exceeded normal levels. Japan was struck
by the most powerful earthquake to hit the
island nation in recorded history and the
tsunami it unleashed.

light as military helicopters plucked
survivors from roofs and carried them

Sendai, a port city in Miyagi, 200 to

10. Typhoon Ondoy, That raged the

reports, 1.9 million people were
inundated with flood water, nearly
380,000 have been evacuated into
schools, churches and other
emergency shelters.
