8. Installation of Moodle Before you do anything create an account at Moodle.org and read the support section FIRST Download latest stable release, see http://moodle.org Follow the download instructions Install it, best to do this with your network technician close by If you are a really worried try downloading a standalone USB installation and familiarise yourself with this firsthttp://www.chsoftware.net/en/mowes/mowesportable/mowes.htm
9. Create Course Categories It is a good idea to use terms that everyone is familiar with and which match your student handbooks . By subject area By year level groupings Science Senior School Chemistry Science Physics Humanities Biology Middle School Science Humanities
10. Creating Courses 1. Need list of subjects, who teaches them and when, usually the master time table. 2. Names of teachers and the codes used for them when they are on student time tables. 3. You need to know the class and teacher codes that appear on student time tables Enforce a naming standard, very important for reducing the time taken to enroll large numbers of studentsref: http://docs.moodle.org/en/Upload_users
11. Creating Groups (Classes) within courses Each course (Year 12 Chemistry) has one or more classes Each class has a teacher and students In Moodle think of the classes as groups within a course Give each group an enrolment key, use the subject and line number that students have on their time table as the enrolment code. "What’s the enrolment code Miss?" “Check your time table, what class are you in now... well that’s the enrolment code“ Confused? Ref: http://docs.moodle.org/en/Groups_FAQ
12. Enrolment Codes Use the subject and line number that students have on their time table as the enrolment code. "What’s the enrolment code Miss?" “Check your time table, what class are you in now... well that’s the enrolment code"
13. Assigning Roles Who can do what, where Ref: http://docs.moodle.org/en/Assign_roles
14. Assigning Roles Who can do what, where Ref: http://docs.moodle.org/en/Assign_roles Guest role (look don’t touch) Authenticated user (default role) Student role (self explanatory) Non-editing teacher role (can’t change content) Teacher role Course creator role Administrator role
15. Creating Accounts Create teacher accounts manually Use LDAP or similar technology to link students accounts, you need to achieve one user name & password for network and Moodle access
16. Uploading Learning Content Keep you upload limits small, I set it around 8 Meg But why, space is inexpensive? Otherwise your Moodle will blow out and you will encourage bad content creation and management practices If you can link to external content “YouTube” or podcast do it. But what happens if something changes and the link dies? Keep your teaching and content fresh, check your links
17. Getting teachers to use your LMS Did I Mention… Training, Training, Training Let’em at it Find the keen teachers and let'em rip 1 to 1 support Find the stumblers and give one to one support
18. Getting teachers to use your LMS Show Case Success Get the keen to present what they have done Nurture enthusiasm Look after your stumblersone by one, not all at once this could burn you out.
19. Getting teachers to use your LMS Once the stumblers have learnt to go forward move their enquires to the keen. Promote, Promote... "Should see (stumblers) Moodle their getting right into it!"
20. What to expect in the first year... Upload /Download approach Mainly working as a content repository it will not look pretty during the first year support your keen users (one on one help!)
