2. Back at home, Teresa was left with
nothing to do but think about what
they had done. In the harsh light of
day, she was full of remorse. It had
been inappropriate given their
working relationship, indiscreet… a
bad idea.
3. But looking at the flowers he
had given her on the table,
she knew she wouldn’t be
able to stay away. And if he
wanted to bring up the night
before, make the change in
status permanent – she
wouldn’t be able to say no.
4. But for some reason,
he didn’t say
anything. She
couldn’t work out if
he was shy and
embarrassed, or
ashamed. So she
didn’t bring it up
either.
5. So she pulled back a bit, stopped going with him
when he sold his fruit and veg. Warren wasn’t sure
how to tackle the problem. He really liked her, but
wasn’t sure if he ought to pursue her. He was older,
with a lot of baggage. How could he hope for
anything more?
6. Teresa decided to stay in her job, and
stay close to Warren. Perhaps, in time,
what had happened between them
might happen again.
7. But not any time soon. Teresa had gone down with some illness, a tummy bug or a
mild case of the flu. Hard to say. It wasn’t bad enough to bother a doctor thankfully.
She just took some over the counter medicine and went to work.
9. Back at her place,
Teresa did a quick
home test and
discovered she was
pregnant. Apparently
she and Warren had
not taken any
precautions that
fateful night.
She was happy to be
having a baby, but
riddled with guilt.
Warren wasn’t
interested, so she
wouldn’t share the
burden with him.
10. All Warren knew was that
the day after sending her
home sick, she called to
hand in her notice. She
wouldn’t be back.
11. James was upset at the
absence of his mother
figure, and Warren was
confused and hurt at her
speedy decision. It didn’t
make sense, but he
couldn’t see how to fix it.
They would just have to
get on without her.
12. It was a shame… She missed James ageing
up by a couple of days. The sparkles began
and he aged up into a child.
13. Both of them got
on with their
lives. Warren was
looking after and
getting to know
his son. Teresa
meanwhile was
looking after
herself, living off
her savings and
trying not to let
her heart break
of loneliness.
14. Both of them felt unable to contact the
other. It was a real shame that neither
or them could overcome their
awkwardness and make the first move.
15. James all but forgot his babysitter. It’s hard
to say how many memories we carry with
us from toddler to child. He vaguely
remembered a woman he thought of
fondly. She had brown hair. But he had
moved on.
17. Warren was aware that his
son was a little socially
awkward, but wasn’t sure
what to do about it. He
seemed happy enough.
James wanted to make his
dad proud, but didn’t feel
confident enough to make
friends. He had friendly
acquaintances in class. It
would have to do.
18. Warren had a suspicion
his sons shyness was a
result of losing not one,
but two maternal figures
in his young life. All he
could do was try and be
worth two parents for his
little boy.
19. Teresa was about ready to
pop, and decided to have her
baby at home. Less questions
would be asked. She could put
Warren on the birth certificate
and file it later without
witnesses.
20. She gave birth to a little girl. She
was perfect, with a few strands
of hair the colour of Warrens.
Teresa named her Megan.
21. She was overwhelmed for her feelings for the little bundle of baby. She loved
her and was full of joy, but she couldn’t shake the nagging voice in the back of
her head. Her savings wouldn’t last forever. She needed a new job, but who
would look after Megan while she worked?
22. All she can do for now is live as
frugally as she can, and buy the
cheapest baby gear possible.
Once Megan was a toddler she
could put her in day care, and
go out to work.
But for now… she was stuck.
23. Out walking, Jen Martinez had seen Teresa
out with her baby girl.
She struggles with what she had learnt,
should she tell Warren about Teresa’s
baby? Was it even his? And what if he
knows already, but doesn’t care? She could
be sticking her nose in where it didn’t
belong. She didn’t want to lose one of her
only friends over this.
24. She decides to send Warren an
anonymous email, written from
an address she created for the
occasion. Untraceable, she would
be without blame if it all went
south.
25. Warren tended to check his
emails every day, so it wasn’t
long before he saw Jen’s
message. He thought it might
be a hoax at first, but there
were too many details that
rang true.
26. Oblivious to the
fact it was her
who sent the
email, he called
Jen over to watch
James while he
went to confront
his ex-
housekeeper.
27. Teresa was shocked to
see him, and kept him
talking outside rather
than let him in. It soon
became clear however,
that he already knew her
secret.
28. So she let him in, and Warren met Megan for the
first time. Teresa was deeply uncomfortable, she
felt guilty for keeping them apart for starters. But
she was also on tenterhooks, waiting to see how
he would react once the shock had worn off.
29. All Warren did was
mumble some apologies,
and tell her he’d be in
touch very soon. Teresa
supposed the shock and
emotions had gotten a
bit much.
She sat and wondered
how little James was
now. She had missed him
terribly. He would
probably be a child by
now.
