Camp Lejeune Initiatives

Solid Waste Minimization and Recycling:
1. Humanitarian Assistance Program (HAP): On-going book donation program- MCB CL
has shipped 1000 lbs of books to foreign countries.
2. Concrete Crushing and Reutilization: MCB CL instituted a no-cost concrete crushing
operation to be reused in Base construction projects. In 2010, 21,270 tons of concrete
was crushed and reused.
3. Wood Grinding: MCB CL: wood grinding operation- wood, crates pallets tree debris
and yard diverted from the landfill and burned for energy or composted.
4. Electronic Recycling : Annual Electronics Recycling Event for base personnel This
year, 10,000 pounds of electronics were recycled

Camp Lejeune Initiatives

Water Conservation:
5. All new construction requires low flow toilets, urinals, faucets and showerheads and
when possible retrofits existing buildings.
6. Maintains long-term water distribution system leak detection and repair program with
periodic leak surveys and repairs and maintains leaking faucets
7. Installing, reading, and maintaining a network of meters to allow for water tracking.
8. Develops and implements public awareness and education programs for all
environmental compliance.

Stormwater:
9. Continues to follow Coastal County requirements for stormwater, includes EISA
Stormwater language in MILCONS and requires the use of Low Impact Development
(LID) Best Management Practices (BMPs) when possible.
10. Implementing master (stormwater) permits that will cover entire watersheds and
require treatment through LIDs when possible.

1. Recyclers for pallets, drums and mattresses.
2. Small Business furniture repair – repair government furniture that is to be landfill.
Some of the desk and chairs need minor repairs.
