10.
11. Operation Special Delivery (or OSD), provides trained volunteer doulas for pregnant women whose husbands or partners have been severely
injured or who have lost their lives due to the current war on terror, or who will be deployed, or unable to attend the birth due to military
reasons. The doulas that are volunteering are doing so at a pro bono (free) rate, and are doing so by their own discretion. What is a doula? A
doula is specially trained to give informational, emotional, and physical support to women during childbirth. A doula does not perform medical
tasks, but is trained to provide uninterrupted support to a mother in labor and during birth. Why military moms? OSD believes that no one
should go through childbirth without support, especially the women who are giving birth while their husbands or partners are making such a
great sacrifice for our country and our freedom. You can apply by completing and submitting the Application Form found at
www.operationspecialdelivery.com under "Apply". They cover all 50 states and service all U.S. Military Families including the Reserves and
National Guard. They are also looking for compassionate individuals who are willing to volunteer their time and services to become labor
doulas. For more information, visit www.operationspecialdelivery.com. How to qualify: Your husband or partner is expected to be deployed at
the estimated time of your baby's birth, or has been severely injured or has lost his life due to the current war on terrorism. You are unable to
afford the cost of hiring a private doula. You would otherwise not have reliable and/or sufficient labor support.
Citrus Fruits… Bursting with Healthy Goodness
During the cold winter months, oranges and other citrus fruits are a favorite fresh fruit for many people. Oranges, grapefruit and other citrus
fruits are at their peak of flavor right now. There’s just something about fresh, juicy citrus that makes you feel energized!
Heart Health: Potassium found in citrus fruits helps maintain healthy blood pressure. Folate may help keep homocysteine levels low, which
lowers heart attack risk. The soluble fiber in citrus helps lower cholesterol.
Diabetes: The fiber in citrus, soluble fiber, helps with blood sugar control – important for management of diabetes.
Healthy Weight: Citrus provides water and fiber, which help increase the feeling of fullness, thus helping to control appetite. And because citrus
has a low glycemic load, blood sugars are more steady and appetite is better controlled.
12. Immune System: Citrus is an excellent source of vitamin C, important this time of year to maintain a healthy immune system.
Cancer: Beneficial antioxidants found in citrus fruits are thought to protect against certain types of cancers.
Citrus fruits are picked ripe and ready-to-eat. Choose firm fruit that are heavy for their size, as heavier fruit will have more juice. Oranges can be
stored on the counter for 10 days to two weeks, or in the fridge for up to three weeks.
