Guidelines To Help Your Remote
Workers Experience Success
Not everyone is meant to work from home. Some need the
constant guidance of a supervisor while others are more
disciplined and self-motivated to work independently from
home. Here are some guidelines to help you set up a
successful remote working environment.

Set Realistic Goals
Working from home is much more difficult as there are many more distractions that can interfere
with your work. It’s easy for someone that is not disciplined to get distracted by the television,
phone calls, other household members, etc. Before allowing an employee to work from home, first
see how they work at the office, by giving them a little more independence and clear goals. Do they
stick to deadlines? Are they self-motivated to work even when you are not on their case? If they
have problems completing tasks and projects on time at the office, then they may not be suitable to
work remotely.
It’s crucial to keep in contact with your remote workers and help build relationships between office
workers and remote workers. This will give the employees working from home a sense that they are
still part of a team. Establishing this connection will allow them to feel connected to you, to
colleagues and to the work at hand. A great idea would be to setup an application like Slack that can
provide a platform for colleagues to chat in groups or one-to-one, send files and attachments and
remain in the know.
What’s important to remember is that even though these employees do not have to commute to
work and can have more hours in the day to get work done, does not mean that they should be
working longer hours, completing more projects in a day than usual and have unrealistic deadlines.
By setting clear goals and reasonable timelines, your remote workers will be more productive and
feel more appreciated.
Bottom line, to have a successful team working remotely, you should first see if they are
good candidates for the job. Then it would be a good idea to support this remote team as
best you can by setting reasonable goals and by creating solid connections between
them and the office.
