There are 6 billion mobile subscriptions globally, &
    1 billion smartphones in use



                                                                 The first number is from the ITU (note
                                                                 that many people have more than one
                                                                 phone so this is not 6 billion people
                                                                 with mobiles), and the second comes
                                                                 from Strategy Analytics who estimate
                                                                 that by the end of Q3 2012 there were
                                                                 1.038 billion smartphones in use

Google is activating 1.3m Android devices a day




                                                                             Google has revealed that it is activating
                                                                             1.3 million Android devices a day, up
                                                                             from 1 million a day in June. In
                                                                             September the install base was 480m
                                                                             users, so it must be over 500 million by
                                                                             now

Each new version of the iPhone sells as much as
    all previous versions combined

                                                           the reviews and buzz sell Apple

Smartphones influence 6% of UK in-store
    purchases



    Almost half of the UK’s smartphone
    users have used their phones to
    research product information before or
    during a shopping visit, which means
    that smartphones influence 6%, or over
    £15 billion in UK sales. Slightly
    simplistic working, but still an
    interesting figure

Mobile accounts for 18% of Domino’s Pizza’s UK
     digital sales



     Domino’s Pizza are pioneers in digital
     media, as early adopters technology
     like a mobile apps and QR code. It
     seems to be paying off; in the UK over
     55% of its sales are from digital
     channels

OwnFone – a cheap, basic, personalised phone



     OwnFone is a very basic phone that is
     capable of receiving calls, but only dialling
     up to 12 preset numbers, that you
     programme when you by it. It’s intended
     as an emergency phone, or to give to
     kids, and the battery lasts for up to a year
     on one charge if not used

     made her the best selling author of all
     time on Amazon UK; yes, she’s sold
     even more than JK Rowling. Taking
     sales from bookshops into account too,
     the first Fifty Shades of Grey is the best
     selling book of all time in the UK, a
     testament to how quickly books &
     eBooks can sell

     Instagram did




     Both Instagram & Fifty Shades became

     Jeff Bezos of Amazon says that "we
     want to make money when people use
     our devices, not when they buy our
     devices", and that they will make no
     money from the sale of the devices.
     It’s the clearest statement yet that the
     Kindle is all about the content that goes

Crowdsourcing site Quirky produced 15 new
     iPhone 5 accessories in 7 days



                                                           Making physical products can be nearly
                                                           as fast as creating digital content.
                                                           Users of the Crowdsourcing site Quirky
                                                           started work on a range of iPhone 5
                                                           products (mainly cases and mounts)
                                                           and had them on sale via Fab.com

     market

                                                       September. Other stats included 219
                                                       billion photos uploaded, and 17 billion
                                                       location-tagged posts, including
                                                       checkins

     every day



                                                            Is Facebook planning a search product?
                                                            It’s easy to see why it might – currently
                                                            it gets over a billion search queries per
                                                            day, and one Facebook financial ‘Holy
                                                            Grail’ might be to try to answer these
                                                            using links and results from friends in
                                                            the algorithm

     Microblogging is huge in China, where

                         tweet’ before – it’s well known for

                         in a physical store for the first time in
                         London in September to launch their
                         Special K Cracker Crisps. Customers
                         had to post a tweet with the hashtag
                         inside the shop to claim a free packet

Facebook ads work for Play.com
