Transforming IT IntoInnovating Together Tom Soderstrom IT Chief Technology Officer NASA, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Caltech February2011 “One must learn by doing the thing; for though you think you know it, you have no certainty until you try.” - Sophocles
Agenda Does IT matter today? Tomorrow? What are the IT industry trends and how can you benefit? How will IT be redefined and what can you do? How can these examples of Innovating Together help your organization? Yes, IT is all about you! “Those who have knowledge, don’t predict. Those who predictdon’t have knowledge.”- Lao Tzu, 6th century B.C. 2
JPL is part of both NASA and Caltech 3 ,[object Object]
NASA’s lead center for robotic exploration of the solar system. Have 19 spacecraft and 9 instruments across the solar system and beyond
$1.7B contract per year, ~ 5,000 employees; 177 acre facility located in Pasadena, CA, with 670K sq.ft of office space and 900K sq.ft. of labs
Manages worldwide Deep Space Network
3 Locations - Goldstone CA, Madrid Spain, Canberra Australia
Spacecraft Command & Control - Recording scientific data
50+ years experience in spacecraft design, production, operation
JPL spacecraft have visited all planets in our solar system except Pluto!,[object Object]

Remember when… 6 This meant portable? This meant mobile? This meant connected? “640K ought to be enough for anybody” - Bill Gates, 1981 “The aeroplane is scientifically impossible.”- Royal Society president William Thomson, 1897-9 3 years ago we realized issues with stove piped IT, duplicate IT, IT that “didn’t matter”, obsolete IT, and IT that we had to support alone. What should we do?
7 Focusing on IT trends in 2008 paid dividends It gave NASA/JPL employees influence over and early access to relevant technology that improved their productivity and satisfaction A few examples: IT customers gained early advantage of Consumer Electronics via the Technology Petting Zoo, prototypes, and working groups New smart phones with mission focus Use of Remote Face to Face systems (HD video conferencing) Early knowledge and use of cloud computing Help to steer the IT ship via ITLabs, IT working groups, IT boards Outreach and collaboration in virtual NASA Centers such as “Explorer Island” and missions in virtual worlds Social Networking – Twitter, Facebook, etc. Ability to upload/find/view videos via JPLTube Enhanced partnering via the Superpartners program So, it was worth doing it again…
How did we arrive at the new IT Trends? We did a lot of proactive research We talked with many CTOs, engineers, futurists, and technology and business leaders. Some example include: Thinkers: Gartner, MIT, Forrester, Ziff-Davis, Leading Edge Forum, Burton Group, magazines, books, conferences Partners and leaders: Lockheed-Martin, CSC, NASA, FFRDCs, Deloitte, A.T. Kerney, BAH Startups: Large and small and very small See backup slides for their detailed predictions So, what did we find?...
JPL IT Trends 2011 and Beyond 9 Mega trend: Work with anyone from anywhere with any data using any device 2011 and beyond Top IT Trends affecting JPL 1. Extreme Collaboration Made Simple 2. The Pervasive Cloud 3. Eco Friendliest 4. Refocused Cyber Security 5. Consumer Driven IT 6. More Resources (removed) 6. You’ve got apps 7. Immersive Visualization and Interaction 8. Big Data 9. Human Behavior 2008 Top IT Trends affecting JPL 1. Extreme Collaboration 2. Cloud Computing 3. Go Green 4. Cyber Security 5. Consumerization of IT 6. More Resources 7. How will the evolving computing help us at work? In our daily life/projects? In our social life? On the go?
How much privacy will you give up for convenience?
SmartPhones + SmartTVs+ SmartCars SmartPeople? ,[object Object]
We already talk differentlyAre you on linked in? When did you last google yourself? Is your mom your friend? Are you following me? How will our children speak? Will they communicate better? 11
Trend 1. Extreme Collaboration Made Simple ,[object Object]
Social Networking
From anywhere with anyone
Real-time Content Creation
Face to Face(s)
Cloud based
Super Partners
Physical / Virtual Worlds12 “Everything that can be invented has been invented” - Charles Duell, Commissioner, US Office of Patents, 1899
Early IT Examples: Knowledge Sharing 13 ITLabs Second Life  First Life
Trend 2. The Pervasive Cloud 14  Cloud is THE enabler… if we continue to Keep it Real
IT Example: Use Cloud for Citizen Science http://BeaMartian.jpl.nasa.gov Reaches MS Cloud developers / citizen scientists of all ages
JPL IT Cloud Example: Amazon HPC usage for Athlete
What’s next for Clouds and Clouds at JPL? We learned from cloud trials with Amazon, Google, Microsoft, CSC/Terremark, LM, etc and will expand them. Great ROI. We transition from understanding the Cloud to working in the Cloud to partnering in specialized Clouds The Cloud enables everything … if we let it (e.g. PC 3.0) Specialized Clouds become the Operating System JPL will advance the Cloud Readiness Levels (CRL) and Cloud Oriented Architecture (COA) Spin the Wheel of Security and evaluate more Use Cases Automate the Cloud Application Suitability Model (CASM) Continue to keep it real and benefit from employees’ and partners’ ingenious usage of Clouds Take full advantage of the Pervasive Cloud
18 Use the Cloud for Redundancy
Trend 3. The Eco Friendliest Multicore ,[object Object]
Changes how we select and measure technology including purchases, source selection, compliance, stature in the community with IT leadership ,[object Object]

  • 1. Transforming IT IntoInnovating Together Tom Soderstrom IT Chief Technology Officer NASA, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Caltech February2011 “One must learn by doing the thing; for though you think you know it, you have no certainty until you try.” - Sophocles

  • 13. 7 Focusing on IT trends in 2008 paid dividends It gave NASA/JPL employees influence over and early access to relevant technology that improved their productivity and satisfaction A few examples: IT customers gained early advantage of Consumer Electronics via the Technology Petting Zoo, prototypes, and working groups New smart phones with mission focus Use of Remote Face to Face systems (HD video conferencing) Early knowledge and use of cloud computing Help to steer the IT ship via ITLabs, IT working groups, IT boards Outreach and collaboration in virtual NASA Centers such as “Explorer Island” and missions in virtual worlds Social Networking – Twitter, Facebook, etc. Ability to upload/find/view videos via JPLTube Enhanced partnering via the Superpartners program So, it was worth doing it again…

Editor's Notes

  1. Synopsis: This paper will describe an innovation methodology (which could be implemented by any organization) of transforming IT from "Information Technology" into "Innovating Together". It'll describe JPL's journey so far, the specific steps taken, and the next steps that are planned. There will also be time for discussion with the audience.Give visionary story of how we will work in the future: To work with anyone from anywhere on any data using any device
  2. Some other predictions:By the year 2019, thanks to information technology (IT), humans will have largely overcome the limits of our humanity. We will have found cures for the major diseases that kill 95 percent of us in the developed world. By 2029, we will become godlike—tiny computer chips embedded into our bodies will stop disease and reverse aging, ever expanding our lifespans.Such are the prognostications of the current pied piper of the digital utopia crowd (- Ray Kurzweil)Ken Olson, founder and chairman of Digital Equipment Corp., said in 1977, “There is no reason anyone would want a computer in their home.”Thomas Watson, president and CEO of IBM, in 1943 said, “I think there is a world market for maybe five computers.H. M. Warner, co-founder and president of Warner Brothers, said in 1927, “Who the hell wants to hear actors talk?”.According to an 1876 internal Western Union memo, “This ‘telephone’ has too many shortcomings to be seriously considered as a means of communication. The device is inherently of no value to us.”
  3. Federated Security
  4. “Mark Rober, Josh St. Vaughn and Daren Rhoades have created CogEpedia. It’s an excellent example of innovation that builds on JPLWiki and JPLTube and other new capabilities where the paint is not even dry yet. CogEpedia is Wikipedia-style, online resource customized for and written by JPL Engineers. It's a place to document concise explanations for common JPL engineering subjects of interest. Contact Mark Rober for any additional information about CogEPedia."Knowledge is experience; everything else is information.” Albert EinsteinCould Frontliners benefit from something similar?” -----CogEpedia is Wikipedia-style, online resource customized for and written by JPL Engineers. It's a place to document concise explanations for common JPL engineering subjects of interest such as: bearings, preload, fatigue, commonly used metals, etc. from a JPL point of view. Articles also may include links to standards, useful websites, book references and good JPL points of contact if further clarification is needed. It is NOT a replacement for Docushare, PDMS or JPLRules, it will link to documents that exist in official repositories after providing some context for the content first. If you want to see examples of a few good articles see: https://jplwiki.jpl.nasa.gov:8443/display/CEP/Featured+articlesHere is an example of JPLTube integration (now if we could just get rid of that pesky log-in pop-up ;) https://jplwiki.jpl.nasa.gov:8443/display/CEP/Layman%27s+guide
  5. 2. Cloud – UpdatedThe Internet becomes the data centerOperationalizing the CloudCASM  Cloud Readiness LevelsWorking in ???Collaboration - Crowd Sourcing, SaaS, …Supercomputing in your desktop (e.g. $8K machine with 1,000 cores). GPU Computing” (GPGPU), Cuda, and OpenCL (Open Computing Language)Cloud computing has taken the business world by storm. Two-thirds of Baseline survey respondents plan to expand the use of public clouds, which reside on the Internet, provide access to shared computing resources and are operated by third-party providers. Sixty-four percent said they’re interested in private clouds, which, according to the National Institute of Standards and Technology, are “owned or leased by a single organization and operated solely for that organization.Tech research firm IDC expects spending on IT cloud services to grow almost threefold, reaching $42 billion by 2012. “We’re finally seeing a level of standardization that makes cloud computing entirely viable,” says Mark Lobel, a principal at PricewaterhouseCoopers Advisory Services.By 2020 most people will access software and information online and not from their local PC or company data center. They won’t be able to distinguish whether they are working within or outside of their local devices.(From Pew Research Center survey of 895 internet experts and technology executives.)
  6. ATHLETE – traversed 60 KM at the recent D-RATs field testWe used AWS cluster compute nodes to process images as large as 3.2 Gigapixels of the terrain to help provide situational awareness to the operators. Cluster compute details:Single tenant – 10Gb interconnect – fast machines suitable for many of the HPC computing needs at JPL
  7. 3. Eco Friendly –-> (Updated)Is becoming a cornerstone. Used to be called Green IT. Is part of all trends.CloudVirtualizationUbiquitous ComputingBig Data
  8. Educate everyone on the best practices Educate developers on web security Enterprise applications begin to discover and use services on-demand and outside the work group Renewed focus on applications and intelligent agents that are built to be changed, use the Web, can be mashed up, and degrades gracefully Pay for privacy
  9. There are many ways to slices this, but these are the Consumer trends we observed.Visualization (3D everything, multitouch, etc), eReaders, even greener devices, mobile apps, media convergence, cloud, ultralight netbooks, gaming, wireless mediaSkype was embedded in many pieces of hardwareLast year, Cloud was for storage. It’s now embedded in everything and the devices are using it. E.g. Synch.
  10. 6. You’ve got apps – Used to be called Develop DifferentlyWe will raise the focus to a higher level from Develop Differently and incorporate other development efforts (e.g. from Cloud, Mobile, Big Data, Cyber Security, etc).DLNA for media-related devices (cameras, computers, TVs, etc, in the home or conference room)WiFi Direct for … (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wi-Fi_Direct) - Wi-Fi Direct, formerly known as Wi-Fi Peer-to-Peer, is a set of software protocols that allow Wi-Fi devices to talk to each other without prior setup or the need for wireless access points (hot spots). Wi-Fi Direct allows the construction of ad-hoc networks between computers, or more commonly, computers and peripherals like printers.Apps vs Programs – Show a Swiss army knife vs. the specialized more powerful tool. Apple showed the way. This is the idea that the we will be going towards easy to find, easy to use, simple apps with specific functionality, that will be selected by the user community. The old environment is a Swiss army knife. The new environment consists of specialized expert tools. It’s called “YOU” because it’s recognizing the importance of the end user. Might be the next step of the IT Consumerization. It’s called “GOT APPS” because it’s recognizing the importance of small, specialized appsSpecialized apps - Instead of large monolithic swiss-army app, end users select small razor sharp apps that do only what they need (e.g. Doodle for voting, twitter for posting updates, etc.). They are easy to find, use, and discard. It’s the iPhone apps distribution and usage mentality in Enterprise IT. It allows for rapid continuous progress a la Google instead of our yearly updates.Fostering users’ ingenuity – Let users recommend and pick the apps that hold the largest value. This includes periodic contests (e.g. the iPad contest). It will change the role of the help desk to a “how do I get started” and a switchboard of user experts on a wiki-based support system. It will also change how we select apps (e.g. ITLabs).Show the mobile apps development here and some examples.Web Standards (including HTML5), Mobile, Cloud, NUIEnterprise mashups are real-time, secure applications that are built rapidly using data pulled from public or internal sources and can be easily shared. An enterprise mashup creates new insights and understanding by rapidly combining previously unconnected information in new ways. JackBe is a leader.
