The Broad River came from the mountains of
North Carolina and flows south east
through the foothills and Piedmont before
entering South Carolina.
 Lake Lure is a big part of the Broad River
    Basin.
 It is 1514 square miles.
 8 counties are using the basin,
 Gilkey
 Spindale
 Tryon
 Saluda
 Chimney Rock Village
 Columbus
 Shelby
 Rutherfordton
 Total miles of streams and rivers 1,513
Main Rivers and Smaller
              Tributaries

 Major tributaries include the Green, First
Broad, Second Broad and North Pacolet rivers.
There are also four major man-made lakes,
including the popular tourist destination Lake
Lure, which was built in 1926 to create
electricity for the people that lived in that area.
Plants and Animals
 The Green Salamander, a endangered species
for the state, Mole Salamander, Blue Ridge
    Gray-cheeked Salamander, and South
    Mountain Gray-cheeked Salamander are
among the basin’s rare animals. The Broad
River Stream Crayfish and Broad River Spiny
Cray fish occur only in this basin and in 2006
the Carolina Foothills Crayfish was described
as a new kind and is endemic to the upper
    Broad surrounding basins. Excessive sediments
in rivers pose a threat to these crayfish and
    other aquatic species.
Other Facts on the Basin

    salamanders
 Has many endangered species of salamander
    in area.
