Fishing
For many years, North Mayo has
been regarded a key destination
for angling enthusiasts around
the world who are attracted to
the region’s phenomenal offering
to those that wield the rod for
sport. The region’s principal town
of Ballina is officially designated
Salmon Capital of Ireland,
reflecting the quality of angling
and fly-fishing available on its
River Moy. Indeed much of North
Mayo and West Sligo is drained
by this river and its tributaries
which comprise Ireland’s most
prolific salmon waters. The area
also boasts many bountiful lakes
with great brown trout stocks.
The Mayo North area also caters
for the sea angler with top-class
boat and shore fishing available
and up to 34 species waiting to be
hooked in its coastal waters.
Happy Fishing!

Seven Wonders
of Mayo North
1. Céide Fields
Located in Ballycastle, the Céide
Fields is the oldest Neolithic site
in the world dating back to the
Stone Age over 5,000 years ago
and includes tombs, stone-walled
fields and houses. Visitors to the
Céide Fields can enjoy audio-
visual and guided tours of the
dramatic cliffs and bogs.
2. Downpatrick Head
Also located in beautiful
Ballycastle, Downpatrick Head is
a discovery point on the famous
Wild Atlantic Way driving route.
It features a blow-hole, historic
church ruins and offers breath-
taking views of the Atlantic, the
Belderrig cliffs (as high as the
cliffs of Moher) and the Dún Briste
sea stack.
3. The Abbey’s
Moyne Abbey, Rosserk Abbey,
Rathfran Abbey and the
Monasteries of the Moy are all
located in close proximity to
each other and showcase the
spectacular quality of Christian
sites in the area.
4. The Round Tower
Situated in the historical town
of Killala and surrounded by
the abbeys on one side and
Kilcummin pier in neighbouring
Lacken, this town is a seaside
gem. The tower is the main
attraction, but there are also
strong links to Irish history
through the French landings of
1798.
5. Belleek Woods
Situated along the banks of the
River Moy lies Belleek Woods,
a 1000 acre woodlands which
holds the title of one of the largest
urban forests in Europe. It is a
peaceful haven of up to 6 miles of
natural forest pathways along the
banks of the River Moy. Belleek
Castle is the home of the Marshall
Doran Collection and is located in
the centre of the woodland.
6. Nephin Mountain and
neighbouring Pontoon
Mayo North possesses an
amazing variety of landforms,
scenery, history and heritage
and is a haven for hillwalkers
and lovers of the great outdoors.
Among the most interesting of
Connaught’s mountains is Nephin,
which has been climbed and
revered for generations. Nephin
is a majestic mountain, which
dominates the landscape for
miles around; snow-capped in the
winter and dominated by colour in
the summer.
7. The Jackie Clarke
Collection
It is the most important private
collection of Irish history material
in public hands, comprising
over 100,000 items spanning
400 years. It includes artefacts
associated with Theobald Wolfe
Tone, letters from Michael Collins,
Douglas Hyde, Michael Davitt and
O’Donovan Rossa. It also contains
rare books, proclamations, posters,
political cartoons, pamphlets,
handbills, works by Sir John
Lavery, maps, and personal items
from Leaders of the 1916 Rising.
