Why do Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender People
Need to be Classified as a Protected Class?
In a 2007 study by the Michigan Fair
Housing Centers to explore the level of
discrimination experienced by LGBT
people, 30% of same-sex couples
reported being treated differently from
similarly situated heterosexual couples.
Specifically, they were:
l
• Verbally harassed
• Shown less desirable units
• Quoted higher rates
• Outright refused the opportunity to
rent a property

facilities as a top concern.
In a summit held in April of
2011, The LGBT Older
Adult Coalition of Michigan
found that housing was the
topmost concern among
soon-to-be retired LGBT
older adults.
