7. OUR
HISTORY
In the course of its history, The
University of Northampton has changed
significantly – not only in the number
of students it teaches, but also in the
range and level of courses offered and in
the quality of performance in nationally
benchmarked assessments of both
teaching and research.
Formed as Nene College in 1975 through the merger of Northampton’s Colleges
of Education, Technology, and Art and Design, the College expanded rapidly. The
first department of Business & Management was established at this time. In 1977,
when the Leathersellers College was transferred from London to Northampton, it
became the national centre of education and training for the leather industry.
In 1993 the College incorporated the St Andrew’s School of Occupational Therapy
followed in 1994 by the Sir Gordon Roberts College of Nursing and Midwifery to
form the basis for the School of Health.
During the 1990’s, as first Nene College then University College Northampton
(1999), student numbers rose from around 4,000 to 9,000. In 1993 the College was
granted taught degree awarding powers from the Privy Council and in 2005 was
awarded full university status with research degree awarding powers becoming The
University of Northampton. We now have over 13,000 full and part time students,
with many from overseas, accessing courses from the Schools of Arts, Business,
Education, Health, Social Sciences, and Science & Technology. The University
operates from two campuses in Northampton and is investing millions in its estates
and facilities in order to ensure students and staff have the best possible learning
and research environment in the future.

“While having been in various management
positions in a number of countries over the
last 15 years I have never gained any formal
management qualification. On my recent
appointment it was suggested that I enrol on
the CMS to remedy this situation. A colleague
completed the course at The University of
Northampton last year and after discussing
this as an option with him I chose to join the
course.
The course is perfect for anyone who has not
undertaken any formal education for a number
of years and eases you back into study. I
have found having the opportunity to discuss
real events in a “safe” environment and the
interaction with other participants particularly
helpful and stimulating.
I would not hesitate to recommend this
course to anyone looking to gain foundation
knowledge of general management principles
or as a step to either the DMS or all the way to
the MBA.”
Darren Stenlake

“Studying part time for a professional
qualification in Marketing helped me quickly
progress from Assistant level to Officer grade,
opening up a wide choice of job opportunities
for me to apply for along with a major step-up
in salary. The tutors at the University were very
supportive and encouraging throughout the
programme.”

SPEAKERS
Gary Hoffman
CEO of Northern Rock
and formerly Group Vice
Chairman, Barclays plc
What is it that turns a competent
manager into a great leader?
Gary Hoffman was welcomed to
Northampton Business School to
try and answer that very question in
front of an audience of students and
academic staff.
Gary focused on the key themes of
colleagues, customers, company and
community. “A leader should create
and champion their organisation’s
vision, and convey an inspired sense
of purpose behind it” he commented.
“They also serve as champions of
customer and colleagues, creating
commitment and trust through clear
direction and honest feedback on
performance.”
Gary’s career with Barclays spans
24 years and includes many notable
achievements including setting up
both Barclays telephone and internet
banking services.
Allan Fraser Rush
Managing Director of
TEQUILA London
“I am completely delighted that The
University of Northampton have the
faith in me to make me a visiting
Professor”.
“The simple reason for me involving
myself more with the academic
programme at Northampton Business
School is to bring to the students a
little of the real world. NBS does a
great job in teaching the theoretical
base of the discipline and trys to bring
as much of the real world into the
courses as possible, but the reality is
that it is different out in ‘Agency land’.
We use our own phraseology, we have
our own processes and potentially
for a young graduate entering our
business, can be quite terrifying.
Without the programme we have in
place students could only imagine
what life was like in an agency. What
we have done is shown them. Not
only how we work, but how we think,
the disciplines we cover and how we
work with one another. All of which will
better position them to have a great
chance of securing the marketing role
they want.”
Claire Young
Apprentice 2008 finalist
and business woman
The University of Northampton’s
Business School was delighted to host
a guest lecture by Apprentice 2008
finalist and business woman Claire
Young. Claire addressed an audience
of Northampton Business School
students, staff and University Alumni
about her career, how to start your
own business and what it was like to
be in the boardroom with Sir Alan
Sugar!
Claire, who runs her business Elegant
Venues from Northamptonshire,
commented:
‘’Since starting a business in Daventry,
I have been keen to get involved in
the local Northants community, so
I was delighted when the University
contacted me to visit and talk to the
students at Northampton Business
School. After thoroughly enjoying
my university experience, I find it
refreshing to take a couple of hours
out of the ‘business world’ to step
back into education and appreciate
the grounding it gave me. I work
with universities across the country
on a regular basis and the quality
of Northants students I met during
the event really stood out - they were
articulate, proactive and passionate
- I have no doubt they will go on to
succeed!’’

full University status and Research
Degree awarding powers.
His presence offered an excellent
endorsement for the work of
Northampton Business School and
our role in the business community
in Northamptonshire and beyond.
“If we are to keep the role of
universities at the value added, quality
end of the game, businesses should
use and benefit from the facilities of
their university - commission work and
research.”

offers special entry rules for mature students
(aged over 21).
Case study
“The University of Northampton offered
ACCA tuition at a time that was convenient
for both me and my employer.
The University seemed to be well structured
and organised and I have to say out of all
the studying I have done in my life, this had
definitely been my favourite to date. This
would I am sure be partly down to the fact
I was at a very focused stage in my life, and
was keen to move forward and further my
career, but also down to the lecturers I had.
The course itself was set out with plenty of
time to cover the subject leaving a good
portion of revision time at the end, which I
find so important. I found that I was going
into my exams feeling confident..
The University also did that little bit extra
than some places, for example holding an
awards event each year to recognise the
hard work and success of their students. I
was lucky enough to receive an award for
one of my grades in the first year, and this
opened up an opportunity for me to speak
to a senior partner of Grant Thornton, one
of the leading accountancy firms.
I was lucky enough to get offered a job with
them and I can now see my career ahead
of me. Without a doubt this opportunity
for me came from The University of
Northampton and the lecturers working
there, giving me the grounding and advice
I needed to help me progress through my
career as an accountant.
I have nothing but good words to say
about the University and would happily
recommend it to anyone thinking of
studying there.”

15. MSc ACCOUNTING AND FINANCE from
ACCA/CIMA/AIA/CIPFA/ICAEW
Accounting
Fully qualified professionals in Accounting can Top up to
a Masters degree provided their qualification has been
undertaken by examination.
CourseAims
The degree is designed to enhance your
existing professional qualification through
exposure to strategic, financial and
management issues. Student will be expected
to complete a dissertation that can be related
to issues in the work place or more generally
on topics that are currently topical in the
finance research domain. The management
of change is an essential area of expertise
for many people seeking high level careers in
the professions, commerce or academia. This
course will provide students with a theoretical
background and applied knowledge at
Masters level. It is designed to enhance
intellectual and transferable skills, including
presentation, research, analysis and appraisal.
On completion, postgraduate students will
be conversant with theoretical issues in
Management and finance, and be able to
apply theory and practice to real issues faced
in day-to-day operations.
Course Content
All students take modules in Managing
Strategic Change and a dissertation
(incorporating a research methods
programme). Delivery is either on campus or
by distance learning. For those taking the Top
up programme delivered by distance learning
individual students need to be prepared to
study independently using CD ROM’s and/or
web based material with the support of a tutor
utilising phone and email. Supervision of the
dissertation is therefore available at a distance
or in person for those within travelling distance
of Northampton.
Managing Strategic Change
Particular regard within this module will be
upon abilities and skills to conceptualise the
strategic development of organisations – to
recognise key strategic issues and to enhance
abilities to manage strategic change. Strategic
thinking is about processes of strategic
management and change, and the ability
to take holistic and long term views of the
organisation in the context of its environment
is an important attribute of a senior manager.
The strategies adopted must have regard for
the internal capabilities, power structures
and culture of the organisation as well as
the external opportunities and uncertainties
exposed by environmental analysis.
Dissertation
An important feature of a Master’s
programme is the development of a student’s
ability to work independently. The dissertation
module therefore starts with the introduction
to research methods and provides knowledge
of and insight into the main research tools
available.
The subject area for the dissertation will
be in the area of accountancy and finance
and can be directly related to work or on
a more theoretical topic of your choosing.
Examples include accounting and ethics,
auditing, corporate governance, internal
control systems, risk management and market
efficiency. Students are required to identify a
topic of their choosing, with guidance from the
subject tutor, of sufficient breadth and depth to
undertake research and produce a dissertation
of approximately 15,000 words.
Assessment
Coursework and dissertations.
Entry Requirements
Full Professional qualifications such as ACCA,
CIMA, AIA, CIPFA, ICA or equivalent finance
qualifications such as IFS, The qualification
must be obtained by formal assessment and
candidates should have three years’ relevant
work based experience.
Approximately 12 months part time or distance learning
13
16. PART TIME BUSINESS PROGRAMME
• Foundation Degree Business (FdA)
• BA (Hons) Business and Management
Business
CourseAims
The programme is designed to provide a
means for students who are in full time
employment to study towards a variety of
business qualifications. Employers emphasise
the need for their employees to possess a
range of business skills and to understand
issues across the varied functional areas
of business. Modules have been chosen to
specifically meet these needs.
In addition to the increasingly multi
disciplinary nature of work, many employees
are encouraged to take an active role in the
development of their careers. Work-based
learning modules help in this regard by
allowing students to reflect upon their
learning within the workplace; they also
facilitate the academic recognition of tasks
and projects completed at work.
All modules on the FdA Business are
work-place orientated, ensuring that students
develop a vocationally relevant understanding
of business and acquire the essential skills
required within commerce and industry in the
21st century. The Top up degree has a mix
of vocational and more academic modules,
consistent with the expectations of a UK
honours degree.
Course Content
Students who wish to study to honours degree
level can achieve this in four or five years. They
should enrol first on the Foundation degree in
Business (FdA). The Foundation degree involves
three years of study, with four modules per
year. There are a maximum of two taught
modules per year to ensure that students only
need to attend on one night per week.
Successful students from the FdA can
then progress to the BA (Hons) Business &
Management Top up course. This takes the
form of distance learning modules, although
students may substitute modules from the
full-time programme if they wish and are able
to attend University.
We recognise that there are many demands
on the time of ambitious people, therefore,
individuals who have successfully completed
the first two years of the FdA and who do not
feel able to commit to three years of study
can accept a “fallback” award of the HNC in
Business.
It is also possible to register for a smaller
number of modules each year and build to an
award over an extended period.
All modules are subject to student demand
and staff availability.
Mode ofAttendance
During the first three years (FdA) students
must attend The University of Northampton
for approximately three hours per week for 25
weeks. In addition students are also advised,
on average, to set aside at least two additional
evenings or half days per week for working
through distance learning materials, work
based assessments and completing reading
and assessments relating to the taught
modules.
Currently, attendance on the Foundation
degree is as follows:
Year 1 Monday evening
Year 2/3 Tuesday evening
These dates are subject to confirmation.
Workshops (approx. two per term) in relation
to work-based learning modules will be
scheduled on your normal day of attendance.
The Business and Management Top up
course is either all distance-learning or a
hybrid of distance-learning modules and
modules from the full-time course. This may
be completed in “standard” mode over
15 months or in “flexible” mode over 27
months. Normally, it involves the completion
of four distance-learning modules (Strategic
Management, Accounting and Finance for
Managers, Marketing Management and
Critical Perspectives on Management). In
addition, students must complete a Business
Dissertation which requires a significant
amount of independent study, with advice and
support from your supervisor.
3-5 years part time (the HNC Business is available after 2nd year)
14
17. Business
Assessment
Coursework, exams and work based projects.
Career Opportunities
As well as career progression for those already
in a job, the programme provides a very good
basis for a range of careers requiring a general
management perspective. The Honours degree
is increasingly recognised as a requirement
for promotion to middle management and,
thereafter, onto postgraduate study and senior
management.
Entry Requirements
Dependent on level of entry. Please enquire
for further details.
Case study
‘Attending the course has been easy and
convenient and I’ve met a great group of
people to share ideas with. The learning has
been challenging but interesting and has
already been put to good use within my work,
increasing my confidence in my capabilities
and enabling me to take on new projects.’
Stephanie Westwood
FdA Business
The University of Northampton offers a part time business programme route enabling
you to study up to Honours degree level. The Foundation Degree in Business (FdA
Business) is a three year award which consists of a carefully selected sequence of
business and management taught modules, involving attendance on one evening a
week. These taught modules are combined with work-based and distance learning
modules, and the award will greatly assist you in developing your career to its
maximum potential, whatever your area of work. Students may then progress to the
award of the BA (Honours) Business and Management Top up (BAM). This is a
distance learning award which can be spread over 15 or 27 months (depending upon
work commitments).

21. Computing & IT
19
IT Service Management is at the core of an organisation’s
IT activity. Our programme was the winner of itSMF
Innovation Award in 2008 for providing the first ITSM
course in the world. It is underpinned by industry
standards such as ITIL®v3 and Prince2®. Accreditation is
given to students with ITIL ® qualifications and modules
are aligned to Skills for the Information Age (SFIA).
The programme can be offered as a fully integrated
distance learning programme worldwide.
CourseAims
This course has been designed to meet the
need for competent and qualified staff that can
enable organisations to maximise the value of
IS and IT Services. It is suitable for any student
wishing to move into IT Service Management. It
covers processes, security, governance, quality,
project and change management and the
strategic implementation of IS.
It is recognised that information is the most
important strategic resource that any
organisation has to manage, and that this
information is not managed or exploited if IT
systems and services are below the required
quality. The emergence of a global body – itSMF
- which through its membership gathers shared
experiences and participates in the continuous
development and promotion of best practice
and standards underpins the importance of
IT Service Management and the quality of
staff employed within this profession. This
course addresses the need to understand the
responsibilities, components and opportunities
for IT Service Management which has skill
shortages in the modern world of business
computing and service delivery. The rationale for
the course is based on the recognition that the
effectiveness of all IT Services is a vital aspect to
the prosperity of any organisation. The course
embraces best practice from leading service
providers, and by continual reassessment,
ensures all material is relevant to today’s
computing and management expectations.
Special Course Features
Current and past students bring their
experiences to the course and come from
national and global companies around the
world, including BBC, BT, Marval Prudential,
Northgate Managed Services, European Central
Bank (ECB) UN World Food Programme, NHS,
Serco, HP, IBM International, National Audit
Office (NAO), Universities of Nottingham
and Northampton, as well as regional
councils and police forces. We aim to tailor
assignments around work based experiences
where possible, to add value and enhance the
students experience. It is the perfect course
for IT students wishing to move into IT Service
Management , which offers expanding job
opportunities. Course tutors are ITIL® and
Prince2® trained. Another first is that the
university has aligned its learning outcomes
to SFIA so as to ensure students have the
building blocks to support Continual Personal
Development as well as enhance their skill set.

27. MBA TOP UP PROGRAMME
From Edexcel, ILM, CMI, NCC, ABE
Management
CourseAims
Strategic management and change are
essential areas of expertise for many people
seeking high level careers in the professions,
commerce or academia. This course will
provide students with a theoretical background
and applied knowledge at Masters level.
It is designed to enhance intellectual and
transferable skills, including research, analysis
and appraisal. On completion, postgraduate
students will be conversant with theoretical
issues in Management, and be able to apply
theory and practice to real issues faced in day-
to-day operations.
Course Content
As a part-time course students take the
module in Managing Strategic Change.
Supervision for the dissertation is provided in
Northampton (or at a distance if you prefer).
For those taking the Top up programme
delivered by distance learning individual
students need to be prepared to study
independently using CD ROM’s and or web
based material with the support of a tutor
utilising phone and e-mail. Supervision of the
dissertation is therefore available at a distance
or in person for those within travelling distance
of Northampton. Fully qualified managers with
a Level 7 qualification and three years work
experience need to complete one module on
Managing Strategic Change plus Research
Methods and dissertation. Some individuals
may need to take extra modules depending on
their previous qualifications.
Managing Strategic Change
Particular regard within this module will be
upon abilities and skills to conceptualise the
strategic development of organisations – to
recognise key strategic issues and to enhance
abilities to manage strategic change. Strategic
thinking is about processes of strategic
management and change, and the ability
to take holistic and long term views of the
organisation in the context of its environment
is an important attribute of a senior manager.
The strategies adopted must have regard for
the internal capabilities, power structures
and culture of the organisation as well as
the external opportunities and uncertainties
exposed by environmental analysis.
Dissertation
Students are required to identify a topic of their
choosing, with guidance from the subject tutor,
of sufficient breadth and depth to undertake
research and produce a dissertation of
approximately 15,000 words. Research may
be based within your own organisation or be
on more generic issues within your subject
area.
Assessment
Coursework and dissertations.
Entry Requirements
Applicants are welcome from those with Level
7 professional qualifications from Edexcel,
ILM, CMI, NCC ABE. The amount of credit
given as an exception depends on the Level 7
qualification and options taken.
1 year part time or distance learning

Incorporating Postgraduate Diploma and Postgraduate Certificate
Management
Introduction
The award is aimed at those already in
work, who are interested in their Continuous
Professional Development (CPD). A wide range
of people find themselves requiring formal
qualifications in order to progress their career.
Unfortunately CPD may become fragmented
with qualifications, part qualifications, short
courses, and internal training. This flexible
qualification is designed to fit with the
qualifications and CPD provided by the main
UK providers and professional bodies.
Students completing the programme can
expect to have a career boost whether in the
public services or commercial organisations.
It is the aim of this course that graduates
will eventually become senior managers
in their organisation. The course provides
opportunities for managers to develop higher
specialist and advanced level knowledge, skills
and leadership capacities. The course equips
students with the knowledge and skills for
advancement in leadership and management
and it is expected that the programme will
considerably enhance the career pathways for
these students.

learning and learners would normally take 30
credits per semester (60 credits per year)
Year 1 = Postgraduate Certificate of 60
credits

postgraduate (level 7) Diplomas from such
bodies as the ILM, CMI, Edexcel, ABE, or NCC
for example. Such applicants will normally
receive at least 60 credits in exemptions from
the Certificate stage and progress directly to
the Diploma stage. The main themes within

organisation strategy and functional
operations.

Stage 1 will comprise four units. The aim is to
provide the knowledge, skills and know-how for
senior marketing managers, giving them an
insight into defining the organisation’s strategic
focus, and developing marketing strategies and
the corporate communications plan.

thinking and encourage you to consider how
businesses need to respond to emerging themes
from a marketing perspective. As well as
establishing academic robustness from the onset,
the unit will give students an insight into the
latest issues that are impacting upon
marketing in both today’s and tomorrow’s
dynamic and changeable business environment.
A unique feature of this unit is that the emerging
themes covered will be updated annually.
Analysis and Decision (A&D)
This unit prepares students to undertake a
strategic audit of the organisation in order
to assess its ability to deliver its business and
marketing strategy, and to make strategic choices

marketing communications in managing the
organisation’s reputation, including the corporate
brand and corporate positioning. This unit has
a significant amount of new content, which
moves CIM forward in its coverage of marketing
communications, making it more dynamic,

management, and at managing the dimensions
of an organisation’s reputation.

the student will have gained60 credits and is
awarded the Professional Postgraduate Diploma
in Marketing and MCIM status.
Stage 2, Leading Marketing, is a very substantial

whether the project successfully achieved the
intended outcomes. It will also enable students

34. Marketing
CourseAims
The degree is designed to enhance your
existing professional qualification such as
the CIM Postgraduate Professional Diploma
through exposure to strategic marketing, and
management issues. Students will be expected
to complete a dissertation that can be related
to issues in the work place or more generally
on topics that are currently topical in the
finance research domain. The management
of change is an essential areas of expertise
for many people seeking high level careers
in the professions, commerce or academia.
This course will provide students with a
theoretical background and applied knowledge
at Masters level. It is designed to enhance
intellectual and transferable skills, including
presentation, research, analysis and appraisal.
On completion, postgraduate students will
be conversant with theoretical issues in
Management and Marketing, and be able to
apply theory and practice to real issues faced in
day-to-day operations.
Course Content
All students take modules in Managing Strategic
Change and a dissertation (incorporating a
research methods programme). Delivery is
either on campus or by distance learning. For
those taking the Top up programme delivered
by distance learning individual students need
to be prepared to study independently using
CD ROM’s and/or web based material with the
support of a tutor utilising phone and e-mail.
Supervision of the dissertation is therefore
available at a distance or in person for those
within travelling distance of Northampton.
Managing Strategic Change
Particular regard within this module will be upon
abilities and skills to conceptualise the strategic
development of organisations – to recognise
key strategic issues and to enhance abilities to
manage strategic change. Strategic thinking is
about processes of strategic management and
change, and the ability to take holistic and long
term views of the organisation in the context
of its environment is an important attribute
of a senior manager. The strategies adopted
must have regard for the internal capabilities,
power structures and culture of the organisation
as well as the external opportunities and
uncertainties exposed by environmental
analysis.
Dissertation
An important feature of a Master’s programme
is the development of a student’s ability to
work independently. The dissertation module
therefore starts with the introduction to research
methods and provides knowledge of and insight
into the main research tools available.
The subject area for the dissertation will be
in the area of marketing and can be directly
related to work or on a more theoretical topic of
your choosing. Students are required to identify
a topic of their choosing, with guidance from the
subject tutor, of sufficient breadth and depth to
undertake research and produce a dissertation
of approximately 15,000 words.
Assessment
Coursework and dissertations.
Entry Requirements

Whether you are a small, medium or large organisation, we have
students available who are keen to work hard, contribute to their
employer, develop new skills and knowledge and bring fresh

Your organisation benefits by selecting from a source of, bright
and enthusiastic students who can be employed on a fixed term
contract. There are three main types of placement from which
your organisation may benefit.
Undergraduate SandwichYear – 12 months full
time placement
All our single honours degree programmes now offer students
the opportunity to undertake a one year period of work-based
learning during the third year of their studies. These students join
a wide variety of organisations from large blue chip companies
to SMEs. They find employment in the public, private and
voluntary sectors, mainly in the UK but some students do work
internationally. As full time employees they are available for work
from July at the end of their second year of study through to the
September of the following year when they rejoin their full time
studies and complete the fourth and final year of their degree.
Organisations currently employing these students include a
wide range of sectors and industries. Local companies such as
Enterprise Rent-a-Car, Cummins, Avon Cosmetics, Whitworths
and Milton Keynes Council have employed students in a variety
of roles as have organisations further a field such as IBM, Hotel
Chocolát, Microsoft, Network Rail, The National Trust and
Swarovski.
Undergraduate PartTime Employment
First degree courses now offer the option of a formal ‘work-based
learning’ module. Many students work part time to help pay for
their studies. Now they are able to learn from such experiences
by studying in the work-place and completing assessed projects,
with the employer’s permission. The University also helps match
employers seeking part time staff to students seeking work and
has a “Job Shop” to support this activity. Employers who wish
to recruit students as part time workers should contact the
