Leiderdorp is a town of 26,000 inhabitants located near Leiden in the densely populated Randstad area of the Netherlands. It was originally a Roman settlement and grew into a farming and castle community over subsequent centuries. While still surrounded by water and polders, Leiderdorp's expansion is threatened by increasing development as it serves as a commuter town for nearby Leiden, having seen most of its growth after World War 2.
