Community Life Coed Softball League registration is open until July 18. The season runs July 25 to Sept. 12. Registration is open to all active-duty
Soldiers and Department of Defense ID cardholders
Registration for the intramural flag football season is now open. The 2012 season is scheduled to run Sept. 10 to Nov. 6. “Last year went really
well,” said Renee Satterlee, intramural coordinator, Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation. Last year, I believe we had 28
teams. We only played on one field. This season, if we get as many teams, they’ll possibly play on two fields.” Flag football is a popular sport at
Fort Riley, Satterlee said. “We just had a community life season, which was pretty much open to all (Department of Defense) cardholders, and
that turned out a lot more successful than we thought,” she said. “We were gearing for about six teams at the most, and we had about 14
teams. Flag football team is very popular. I’ve already been getting calls for the upcoming season.” Competing in intramural sports is a good way
to build cohesion within units, Satterlee said. “Any intramural team builds company/unit morale, so there’s always that benefit and getting out
and exercising keeps Soldiers busy,” she said. Teams must have at least seven players and are capped at 18 players. Only active-duty teams may
compete. Coaches meetings are set for 2 p.m. Aug. 7 and 14 at King Field House. Registration will close Aug. 18. For more information, call 785-

12. TAKE STEPS TO PROTECT AGAINST HIGH HEAT: Recent heat waves mean taking extra precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses and serious
injuries. There are several ways to prepare for a heat wave, including staying informed and knowing heat terminology. A heat wave is an
extended period of extreme heat, usually combined with excessive humidity, which includes an abnormal temperature of 10 degrees or higher
for a particular region and can last for several weeks or more. A heat index combines air temperature and relative humidity to express the
apparent temperature or “how hot it actually feels.” Those facing a heat wave should ensure they have a fan or something to circulate air in
extreme heat because many heat-related deaths are attributed to stagnant atmospheric conditions or poor air quality. The following are tips on
what to do during a heat wave:
• Slow down and do not do anything too strenuous.
• Stay inside as much as possible.
• If air conditioning is not available at home, stay on the lowest level of the home because heat tends to rise, or go to a public building
with air conditioning.
• For those staying at home without air conditioning, ensure there is a mechanism, like a fan, to circulate the air.
• Drink lots of water even when not thirsty.
• Avoid alcohol, caffeine and salt.
• Wear loose, light-colored clothing.
• Be aware a power outage or drought can result from a heat wave.
Knowing and recognizing the signs of a heat wave are important to avoid serious damage to one’s health. Keep a lookout for the
following heat emergencies:
• Heat cramps – Muscle spasms and aches from heavy exertion in extreme heat. They are usually the first sign of heat-related
complications.
• Heat exhaustion – A form of mild shock that results from insufficient body fluids because of extreme heat and excessive exercising.
The blood flow to the skin increases, decreasing blood flow to vital organs and raising the body temperature, increasing the risk of a heat stroke.
* Heat or sun stroke – The body’s temperature control system stops working, causing body temperature to rise so high – 103 degrees Fahrenheit
or more – that brain damage or death can occur. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include:
• Often pale with cool, moist skin
• Sweating profusely
• Muscle cramps or pains
• Feeling faint or dizzy
• Headaches, weakness, thirst and nausea
• Elevated core temperature – usually more than 100 degrees Fahrenheit – and increased pulse rate.
Symptoms of heat stroke or sun stroke include:
• Unconsciousness or markedly abnormal mental status, including dizziness, confusion, hallucinations or coma
* Flushed, hot and dry skin, although it may be moist initially from previous sweating or from attempts to cool the person with water)
• Slightly elevated blood pressure at first that drops later
13. • Hyperventilating
• Core temperature of 105 degrees Fahrenheit or more
Anyone who experiences or observes any of the above conditions should seek medical attention immediately. All persons are encouraged to
maintain a basic level of preparedness for all potential hazards. It is encouraged to get an emergency supply kit, make a Family emergency plan
and be informed about what might happen. For additional information, visit Ready Army at www.ready.army.mil; American Red Cross at
