Warren Brush from his IPC10 Conference Talk: Permaculture & Peace (17 sept 2011, Amman, Jordan) "We have gotten really good at designing on the landscape but ..  we still need to be doing work for the people-care ethic It's something we have to really look at in depth in these next 30yrs of the PC movement & it's at the root of peace-making I've seen so many good designs on the ground, all around the world, that were abandoned because the people could not work it out any longer they couldn't figure out how to work with the diversities within their group The People-Care ethic is crucial in how are we going to move forward as a group How do we translate the People-Care ethic into practice, to be most effective? "I suspect that what Stella and Cesar have done to the PeopleCare portion of Permaculture is on par with what Bill Mollison & David Holmgren did to EarthCare" Monica, US Pilot & Student of PDC+++ foto

An expanded PDC in 5 Modules: 1. People Care 2. Design Techniques 3 . Earth Care 4. Energy & EcoTech 5. EcoEconomy ( 6. Transition) which we later discovered was (/ decided to name as) an "Integral PC Curriculum" (the PDC+++) Equivalent to the standard PDC PEOPLE-CARE & ECO-ECONOMY EARTH-CARE & ECO- TECH An advanced PDC & action-learning course
AQAL = All Quadrants All Levels ... Etc. = The Integral Model (Ken Wilber) Permaculture is by DEFINITION an Integral Science .. in theory Although in PRACTICE it too often isn't PEOPLE-CARE & ECO-ECONOMY EARTH-CARE & ECO- TECH DESIGN is the beneficial association of all of these components SOCIAL People, culture , finance, commerce, etc. ABSTRACT time, Ethics, data, Models, etc. SITE Landscape, water, climate, fauna, flora, etc. ENERGY technologies, structures, connections The left or internal quadrants in AQAL The right or external quadrants in AQAL
Good Design fully takes into account ALL quadrants of experience Resources Technologies Systems People's Insides Culture
Unquestioned Individualism & Addiction-Culture (the 'me, me, me' ethic - everything is taken personally, comfort the max. value) The American Dream is STILL the biggest driver Natural systems & their evolution don’t have value by & in themselves They are resources to exploit, & we are separate from them Darwinism and the evolutive casualty (+ all the post-modern mechanism, consumerism include, as technologies to drug us “ Don’t think ” in various ways) We're facing a VERY good design - with the DC Text > & there is now a 'green' version! The PATTERN is the same. There are 'good' & 'bad' people (or people “naturally” more evolved, eg. People that use or don't use "the Law of Attraction") All reductionist science lives here! (it 'reduces' everything to an object, to an "IT") PartyPolitics is a pseudo-system designed to cover up the design of the REAL system operating here ...
Eg. Natural Successions There are a lot more models and combinations – all coherent with the ethics and the vision of a Fair and sustainable world. Good intentions and nice ideals are NOT enough: we must DESIGN well to make it real: MUCH HARDER than talking about it … We have inherited a quite academic way of being, not a very practical way of thinking (& even less of doing) “ Green meme” rejects ‘scientific' & 'theoretical' but both are FUNDAMENTAL to “Yellow meme”

individual collective internal external Current PC is BRILLIANT at designing with these domains: the concrete, physical, visible & least controversial known models. If we give up on the SCIENCE of these domains, we leave a vacuum that gets filled with lots of NewAge pseudo-spirituality Site & Energy components Invisible & Social components PEOPLE-CARE & ECO-ECONOMY EARTH-CARE & ECO- TECH 1) "we need to be doing work for the people-care ethic"
Inter-dependents with the BIG “We” Which People? The conscious effort (DESIGNED!) to embrace ALL the people We get on well with them or not, They seem to us “bugs”, “plagues” or brothers and sisters With the appropriate technologies It’s a way to accelerate the psycho-spiritual growth of everyone The Problem is the Solution 1) "we need to be doing work for the people-care ethic"
It's a strange thing about determined seekers-after-wisdom that, no matter where they happen to be, they'll always seek that wisdom which is a long way off. Wisdom is one of the few things that looks bigger the further away it is. Terry Pratchett , "Witches Abroad" 2) Stop PC being used in the new eco-consumerism
8 years of Action-Learning Programmes (3-5mths) RESULTS: too few (10%) made significant shifts in their internal or external development as PC designers (compared to resources input) OBTAIN a YIELD Although they can make wonderful holidays &/or can be big wake-up calls, we didn't wish to add to an already saturated eco-experience-shopping market (a new eco-consumerism for westerners )
Particularly worrying were getting to observe very closely a lot of people who had studied permaculture already (& most with very reputable teachers) arriving with some un-shakable idea that permaculture is just a series of 'tricks' and techniques they need to accumulate enough of, to be considered a 'PC expert'. . Mostly they had no initiative, original ideas or indeed even a basic ability to think for themselves - & they strongly resisted growing some. Often they defended all sorts of comfort addictions to the end, also (eg. basic ones around food). 2) Stop PC being used in the new eco-consumerism
This is a direct consequence of our wider culture & education system, not due to 'bad' permaculture teaching (& certainly not due to 'bad students' either!) . BUT if we don't design our teaching to neutralize as much as possible of that wider pattern ... then we're in trouble. We're not helping to produce designers , just a new type of "perma-consumer". 2) Stop PC being used in the new eco-consumerism
The main stakes for humanity are not hunger, poverty, sustainability, peace, healthcare, education, economy, natural resources or a host of other issues... But Our capability to buil new social organizations that are able to provide solutions. “ Our main challenge is Collective Intelligence.” Jean Francoise Noubel 3) Increase Collective Intelligence
Ineffectiveness of green movement: We don't design organizations well (we're not taught how) lack of cooperation or fertile connections between movements (inside & outside of PC) not enough 'joining up the dots' happening Lack of collective intelligence means 3) Increase Collective Intelligence
Transmission of PC science as a set of techniques or recipes (for gardening, mostly) or a 'lifestyle choice' in over-developed countries. Permaculture Eg. in the EDE Curriculum Permaculture appears as a tiny SUB-SECTION of the gardening part!

C. (Spain): "All of this (that is happening with the course: classes, my study circle..) is a great stimulus for me to move out of my comfort zone ... in which I am still very hidden. Lucky this lasts one year!! this presentation is in www.EcoEscuela.net (PDC+++ page)
MJ (Spain): "Well, in summary: the best cash I've spent in my life! I love everything I've learned, am playing with what am learning in my immediate surroundings, I feel enriched on a personal level. I thank you for letting this be a free process for each of us & for offering us so many tools for completing the learning to the extent that each of us wants to.
D. (Belgium): "Module 1 was very inspiring for me, though I don't feel like I have grasped all of it yet. The integral model stuff is really brilliant, I use that a lot. Also the group exercises are neat - think/listens, vision support groups and all of that". this presentation is in www.EcoEscuela.net (PDC+++ page)
M. (USA): "I LOVED Module 1 - learned a lot and had plenty of insights along the way. Thank you Stella and Cesar for the Design Portfolio! It is starting to dawn on me the beautiful work you guys do... You are like the teachers I never had, but always wished for. The depth you go to is the depth I longed for in my teenage years... I suspect that what Stella and Cesar have done to the PeopleCare portion of Permaculture is on par with what Bill Mollison & David Holmgren did to EarthCare
D. (Canary Islands) made & up-loaded her ** first ever video ** to say what is so special for her of the course & especially about the Action Learning modality. You can see it on the PDC+++ page on www.EcoEscuela.net this presentation is in www.EcoEscuela.net (PDC+++ page)

IPC10 Presentation: Integral Permaculture Curriculum

  • 13. Good Design fully takes into account ALL quadrants of experience Resources Technologies Systems People's Insides Culture

  • 21. 8 years of Action-Learning Programmes (3-5mths) RESULTS: too few (10%) made significant shifts in their internal or external development as PC designers (compared to resources input) OBTAIN a YIELD Although they can make wonderful holidays &/or can be big wake-up calls, we didn't wish to add to an already saturated eco-experience-shopping market (a new eco-consumerism for westerners )
  • 25. Ineffectiveness of green movement: We don't design organizations well (we're not taught how) lack of cooperation or fertile connections between movements (inside & outside of PC) not enough 'joining up the dots' happening Lack of collective intelligence means 3) Increase Collective Intelligence
  • 26. Transmission of PC science as a set of techniques or recipes (for gardening, mostly) or a 'lifestyle choice' in over-developed countries. Permaculture Eg. in the EDE Curriculum Permaculture appears as a tiny SUB-SECTION of the gardening part!

I love everything I've learned, am playing with what am learning in my immediate surroundings, I feel enriched on a personal level. I thank you for letting this be a free process for each of us & for offering us so many tools for completing the learning to the extent that each of us wants to.

Hinweis der Redaktion

  1. We gave a shorter version of this presentation in IPC10 on the 21st Sept 2011, as part of the 10th Internationanl Permaculture Convergence. This is the longer presentation with notes. We were glad to hear Warren say this during his presentation at the Conference a few days before, because it's precisely what we thought some 8years ago, when we founded a node of the Permaculture Academy in great part because we believed that a modernized PDC Curriculum should be taught, now that the basics (mostly EarthCare) of Permaculture are more common knowledge.
  2. This is the plan for this presentation. Just before finishing to prepare it (which we did with the help of the students on the course) Chiara said "make sure you insist that this is a course for designing sustainable societies", and Jon wrote back saying "yes, Amen". So we've added this to the title. Hopefully this presentation will make clearer why we make that distinction..
  3. We hope with this presentation (as we do with all our work) to do this, what Dana Meadows (great system-thinker & a major hero of ours whom we affectionately call "The Mother of Integral Permaculture" (the Father is Howard Odum). "Everything we know is only a model"... and we believe that very good designers are basically highly model-literate: they see patterns, and can play with them. This is something that can be taught ... but very much isn't, in our current culture (for very good reasons: we'd quickly re-design everything, and much more effectively) Being in a very individualistic (even narcissistic) culture also means that we are often much more interested to personalities than principles, and to appearances rather than content. This makes good debate about mental models quite difficult, as people take things very personally especially when their most cherished models are questioned. We're very keen however, to have our models questioned, and we present them here in that spirit of open enquiry. And we teach all of our students to not believe anything we say: go out there and test every model we teach you for yourself, and report back please: if there are better ones, more useful ones, more complete ones, and especially more practical ones ... we want to know them!
  4. The theme of IPC10 is "Water for Life, Water for Nature". What is interesting for us is that water is also the symbol of emotion, the unconscious, of our imagination & creativity... and we thin that it is mainly because of our lack of skill in designing with this part of human experience & needs, that we are in fact destroying the physical base of our planet. Humans live by stories. Our whole lives are basically stories being played out, so the story is the basic meta-design we do all of our other designs inside of. The more we are conscious of this, the easier it is to change the story, if we don't like where it is leading. And more and more people are waking up now to the fact that we've all been playing (mostly unwittingly) in a dangerous story, as a society, especially in the West (or the 'over-developed north'). We framed this course as a journey - this is our story. Each student has their own berth on this magical ship, which is sailing along side the Titanic of our current society. The butterfly ship is a container for learning how to design a society that will not sink, that is solar-powered and much, much more beautiful, inspiring & just than the present one. We meet on deck and stop off to visit many lands (the modules of the course) and to pick up new people who want to sail with us (anyone can join us at any time). A few weeks ago we decided to take a short de-tour (between Module 2 & 3) to the Convergence in Jordan. So here we are. (the students co-design the course with us and we're very flexible in where we go and how fast, etc.)
  5. So ... who is 'we'?
  6. There are hundreds if not thousands of brilliant minds behind this course, & these two are the ones who worked to unite them into one amazing super-course. Mostly it is our mentors and s/heroes we thank for the very exciting content of this course, (you will see some of them in slide 18) and it is through our practical work & extended study that we have sifted which actually work best in practice and which not. You can see our full profiles in the EcoEscuela.net page (& in the Chaordic PC Institute). We have worked closely together over 8yrs now, although we live in opposite sides of Spain. Both of us are social activists and permaculture designers who have worked extensively on grass-roots community projects. Stella designed & coordinated one of the first recorded community transition initiatives (15yrs before the movement sprouted, in 1995 in Inner London, UK) and César has been busy creating an eco-village for many years also. Both have extensive experience in facilitation and in designing all sorts of things, from smallish gardens, farms to bigger organizational structures.
  7. But these are the central people of our PDC+++ course: here you see some of the first intake of students, the brave pioneers who are trying out the PDC in this new format for the first time: much more extended in time (one year duration), in action-learning format (they have to do this in practice in their own communities as we go), and we encourage them to learn the best way there is: by teaching. So we have helped four of them (see the purple dots with numbers) to design their study-circles in Integral Permaculture, (the numbers refer to how many people, more or less, they have in their groups). Clockwise from top left: Chiara in Spain, Aldana in Argentina & Diego & Carla in Belgium (different cities). The people next to the blue dots are currently designing their study circles. So in practice there are somewhere between 25 and 50 people studying with us, directly or indirectly ... and it's still very early days (20weeks into the first course)
  8. Apart from doing our own - quite demanding - home designs & projects, we've been pioneering a great deal with this course
  9. Because we have so much on ... we've been keen to multi-function and mini-max as much as possible. And so this is quite possibly the most economical PC course on the planet at the moment: not only don't the students have to spend a penny on travel or accommodation (unless they want to go do some extra experience in any of our projects or those of our colleagues), but they also get far more for their time & money than in any other setting. But it's also totally up to them how well they take advantage of the big resource that is put at their disposal (and from day 1 we emphasize that pro-activity is important in making full use of this opportunity)
  10. The curriculum is in 5 modules (6th optional - for those who go on to the Diploma) and the traditional PDC maps directly on to our Modules 3 & 4 (the EarthCare & Energy& EcoTech modules). However we also require that people take some of the modules 2 & 5 classes and that their design reflect some consideration in all parts of the full curriculum (the e-book we're collating make a great deal of learning materials available free for anyone on the web). We were teaching this curriculum from 2003, and it was one of our students that, on coming across Ken Wilber (and his Brief History of Everything) came to tell us that we were teaching a very integral curriculum. We hadn't made the connection ourselves at the time, but in fact when we consciously drew the two 'worlds' together (the permaculture world and the integral world), a lot more things started to make sense. They obviously complement each other brilliantly..
  11. This is the briefest and most accurate definition of what permaculture design is. And it's clearly an integral definition. The components roughly map onto the 4 quadrants of the integral model.
  12. And this is how they map, more or less (it isn't a precise correspondence, but we amused ourselves greatly in wondering how much quicker Ken Wilber might have come to his quadrants model if he'd studied permaculture ..
  13. All 4 quadrants of experience exist whether we're conscious or not of them at the time, and they are part of whatever design we're involved with, whether or not they are planned by design or default. The Destructo-Culture is 'sticky' (difficult to budge, despite being horrendously wasteful and un-just) because it does have very strong designs in all 4 quadrants - that support & complement each other perfectly, so keeping each other in place, in a strange way, although they are all, separately, more than shaky in their logic ... This is just a quick sketch of some examples of the models that operate in each section (there are many more)
  14. And this is what we could be designing with more consciously as permaculture designers. But we often only design with our attention on the upper left quadrant: the exterior individual models. The whole course is essentially about explaining what this is all about so won't go into it here: hopefully it makes you curious enough to go look at the materials in more details: they can be found on www.PermaCultureScience.org (the e-book we're compiling - the first rough draft won't be finished until May 2012 probably..)
  15. ... run out of steam here for writing the notes ... hope to come back & finish them at some other time!
  16. We are not (yet) a great example of 'caring for people' in our own movement: mostly we care for the people we agree with, who are like us. Very evident patterns we can see all over: the "Old Boys Club" (+ occasional token woman) is still the basic organizational pattern. Just look around - eg. the list of speakers of the Conference - and ask "what does this pattern say"? (if it was 9 expert women speaking one after the other and no men... we would call it a 'women's conference'.
  17. Some observation of the wider movement: (which support the results observed - instead of challenging those patterns, we pander to them) some of the most popular "permaculture" things you can do these days (in the West, currently) Get others to pay you to build more buildings on your property (& call it an eco-building / permaculture course) Especially sexy at the moment is using "natural materials", eg. clay + straw - to create more of the buildings that we don't really need. Some very uncomfortable questions (given climate-change, the urgent need to build soil & restore vital eco-systems ...) DO we really need more buildings? Is this a priority anywhere? How sane is it to extract the most basic ingredients of soil - earth & biomass - by petrol-fueled agriculture, to then design to stop them from rotting for as long as possible - so depriving billions of vital soil micro-organisms of their basic housing & food?
  18. EDE = Ecovillage Design Education (but despite the name has no 'design' in it to speak of)
