Eutrophication is a process where chemical nutrients in a body of water increase due to human activities such as agriculture and industry. This causes an algal bloom which reduces water quality and oxygen levels. As algae die off, decomposing bacteria consume oxygen, threatening aquatic life. Prevention efforts include riparian buffer zones, regulating fertilizer use, and cleanups to reduce nutrient pollution entering waterways.
